Re: [Mpls] Park Board Annual Meeting, You're not invited

2003-12-31 Thread David Shove
I think Annie has a good point.

If the meeting notices are run by the government, the forces that want to
sneak stuff thru will subvert it. I understand the Legislature has a good
data base, that could be easily accessible to the public, allowing us to
see at a glance how our legislators vote. I also understand that it is
not public, and may never be so - not if the legislators have their way.
The less we know, the better they like it. All we need to know is, where
to vote, and where to mark the ballot - after that, we're expendable. Of
course there are honorable exceptions - but not enough to change the Keep
'em ignorant policy.

My Progressive Calendar is based on the premise that neither government
nor major media will publish many of the contents. They don't. Not when
it's special interests vs the public.

So both pretty much have to be done privately. The city meeting notice
probably by one or two people, for free. People who are insulated from
being fired for political activity.

So, is there anyone who wants to take on the job? (I have enuf to do).

I think what might be useful is a City Events Calendar - that would include
meetings similar to what is offered at the University of Minnesota.

As far as a state law like this - without additional funding (and higher
taxes), this will become another unfunded mandate for local governments.

Will a law like this fix the problem Scott Vreeland is discussing? Not if
meetings can be arbitrarily changed - in the way he is alleging the Park
 Board Meeting is.

 Scott Vreeland:

I have heard rumblings about Bob Fine trying to move the meeting to an
earlier time so that fewer people who work during the day could attend.
I hope this is not true.

I suggest a public Renaming Ceremony, to

 BOB NOTFINE

He's notfine with me, and I hope he's notfine with you.

Closing down meetings is proof of bad intent. Let's see what happens.

The issue of online meeting notices has come in the E-Democracy
Legislative Study Group in past years. Lately in some of my speeches on
e-democracy I've been talking about the rule of law and how what is
desirable with the net and democracy/government may need to beocme the
law.

So, who would like to help me draft up a bill that amends Minnesota
public meeting laws to require that all public meetings must also be
posted online (in addition to a bulletin board in the government office
or newspaper (sometimes))? Minneapolis could take the lead now by
