I don't know, I would need the input file to try this out. Perhaps
setting \lefthyphenmin to a large value would work, \setuptolerance
is probably overruled by the implied \framed command.

a fairly large bibliographical list which is generated from an even
larger bibtex database. Now, I want to quote some of the items from
this list on my slides, but I want to retain the original numbering
for the whole list or

you had with short item keys when they are not generated by
\setupbibtex[sort=short], but at least you can have a normal
list of referenced items now.

The elegant way would have been being able to define separate

There are two big jobs to be done, one of which is optional:
1) add translations to mult-com.tex
