[nysbirds-l] Maine: Gray Kingbird 10/31; poss. Martin sighting, Rockland Co.

2010-10-31 Thread Tom Fiore
Coming soon after a sighting from Savannah N.Y., this Maine Gray
Kingbird is of interest:
http://groups.google.com/group/maine-birds/browse_thread/thread/4524cb204d7da84a#
- - -
Today, Sunday Oct. 31, while counting raptors at Hook Mt. in Rockland
County (with views of the Hudson River and south to Nyack, the nearest
town), I noticed a bird in flight that only very briefly appeared just
east of the summit where the Hook Mt. hawk-watch is conducted - the
bird appeared to be a Martin species. I have very recently (only a few
weeks ago) had the opportunity to study several S. American species as
well as wintering Purple Martins and this bird did not look quite like
any of those, which included Gray-breasted and Brown-chested. I would
only speculate that this bird could have been of a 'Caribbean' form or
species, but unfortunately the bird did not reappear up around the
summit of the mountain. The observation came in mid-afternnoon. There
were no other martin or swallows seen. For those curious the area
where I studied 3 martin spp. not long ago was Amazonian Brazil. The
raptors were flying nicely today and it was also a fairly good day for
waterbird migration, over the river.

1 Short-eared Owl was observed earlier, near the Piermont marsh also
along the Hudson in Rockland Co. - that seen around sunrise.

[nysbirds-l] California and Thayer's Gulls - Niagara Falls

2010-10-31 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
Today, Betsy and I tried for the adult CALIFORNIA GULL that was found
Saturday at Goat Island by Jim Pawlicki. We went straight to the Three
Sisters Islands and found the gull from the bridge between the last two
islands. This was somewhere around 2:30. We had a nice study for several
minutes until all the gulls flew up in a panic, no doubt flushed by an
unseen raptor. It was a couple of minutes later when Andy Guthrie showed up
- ouch! Fortunately, Andy persisted and finally saw the bird around 5:00.
He also found an adult THAYER'S GULL at the same location, though looking
from Goat Island. We were able to get photos of both of these birds.

We also had an adult LITTLE GULL at the Whirlpool. Numbers of Bonaparte's
Gulls seemed to be less than a thousand from Fort Niagara to above the
falls.

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Sullivan County

2010-10-31 Thread vanhaas
Good birding continues in the county. The GREAT CORMORANT continues at the
Bashakill. I know a few people missed it during the day this weekend, it has
been hanging out in a resaca/oxbow in the channel out from the observation
tower on the "Birch Trail". If you don't want to take the hike, the bird shows
up at its favorite bog every afternoon between 3:30 and 4:00pm, directly out
from the main boat launch. It performed for a number of people again this
afternoon. In other areas, shorebirds continue at Swan Lake with a possible
record number of Wilson's Snipe(32) present today. The hawk watch was very
productive today as well with two GOLDEN EAGLES among the passing waves of
Red-tailed Hawks. Duck numbers continue to increase with all the expected
species represented. Good Birding! John Haas

bird appeared to be a Martin species.
