I can't seem to be able to grasp the concept of pretty printers.
All the sample codes I found on the net/wiki/mailing list don't compile,
complaining that \installprettytype is an unknown command...?!

The examples I provided (from the wiki, now abbreviated, with numbering)
have correct line breaks but the second line does not get a number.

For mkii you need the texnansi encoding for the fonts, mkiv has no problems

but haven’t told which engine you use neither did you provide a full
