Hi All--
About a quarter of the large flock of Canada Geese that hang out on the
Cannon River in the city of Northfield (Rice Co.) appear to be Cackling
Geese. I have posted photos and ID tips on my blog.

We saw a Townsend Solitaire at Lake Vadnais this morning. The bird was in the
trees along the Vadnais side of the road just before the long line of junipers
on the left side of the road past the end of the smaller west lake.
There were still the large numbers of ring-necks but we saw no
Ron Erpelding called and said he had refound the White-winged Scoter on
Green Prairie Fish Lake, and the Summer Tanager on the north side of
Fishtrap Lake. The Summer Tanager was back where it was originally found at
house number 2441, but there are also crab apple trees next door at 2393, so

I spent a good part of the day looking for ducks and geese in various water
bodies around the metro area. Starting in my backyard at Lake Como, I found
4 Cackling Geese among a few hundred Canada Geese, plus a Gadwall, and several
Shovelers. Other sites and birds included:
Lake Vadnais -
This morning Maureen and I hiked on the part of Elm Creek Park Reserve's
Lake Trail that is east and northeast of Mud Lake. Maureen spotted our
first NORTHERN SHRIKE of the season perched a short distance north of
the wooden footbridge that is just north of the swimming area. Later I
noticed
Folks -
I found two Snow Geese, one dark, one light, in the Grand Marais Harbor
during the 12-1pm time. They were also eating up at the Artist's Point
parking lot, and working back and forth from the water.

We found our first No. Shrike of the fall this AM in the City of Columbus, just
west of Gander Mountain on the road leading to the race track. Usually we have
our first shrike in late October so this is a late early date for us.

Minnesota side.
- Thayer's Gull ( 2nd cycle ) flying over into Minnesota
Got a call from Peder who got a second hand report of a male Barrow's Goldeneye
behind Beacon Point Resort
This morning while birding the Superir Entry from the Wisconsin Point
lighthouse
a nice group of gulls assembled on the pier next to me including an adult
California Gull, an adult Thayer's Gull, an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, a
first-cycle Great Black-backed Gull, 149 Ring-billed Gulls,
