Not published in the sense of having an ISBN assigned but the ones I had in
mind were:

- "ConTeXt Mark IV An Excursion" by Ton Otten (ma-cd-en.pdf in the distribution)
- "A not so short introduction to ConTeXt Mark IV" by Joaquín Ataz-López

and your in-progress one.

I agree. Let’s accept this as a rule for further wiki editing.

Also, explain parameters with top priority in Command/setup* pages
(keeping them in Command/define* pages etc. doesn’t hurt, but at least
experienced users should know where to find something without searching).

As I understand it, it can help both readers and writers of the documentation
by clarifying the purpose of each element.

So I started a potential new "welcome page" :
https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Main_Page2

The main lines would be :
- Tutorials: installation pages, step by step examples
- How-to guides: most of the existing wiki pages which are not
https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Commands/ ...
- Discussions and manuals: most of the existing manuals
- Reference : the pages dedicated to commands which already include link to
mailing list, stack exchange, ConTeXt's source
  - https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Category:Commands
  - https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Special:PrefixIndex?prefix=Command%2F

To match the logic of Diátaxis, maybe some material from command pages should be moved from
"Reference" to "How-to guides",
for example, when the examples go beyond "pure description" and begin to deal with
"how-to" cases, e.g. :
- Reference for setuphead: https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/setuphead
- How-to guides for headings: https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Titles

If it make sense, and according to your feedbacks, I can continue to reallocate
existing contents.

Thanks for your feedback and thoughts.

I'm going to be devil's advocate and say that the Context documentation is
*already* in the Diátaxis framework - just not in one place on the Wiki.

- There are at least two books, and a third being written but not yet released:
these fit into the Tutorials and Explanation quadrants.

- There are "My Way" guides linked from the Wiki and the PragmaADE website that fit into
the "How-To Guides" quadrant.

- thank you for these reminders

- And the wiki itself is the "Reference" quadrant.

Clearly these can always be better but they are there already. My recommendation would be
to use the wiki as the reference quadrant and, apart from the first few "main
pages" for people who land there from a web search, it should focus on being the
reference manual. Beginners should be directed to the books.

- Thanks again, the comments are helping to identify a robust method of
distributing content across the quadrants.

Which published books do you mean?

I know of Alan Braslau’s book, AFAIK that will be published in French
“soon” and probably later in English.

My German book is still not ready, while I work on it regularly.

Of course there are a lot of PDFs (most with sources), not only in the
distribution, but also in

Unfortunately, despite all that has been said, we have to realise what
words actually mean in English, and 'infamous' has a negative
connotation. So I recommend rephrasing this and perhaps the entire
paragraph so that it presents a positive perspective on ConTeXt. But if
you mean 'less known' then simply say that: ConTeXt is the less known
alternative to LaTeX. and rather than 'growing minority', say 'growing
number'. We do not say 'ambitioned enthusiasts' in English, but we could
say 'ambitious enthusiasts'.

I agree. It sounds the same as "we're not msword" or "we're not google

In my experience, most people interested in ConTeXt know LaTeX, so it

2024-04-14 Thread Henning Hraban Ramm

Hi Garulfo,

I’m not against the “new order”, but I’d keep the colorful subject
tiles. Different accesses are good IMO (as long as it doesn’t get to
convoluted).

I’d say updating, sorting, restructuring pages is more important than a
new start page.

Yes, please sort out reference vs. tutorials!

Often examples make sense in the reference pages, so the distinction is
a bit fuzzy, but there are enough where a subject/tutorial page would
make more sense than examples spread over several single command pages.

We could also define if the “main” reference page (with examples) is
\definestuff, \setupstuff, or \stuff – IMO \setupstuff makes the most
sense, since usually the others inherit from it.

Often enough, parameters aren’t explained in the reference pages;
sometimes you can find examples using them, but there are too many
holes. I tried to fix that where I could, but too often I don’t
understand enough of the sources to make sense of some setting.

For wiki contributors, it might make sense to combine the markup pages –
in many pages e.g. is used where would
make more sense; often \starttext … \stoptext is not necessary and just
blows up examples; markup is generally somewhat chaotic (e.g. ,

Dear Ursula,

I just downloaded and compiled the same file on Windows 11 64-bit and it
works. I got the PDF output.

2024-01-24 Thread Ursula Hermann
Dear List,

I am sorry, but once again me: I downloaded the last upload from Hans
yesterday, I downloaded context-win64, and tried the test today .

Here is the test:
\starttext

\startmode[mkiv]

\startluacode
tex.sprint("hello")
\stopluacode

\startMPcode
draw textext("hello") rotated 45 ;
\stopMPcode

\framed{hello}

\stopmode

\startnotmode[mkiv]

\startMPcode
draw textext("hello") rotated -45 ;
\stopMPcode

\framed{hello}

\stopnotmode

\stoptext

After compiling in the folder:
Is this because I am the user?

Command Line:   context.exe --synctex=-1 "context-test.tex"
Startup Folder:
C:\Users\Hermann\Downloads\context-win64\tex\texmf-context\tex\context\test\mkiv

startup error : no format file given, quitting

I have downloaded context-win64. But the problem is now, that ConTeXt is not
executable on WinEdt11, which is my TextEditor. It worked well with
context-mswin. There was no problem. I found context.exe now on

After trying to compile the test at work, I got in the Folder:

Okular, MuPDF and pdf.js (Firefox) on Linux look fine.
Gimp and Krita also look fine (but I think they are both using poppler).
LibreOffice Draw does not (font sizes are wrong). However, this is not directly
a PDF viewer, so I'm pretty sure it can be ignored.

Best,
Gerion

Hi Leah,

I used Acrobat DC, SumatraPDF and Firefox in Windows and all programs
displayed and printed your document fine (Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE).

I had no issues before printing LMTX-generated documents.

Many thanks for your work fixing the issues (wrong font display and
printing with some printers),

Pablo

Printing via Firefox, as others have noted, is fuzzy, but nothing is

The latter is because Thunderbird uses pdf.js, and that prints PDFs as

Re: [NTG-context] TEST criticus apparatus with line numbering in footnotes

2022-01-08 Thread Jean-Pierre Delange via ntg-context
The numbering of lines works fine on MacOS High Sierra and on Linux x64:
under linux x64 my CTX version is current version: 2020.01.30 and for
MacOS : 2021.12.30.

Now, I have to play in order to get a two columns of different texts

Re: [NTG-context] Test for displaying a header

2021-08-28 Thread Wolfgang Schuster via ntg-context

Fabrice,

there is difference between putting something on the first page
regardless of the number of pages in your document or do something when
your document contains only a single or more pages.

When you have a header or title which is always placed on the first page
(but not on the following pages) you have to options.

    1. Check the current page when to header is placed which can be
done with \doif{\pagenumber}{1}{...}

    2. Disable the header on the first page (\setupheader[state=high])
and place your own title as a regular element in the running text.

A case where you have to number the number of total pages is when you
try to show the page counter in the form "Page x of y" for 2 or more
pages. In this case you have to check against the value for the total
number of pages which can be done with
\doifnot{\totalnumberofpages}{1}{...}.

Below are two examples which show how the header/title placement works.

 start example 1
\startsetups [header]
    \startframed [width=max,height=max]
    First page header
    \stopframed
\stopsetups

\startsetups [footer]
    Page \userpagenumber\ of \lastuserpagenumber
\stopsetups

\setupheadertexts
  [\doif{\pagenumber}{1}{\directsetup{header}}]

\setupfootertexts
  [\doifnot{\totalnumberofpages}{1}{\directsetup{footer}}]

\starttext
\dorecurse{12}{\samplefile{lorem}\par}
\stoptext
 stop example 1

 start example 2
\startsetups [header]
    \setupheader[state=high]
    \startframed [width=max,height=3cm]
    First page header
    \stopframed
    \blank
\stopsetups

\startsetups [footer]
    Page \userpagenumber\ of \lastuserpagenumber
\stopsetups

\setuppagenumbering
  [location=none]

\setupfootertexts
  [\doifnot{\totalnumberofpages}{1}{\directsetup{footer}}]

\starttext

\setup[header]

\dorecurse{12}{\samplefile{lorem}\par}

\stoptext

I have no idea what you try to achieve but the check for the number of
pages in your document is never used. The layout on the first page is
different from the following pages but this is just how \definelayout
work when you use a number as first argument.

What you have to understand is that a setups-environment is just a macro
definition where you provide the names as argument to the start command.
This means

    \startsetups [header]
    ...
    \stopsetups

works the same way as

    \def\internalname_header
      {...}

but you have to use

    \setups [header]

rather than

    \internalname_header

to get the content of the environment.

This stores the page check in the setups environment  but you never call

content is never evaluated and even if it would be called you create an

Perhaps not the nicest solution, but this works:

\doifvalueelse
   {\lastpage}
   {1}
   {\message{true}}
   {\message{false}}

Same solution but better counter name:

\doifelse{\totalnumberofpages}{1}{...}{...}

Hi,

The idea is to test whether the document contains only one page or not.
If it contains only one page, the header is enabled.
If it contains several pages, the header is enabled only on the first page
but not on the others.

Better is to link to the actual file on Pragma’s site. Hans sometimes changes
the content of the .htm files, but the file itself (in fact most files on
pragma-ade.com) has had that same location for a very long time now.

[NTG-context] test-suite wiki page

2019-02-01 Thread Sanjoy Mahajan
In another thread, Hans had pointed me to the examples of blocks in the
test suite. That leads to my following two questions before I revise
the associated wiki page:

1. The wiki page about the test suite
   <https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Test_suite> contains dead links to
   <https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contexttest> for the project
   homepage and to <https://foundry.supelec.fr/mail/?group_id=21> for
   the mailing list.

   Are those now officially dead; or, more directly stated, would there
   be any objections if I clean up that wiki page to remove those dead
   links?

2. I did find the (a?) test suite on the PRAGMA site at
   <http://www.pragma-ade.nl/download-1.htm> as a 7zip file.  Is that
   the correct location to point people to (apologies for the awful

both makeups and fitting pages aren’t numbered by default.

Either you add this to the preamble:

I hope it helps,

Why "user defined page" #3 is skipped in page numbering, so headers shown are:
1 - 2 - (nothing) - 3 - 4 and "ODD"/"EVEN" and text is "ODD" - "EVEN" - (nothing) -
"ODD" - "EVEN"
instead of:
1 - 2 - (nothing) - 4 - 5 and "ODD"/"EVEN" and text be "ODD" - "EVEN" - (nothing) -

Hello,

how to detect which language set by \mainlanguage[xy] is active?
How to detect it by a) ConTeXt and b) Lua?

Something like:

\mainlanguage[cz]

\ifmainlanguage{cz}
  Do someting
\fi

and

if context.languages.active() == "cz" then
  -- Do somthing

You can use the modes mechanism for this because you can use ** to
check for the main language (set by \mainlanguage) and * for the
current language (set by \language).

\mainlanguage[cs]

\doifelsemode{**cs}{The main language is Czech.}{The main language is

how to detect which language set by \mainlanguage[xy] is active?
How to detect it by a) ConTeXt and b) Lua?

Something like:

\mainlanguage[cz]

\ifmainlanguage{cz}
  Do someting
\fi

and

if context.languages.active() == "cz" then
  -- Do somthing
end
You can use the modes mechanism for this because you can use ** to
check for the main language (set by \mainlanguage) and * for the
current language (set by \language).

\mainlanguage[cs]
%\language[en]

\starttext

\doifelsemode{**cs}{The main language is Czech.}{The main language is
“\currentmainlanguage”.}

\startluacode
if tex.modes["**cs"] then
context("The main language is Czech.")
else
context("The main language is “\\currentmainlanguage”.")
end
\stopluacode

\blank

\doifelsemode{*cs}{The current language is Czech.}{The current language
is “\currentlanguage”.}

\startluacode
if tex.modes["*cs"] then
context("The current language is Czech.")
else
context("The current language is “\\currentlanguage”.")
end
\stopluacode

\stoptext

[NTG-context] test for new page

2015-04-12 Thread Alan BRASLAU
Can someone indicate how one can easily test for a new page in a list
environment (or, indeed, anywhere else)?

In one implementation of a listing, repeated sequential items or
elements of items are suppressed, but I would like to repeat them when
they occur at the top of a new page. I imagine that there could be an
easy test for a new page or the text line number.

Thanks, in advance, for any hints.

I suspect that the default font doesn't have the

All of your three font definitions are wrong because

1. There is only a font with the name “Minion Pro” but no “Minion Pro Serif”.

2. There is only a “Myriad Pro” font but no “Minion Pro Sans” font.

3. The “italic” in the style of the third definition is wrong because italic is
a font alternative. When an unknown value is used for the style the command
uses serif as fallback and therefore overwrites the first line which sets the
serif style as well.

The following example uses the right names (which I used also in the answers of
your previous questions) for both fonts.

\definefontfamily [myfamily] [serif] [Minion Pro]
\definefontfamily [myfamily] [sans]  [Myriad Pro]

\setupbodyfont[myfamily]

Re: [NTG-context] How to test the emptyness of a variable?

2013-11-10 Thread Géry Ogam
Thank you very much Aditya, now it works.

As you said, the trick was to use \doiftextelse{}{}{} function as test of
emptyness function, and \labeltext{chapter} instead of
\currentstructurelabel as variable for the test because the latter was
never found empty, even when it was.

Thus the right code for me is:

\define[1]
\MyConversion{\doifelse{\currentsectioncountervalue}{1}{\doiftextelse{\labeltext{chapter}}{ONE}{#1}}{#1}}
\defineconversion[MyConversion][\MyConversion]
\setuphead[chapter][conversion=MyConversion]

\starttext

\setuplabeltext[chapter=]
\chapter{Cool}
\chapter{Cat}
\chapter{Mouse}

\setuplabeltext[chapter=CHAPTER~]
\setupheadnumber[chapter][0]
\chapter{Cool}
\chapter{Cat}
\chapter{Mouse}

[NTG-context] How to test the emptyness of a variable?

2013-11-07 Thread Géry Ogam
 I'm sure there is also a cleaner TeX way, but I'm not experienced
enough for that.

I think you misunderstood my issue: your Lua way does the same thing than
my TeX way: it displays:

ONE Cool
2 Cat
3 Mouse

but that is NOT what I want. What I want is:

1 Cool
2 Cat
3 Mouse

So I need to check if the chapter label has been set empty or not by the
user, because it is not empty (let's say the user chose the string
CHAPTER~ for the chapter label) I want to display this:

CHAPTER ONE Cool
CHAPTER 2 Cat
CHAPTER 3 Mouse

The way to do that is to check if the variable \currentstructurelabel is
empty, so the code must be:

\define[1]
\MyCommand{\doifelse{\currentsectioncountervalue}{1}{\doifnotemptyelse{\currentstructurelabel}{ONE}{#1}}{#1}}
\setuphead[chapter][deepnumbercommand=\MyCommand]

\starttext
\setuplabeltext[chapter=CHAPTER~]
\chapter{Cool}
\chapter{Cat}
\chapter{Mouse}
\stoptext

\starttext
\setuplabeltext[chapter=]
\chapter{Cool}
\chapter{Cat}
\chapter{Mouse}
\stoptext

But the problem is that in the second case, even if the chapter label is
set empty the command \doifnotemptyelse{\currentstructurelabel} thinks the
variable \currentstructurelabel is not empty. So there must be something
invisible in it, like a strut or something.

[NTG-context] What is the status of ConTeXt's various test suites?

2013-06-10 Thread Sietse Brouwer
Hi, all,

There appear to be a number of test suites in existence.

(1) The suite on pragma-ade.com. I suspect this is the one Hans actually uses.
http://www.pragma-ade.com/download-1.htm (click on cont-tst.7z)

(2) The project on foundry.supelec.fr. Most recent file is 3 years
old, and most of them are 6-7 years old, AFAICT.
Summary: https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contexttest/
Files: https://foundry.supelec.fr/scm/viewvc.php/?root=contexttest
This is also the suite described on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Test_suite

(3) The ConTeXt unofficial test suite
https://github.com/melmothx/context-unofficial-test-suite

I want to update the [[Test suite]] page to make it more accurate. So,
I'm asking y'all: any inaccuracies in the text at the bottom of this
e-mail?

Cheers,
Sietse

* The test suite at pragma-ade.com is Hans's test suite; he runs this
suite before uploading a new beta (most times). To contribute a test
to this suite, write it in an e-mail and send it to the mailing list.

QUESTION: when one downloads and unzips this file in a directory, how
does one run it?

* The test suite at github is managed by users, especially Marco
Patzer. To run the suite, just download it and run `run-suite.pl`.

* The test suite at foundry.supelec.fr is no longer being used.

QUESTION: are the tests in it already transferred to Hans or Marco's
test suite? If not, is that still something we want to do, or can we
just bury this suite entirely?

not true: I add examples when I add new functionality and sometimes turn
examples from the mailing list in suite examples. I don't run the
suite before a beta (I did when the most recent current was made) but
Lukáš runs them every now and then and send me an overview of files that
fail at his end (some files that need special fonts are excluded). So, I
fix (when needed) issues that show up with the suite.

QUESTION: when one downloads and unzips this file in a directory, how
does one run it?

Lukáš has his own scripts.

Here I can run this:

mtxrun --script testsuite --compare --oldname=cld-compare-old
--newname=cld-compare-new   --pattern=**/*.cld
mtxrun --script testsuite --compare --oldname=mkiv-compare-old
--newname=mkiv-compare-mkiv --pattern=**/*.mkiv
mtxrun --script testsuite --compare --oldname=mkvi-compare-old
--newname=mkvi-compare-mkiv --pattern=**/*.mkvi
mtxrun --script testsuite --compare --oldname=tex-compare-old
--newname=tex-compare-new   --pattern=**/*.tex

but that's probably a different method. As it takes a while I must admit
that i only ran it for the current (as I do have more fonts on my system).

* The test suite at github is managed by users, especially Marco
Patzer. To run the suite, just download it and run `run-suite.pl`.

Indeed. That one compares output too I think and it can generate reports
as well.

* The test suite at foundry.supelec.fr is no longer being used.

I don't know.

I don't know. I happily leave that to others to sort out.

Yes. (But Hans' point is also true.)

I don't know. There is a high chance that lots of things had to be
synchronized just because the date is different than it used to be on
the old server. Maybe you observed that? But I didn't do any timings
either.

(Hans' explanation is also possible, but less likely.)

I'm actually curious about the highest speed that people can get when
fetching files from the server.

Thanks for noticing. ConTeXt itself has been updated, I still need to
figure out why it hasn't been synced to the distribution.

[NTG-context] request for a few volunteers to test distribution on new server

2012-11-29 Thread Mojca Miklavec
Dear ConTeXters,

we will point the distribution to the new server later today (for a
moment without any significant changes). Before we do that I would
like to ask some of you to try out
   ./first-install.sh --server=distribution.contextgarden.net
to make sure that I didn't do any obvious mistake on the way.

The changes that I'm aware of are the following:

1.) changed names of math fonts

deleting fonts/opentype/public/lm/lmmath-regular.otf
deleting fonts/opentype/public/tex-gyre/texgyretermes-math.otf
deleting fonts/opentype/public/tex-gyre/texgyrepagella-math.otf
fonts/opentype/public/lm-math/lmodern-math.otf
fonts/opentype/public/tex-gyre-math/texgyrepagella-math.otf
fonts/opentype/public/tex-gyre-math/texgyretermes-math.otf

2.) some font documentation is missing, I forgot to include Asana Math
(fixing it) and there are some euler fonts there were not present
earlier (I need to look into that)

3.) gone: /doc, /experimental, /pragma, /texlive (none of those is
used, but /doc is now under /current/doc)

4.) alpha and dated context versions are gone (hardly make any sense
since they are too old and hardly usable)

5.) I see lots of (so far unexplained) changes in TikZ. I didn't try
to figure out what those are.

6.) I didn't set up headers/footers/icons yet to make the few
semi-(non-)useful notes on the website.

Mojca

(PS: there are other changes on the way, but I first want to make sure
that the old distribution will keep working as it did now.)

Hello there.

The line numbering positioning is messed up and overlaps the text, or is
on the wrong side. With TL12 the output was good.

[NTG-context] [test suite] Bibtex-related test fails to compile.

2012-10-22 Thread Marco Pessotto

I've imported most of the testfiles kindly provided by Hans. Now the
test suite has grown to ~900 files. I'm running them in chunks and I'll
keep reporting, even if I don't need the feature. If you prefer me to
post to another list, please let me know.

https://github.com/melmothx/context-unofficial-test-suite/tree/master/src/mkiv/bibtex

collapse-001.tex fails to compile. See below the log.

progressive-005.tex picks a different LM font, but probably because I
don't have the required fonts installed and it's using a different one
as fallback (I don't know which one is supposed to be the good one,
probably noone :-).

The other differences are just due to different distances, so I'm
promoting them to references.

Best wishes

[NTG-context] Test suite report

2012-10-21 Thread Marco Pessotto

Hello there.

Aditya added a couple of testfiles. Thanks a lot. I encourage anyone
reporting bugs to send a minimal example to me too, via mail or via pull
requests on github, so people running the tests can catch regressions.

I modified the code, so a unique filename for each test is not required
anymore.

I promoted to references the PDF which have a minimal shifting, because
they generated too much noise, but I left one just as a reminder of the
different distance between columns.

Issue still pending (as far as I know):

https://github.com/melmothx/context-unofficial-test-suite/blob/master/src/base/core-ver/core-ver-003.tex

 Number should continue.There are several long lines. Are the numbers correctly
 managed with long lines?
 \startcode[continue]

But it doesn't continue and it's reset to 1.

Cheers

there is s zip with lots of test files, it might make sense to take some
from them (not all make sense in a visual compare)

There are more then 800 files in
http://www.pragma-ade.com/context/latest/cont-tst.7z

Any clue about which directory can be safely dropped?
