[NTG-context] Transliterator module, 2nd revision
Hi again, the transliteration module has been reworked following sunday's discussion on the list. The table groups now come in separate files and are loaded / created only on demand. The module now provides a \[start|stop]transliterate environment, credits for it go to Wolfgang. The most valuable suggestion came from Thomas: the former substitution functions that were using string.gsub() have been entirely replaced by LPeg, which proves to be surprisingly fast. (Under some circumstances, it is faster than not transliterating at all.) I have opened a bitbucket account in order to not to clutter the mailing list with archives. very carefully I am trying to make first steps towards XML and ConTeXt (with
MkIV).
Thus, I have enjoyed reading Thomas' MyWay Getting Web Content and pdf-Output
from One Source:
I only kept wondering, how to keep control over the pdf-Output in terms of
fine-tuning the actual typesetting?
A quick search in the archive gave me the answer that is attached below: by
using XMLentities.
But coming back to Thomas' issue Getting Web Content and pdf-Output from One
Source:
What about the other branch, getting web content?
Doesn't the XML source gets spoiled by these inserted XMLentities that only
make sense when following the pdf-Output branch?
Or will these XMLentities be silently ignored when feeding the XML source in a
CMS system or processing further to web content?
Apologies for asking such basic questions...
Any help or tips to deal with this hybrid will be greatly appreciated

I'm not really that advanced in this area myself, but from what I think I understood, you have to distinguish several aspects: 1. The MyWay addressed xhtml and mapping that to ConTeXt output. In html, you have a list of predefined entities (http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_entities.asp) and I don't think that you can simply define your own entities in html - this simply is not the way this is meant to work. So in this case, the answer to your question would be: you're using the wrong tool. 2. In xml, on the other hand, there are almost no predefined entities, you can and must define entities yourself. But xml in itself cannot be shown as web content; you will need a xsl file which translates your xml to some sort of html. This will allow you to define most anything you want, and you can indeed add all these typographical niceties. You can then either use a tool such as xsltproc or saxon to produce a clean html version yourself or you can leave it to the browser. So: if you're primarily thinking of web content that should also be typeset, use html and be aware that you probably won't be able to use all the power of ConTeXt. If you're thinking of content that will be typeset but which you also want to use in other forms (web content being just one of them), use xml. (luatex .50) The reason why there is no italic correction is because luatex sees a simple list of mathords, and it does not apply italic corrections between those when a 'new math font' is being used. (if it did, operators like sin would come out badly). Instead, it relies on ordinary inter-glyph kerning. I am not at all sure what the best solution for this is, as I have no idea how MS Word differentiates between the formula above and 'multi-letter identifiers'. Perhaps luatex should look at the \catcode of the characters in question? Or perhaps these inter-char kerns actually exist in Cambria? I'm not really that advanced in this area myself, but from what I think I
understood, you have to distinguish several aspects:
1. The MyWay addressed xhtml and mapping that to ConTeXt output. In html, you
have a list of predefined entities
(http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_entities.asp) and I don't think that you
can simply define your own entities in html - this simply is not the way this
is meant to work. So in this case, the answer to your question would be:

Source »: first of all I must say that you are « un grand pédagogue »!
Thanks to you, I dared to begin to learn how to use the same file on the web
and as a ConTeXt source, and had a look to the manual written by Hans,
xml-mkiv.pdf, which is indeed great, like all other manuals written by him.
(By the way, without participating to the thread on ConTeXt documentation, when
I was reading Hans' manual on xml-mkiv, I noticed that only on my computer
there are more than 80 different manuals, ranging from manuals for beginners to
high level documentation for experts... For all everyday matters these manuals
contain what I, or an ordinary user, may need).
Regarding the tutorial you have written, although the typo may be corrected by
any cautious reader, I think that, on page 2, lines 5 and 6 of your My Way it
should be

I don't know whether the following observation is correct or not: I had to add
at the beginning of the file « ourenvironment.tex » which must contain the xml
setups, the command
\startenvironment ourenvironment
and at the end of that file:
\stopenvironment
before being able to get what you describe. The curious thing is that even when
I didn't add
\startenvironment ourenvironment
but I did add
\stopenvironment
the xml file was processed by ConTeXt. For beginners like me, I think this
should be said clearly somewhere.
Also, in order to have a better PDF in your examples, at some point I
understood that in order to have appropriate white space between paragraphs and
tables one could, or should, add the tag for preformatted text:

and transform it into \blank by ConTeXt. To this end one has to add the tag
pre to \xmlsetup:

Finally a qusetion: is there a way to obtain an xml file from a rather simple
TeX source, written with ConTeXt commands? Here by simple I mean something
which contains text and math formulas, such as a list of problems and exercises.

Yes, as I said: you have to define your entities, e.g. in the DOCTYPE
declaration. That's something I discussed with Hans a few weeks ago: in the
case you mention, you would have two different definitions of the entity
addhyphen; One in the DOCTYPE, which will be followed by the xslt processor:
!ENTITY addhyphen
(i.e. do nothing about it)
and one in the ConTeXt environment file:
\xmlsetentity{addhyphen}{\-}
which will add the discretionary hyphen. And that's exactly what you wanted:
typographical niceties for pdf output which will not disturb viewing the file
on the web.

Rule of thumb: mkii setups use uppercase XML, mkiv uses lowercase xml
(Introduction of xml-mkiv.pdf).
The main difference between the two is [Hans, is this right? correct me if I'm
wrong]: mkii basically uses a streaming model, i.e., it translates one part of
the xml file after the other. Reusing nodes and elements that have already been
processed is possible, but difficult. mkiv loads the entire xml tree into
memory; you can access any element at any time.

ConTeXt fontsizing has \tx to make the current font style one step smaller, then another \txx does that again. For makeing the size bigger I cannot see anything other than the series \tfa \tfb \tfc \tfd. It would however be nice to also have a similar cumulative effect here. Can there be something like \tsmall available to reduce the font size one step (to a certain minimum, not just \tx\tx = \txx)? And similar \tbig to enlarge the font size one step? It will make the equivalent of HTML's small and big tags easy to implement for typesetting my xml data. Or are there already such things? I don't know whether the following observation is correct or not: I had to

Really? No, I don't think you need to have this. When I process
context --environment=ourenvironment ourfile.xml
it gets processed even without the \start \stop pair you describe.
Also, in order to have a better PDF in your examples, at some point I
understood that in order to have appropriate white space between paragraphs
and tables one could, or should, add the tag for preformatted text:
pre
/pre
and transform it into \blank by ConTeXt. To this end one has to add the tag
pre to \xmlsetup:
\xmlsetsetup{\xmldocument}{html|body|h1|h2|p|em|q|b|table|tr|th|td|pre}{xml:*}
and then
\startxmlsetups xml:pre

to the environment.
Yes, I was bothered by the lack of whitespace too, but I wanted to keep it
simple. adding pre would be one way; another way would be to add something
like \blank[line]\par at the end of the setup commands. But I wasn't sure what
would be more confusing to beginners: the somewhat ugly output or these
additions.
Finally a qusetion: is there a way to obtain an xml file from a rather simple
TeX source, written with ConTeXt commands? Here by simple I mean something
which contains text and math formulas, such as a list of problems and
exercises.
That's a very interesting question. Hans has this intriguing paragraph in the
older manual, example.pdf: In ConTEXt we use a strange but charming way to
handle this conversion: we simply typeset xml. The typeset document (with lots
of angle brackets) is then converted into raw text. A complication is math, but
given that you can embed MathML in your document, this can be passed on
directly. The question how this can be done has been asked several time on the
list, but so far, I haven't seen an answer. Maybe you need to buy Hans lots of
beer at the next ConTeXt meeting, and he will finally fess up!

Do I create my database by creating MyReferences.tex with my text editor? Q2. Is MyReferences.bbl supposed to be created by \setupbibtex when it appears in a document? Q3. In the (old) ConTeXT manual one finds for \underbar{} an example giving underlining of its whole argument. In contrast \underbars{} should not underline the spaces, as demonstrated by the example given.However, the actual behaviour seems just the opposite. Or has the role of these macros changed in the meantime? Hello, I'm using contextminimals with win7 64bit. Since a few days i get the following two messages when I try to update or to do a new install of contextminimals. The message (error report) for two times is: pdftex.exe – Einsprungpunkt nicht gefunden Der Prozedureinsprungpunkt „sfseek64“ wurde in der DLL „kpathsearch510.dll“ nicht gefunden. Sorry, I'm not able to translate this. Context (mkiv) is working ; texexec (mkii) is broken. What can I do? I have more experience with LaTeX than with ConTeXt as related to
bibliographies, so take my answers with the usual grain of salt :)

You can certainly use a text editor. I personally use Jabref (a Java
GUI application, check http://jabref.sf.net), as it simplifies my life
quite a bit (fills in records from online databases such as PubMed,
CiteSeer, etc. so I don't have to type at all!)
I'm used to name the bibtex bibliography files ending in .bib, as that
is what the LaTeX packages would expect ... don't know about ConTeXt,
but in this thread and in the wiki, someone mentioned using the
xampl.bib file that comes with the texlive distribution ... so
probably ConTeXt will use it without asking.
Q2. Is MyReferences.bbl supposed to be created by \setupbibtex when it
appears in a document?
At least in LaTeX, the .bbl file is generated after processing the
\cite commands within the main .tex file.
Q3. I am confused by the \cite[article-full] command in the example. I
thought the specific publication to be cited would be reference by key or

the publication to be cited.
'article-full' _is_ the key or unique identifier for the corresponding
article in the xampl.bib file. In my texlive distribution (Ubuntu) it
is located in /usr/share/texmf-texlive/bibtex/bib/base/xampl.bib
This is the corresponding entry:

The matter of abbreviations for mathematical functions depends on countries, or
maybe on languages: in French, somewhat like in Polish, the trigonometric
functions tangent, cotangent are denoted as \tg, \cotg, and \arcsin is printed
rather as arc{\,}sin. So the solution pointed out by Hans works fine (it is
something like \quote{} which yields different quotation marks depending on how
\mainlanguage[] is set). I just tested the example given by Hans with the
latest beta… (indeed only in mkiv, since mkii is frozen).
Eventually maybe the best solution would be to have
\setupmathematics[mainlanguage=pl]

[NTG-context] Problem with lilypond module
Hi Mojca, Christopher, Hraban, Wolfgang,
since a couple of days the lilypond module doesn't work anymore.
Testfile:
\usemodule[lilypond]
\starttext
There are some notes
\lower 8.2pt\hbox{\lilypond[fragment=true]{\relative c' {c d e fis}}}
embedded in this line.
\stoptext
Context creates a file 1 with 0 Byte and a file lilypond-1 in the
current directory.
In the log i find:
!LilyPond ERROR : File 'lily1-lilypond-1.tmp' was not written!
Processing file lilypond-1 directly with lilypond works.
