Very happy to see a Brown Creeper creeping around an oak just outside my
window. They always make me smile.

I have a pair of White-breasted Nuthatches building a nest in the fascia of our
house, the same place as the last two years. In addition, a pair built a nest
three years ago in a tree in the same general area. The female in the previous
years had a very dark gray cap. It was so dark that it
Last night, around 7:30 p.m. I watched a female White-breasted Nuthatch take
chunks of oak bark into a hole in our home's fascia. This will be the 3rd year
of nesting there. Today she is still taking in some oak bark, but is also going
to our cedar tree and pulling off thin, bark strips. Then
I had a surprising new yard bird today: a Lark Sparrow. I was watching the
Song and Field Sparrows trying to figure out if/where they were nesting. The
area was clear-cut under power lines in early spring last year (2011).
Everyone in the neighborhood was dismayed because they had never
Greetings all,
On Tuesday I had a female Am. Goldfinch gathering fur and taking it away in the
same direction... repeatedly. I have had goldfinches gather fur or fibers this
early in the season before but, almost immediately, she has always opened her
beak and released it to the wind. This

At about 1:30 today I was able to watch a Broad-winged Hawk dine on a snake.
It was at the gas station on the northwest corner of Cahill and 80th St in
Inver Grove Hts. (Perhaps a migrant refueling for the next leg of its
journey?)
It ate in one of the small trees just to the west of the gas
I'm trying to think back to exactly when I was on McAndrews (maybe two weeks
ago) and a Broad-wing flew over me from north to south (I think east of Pilot
Knob--toward the Shannon Park neighborhood). So, there is a Broad-wing in the
area.

Greetings all,
I will be visiting Vancouver in early August and was wondering if anyone had
helpful hints about places to bird? I will visit the city of Vancouver and
surrounding areas, but WILL NOT be visiting Vancouver Island on this trip.
Any ideas via back channel would be great.
Thanks
Made the rounds in the yard today. Nesting season is well underway.
Eastern Bluebird: Day 1 of incubating 5 eggs.
Blue Jay: Sitting on a nest that she/they started building on 4/12/09.
Eastern Phoebe: After failing to complete a nest north of our property, she
returned here and refurbished
Yesterday, out of all the White-throated Sparrows, and the couple Field and
Chipping Sparrows, I espied a lovely Vesper Sparrow bathing in our ground
water. It even gave my son good looks at its pretty little red epaulet, white
eye-ring, and white outer tail feathers as it flew. Lovely looks.
In trying to update my bird list, I've discovered that there is now a
Black-crested Titmouse. Is it the same bird that used to be simply a
version/morph of the Tufted Titmouse? I'd be pretty happy if that was the
case! It would put me at 3 short of 500 life birds... unless as I continue
There were 8 Gray Partridges digging in the snow on the NW corner of Joan Ave
and 180th St in Dakota Co. this evening. I saw them at about 5:50 and they
were still there when I left at about 6:10. They were about 10 feet or so
south of the deciduous, brushy windrow that runs at an angle sw to
Had a good morning birding at the corner of Merrill St and Co Rd C2 this
morning in Roseville.
The Varied Thrush was in the crabapple trees on the NW corner at 9:00. It
returned at 9:40 and presented good views front and back. It returned at

I am so lucky. The Tufted Titmouse that came very briefly on Thursday, came
back yesterday and spent hours gathering safflower seeds, and has been back
again intermittently today. Maybe it felt that it had gathered enough
yesterday so that it could take it a bit easier today. I just don't
I've been waiting and watching finally a Tufted Titmouse showed up in my
back yard today.
I was on the phone with my mom telling her I hadn't put out birdfeed for a
while, so I better get to it on this nice sunny day. Then I stood up and
watched the yard and commented, I'm not sure why
Sounds like the juvenile Eastern Towhee that I've got hanging out in my yard
now. It has also discovered the goodies and easy pickings under our sunflower
feeder

Looked out the window this morning and saw Mr. Towhee at our feeder. The Brown
Thrasher was here singing on Sunday; they'll join together and make a great
cacophony of sound. Can't wait.

Yesterday mid-morning I saw a strange raptor across the Mississippi River from
the trail at Hardman and Grand Aves. in South St. Paul. It was perched in a
fairly small tree (compared to the larger tree on the right of it--from my
perpspective) across the river almost straight ahead as you
Greetings Birders,
I will be in the Denver and the Rocky Mountain National Park area near
the end of June and was wondering if anyone could recommend good
birding guide books? I see I have choices of about 10 or more and,
based on the descriptions given for them, I'm not sure which would be
Greetings all,
Yesterday I made a fairly quick stop to look for the Snowy Owl, and had printed
out all the e-mails with directions so that I'd have a clue. Of course, I
didn't even understand the thing about the tunnels, but figured I'd get it once
I saw it... I did (they are part of Cargo Rd).
