Hello,
Today Howard Towle, Paul Budde and I observed 45 Red Crossbills of two
different call types on the west side of the Manston Marsh WMA in Wilkin
County. We also saw continuing Red Crossbills at the Pine Ridge County
Park in Grant Co., and at Wildwood Cemetery north of Wheaton, Traverse
Birded western Minnesota (Lac qui Parle, Yellow Medicine, and Lincoln counties)
on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, primarily for the Breeding Bird Atlas. We
found 107 species. Notible finds and notes:
Waterfowl: Besides Canada Geese, very few broods were found. It seems that

Over Memorial Day weekend we went to western Minnesota to bird and survey for
the Breeding Bird Atlas. We found 120 species in Lac qui Parle, Yellow
Medicine, and Lincoln counties. Some of the better finds:
Say's Phoebe: Last year's breeding Say's Phoebe returned this year to the 140th
This last weekend we braved torrential storms to bird Yellow Medicine and Lac
qui Parle counties. Good birds included:
Nesting Loggerhead Shrikes
Whip-poor-will at the Prairie Marsh farm in Lac qui Parle
Two covies of Gray (Hungarian) Partridge with young
Several Red-head Woodpeckers
Lark
On Saturday I filled my wife's car (it holds more passangers) with birders and
hit road for western Minnesota. With a few stops on the way we headed to the
Larson's Prairie Marsh Farm in western Lac qui Parle County. On Sunday we
headed south and finished the day surveying a couple of blocks
Birded Lac qui Parle and Yellow Medicine counties in western Minnesota and
found about 90 species including:
Immature Ferruginous Hawk that has been hanging around south of Prairie Marsh
farm for the last month. This was the first time I had actually found one this
side of the border with SD.
