[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owl at the Calverton Grasslands

2013-12-12 Thread robert adamo
Thanks to Mellissa Hahn's phone call late this afternoon, I was able to see
the snowy she had found on a quick trip through the grasslands, after
teaching school today, and before returning to school tonight, to assist
her music students in presenting a holiday concert for the community.
Hopefully their performance was as good as the owl's !

Before I arrived, the bird had been on top of a sign close to the short
runway, when an interaction with a passing N. Harrier, caused it to fly
past the long runway, landing on a short cedar tree in the middle of the
grass. I had just got on it, when it took off and made the 1st of 4 stops.
It's 2nd stop brought it to ~ 100 yards of Route 25, with both flights
being so low and swift, we expected it to pounce on something. We then
moved and parked on Rt.25. In a short while the bird lifted, and proceeded
to fly toward the road. Having excellent views as it proceeded north, we
expected the bird to continue across the road, but don't you know, it
landed on a fence post ~ 50' e/o us...yess! It stayed there ~ 10
seconds before crossing the road and headed toward the FAA tower, before
"buzzing" a deer and landing on a red post in the direction of Rt. 25A.

After Mellissa left, I decided there was still enough light to "luck into"
a Short-eared Owl. I looked for the next 15 minutes, but I had had my luck
for the day. Oh well, there is always tomorrow and the gyrfalcon !

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Central Park Bird Report

2013-12-12 Thread Patricia Pollock
Just 3 days until 2013 Xmas Bird Count (8am South Pumphouse Reservoir)

12/12/13 Thursday
Ringed-Neck Duck continues at Reservoir, SW section around 11-12, still tucked
in
Mary Kelly was circling the Reservoir again to try to pick up Common Merganser
she did see yesterday.  In weather like this, underwater is warmer than above
water, so most likely she missed it trying to avoid slipping on the ice while
scanning and exercising.  She doesn't have a computer to make a report but if
anyone is out tomorrow, keep the above in mind.
About 8 Hooded Mergansers
About 10 American Coots
Small # of Ruddies
Over 100-125 Northern Shovelers
1 (m) Bufflehead
Canada Geese - a good flock
a few Blackbirds inside park @ 90 St/CPW
last I heard of the Northern Pintail it was seen @ Meer

Veryl saw a Hermit Thrush along narrow northwest strip of Pinetum

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owl on the River

2013-12-12 Thread Sean Camillieri
After my initial sighting of the owl earlier this morning, it remained among
the barges. The workers enjoyed it's company and thought it was "cool" and
"awesome". I work on this sight and saw no signs of harassment. I last saw the
owl at 4:00 pm on a barge with piles on it. No humans around and very minimal
boat traffic at this hour since the work day is almost done That is most
likely where the bird will stay for the night since it had its eyes closed as I
passed by. Piermont Pier and the river towns on both sides of the Hudson should
keep their eyes peeled!

[nysbirds-l] Niagara River Gulls

2013-12-12 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
On Wednesday Jean Iron, Kevin McLaughlin, Betsy Potter, and I birded the
Niagara River from the Adam Beck overlook at the power plants up to the
control gates in Chippewa and back again to Adam Beck. There were more
gulls in this area on this day than I have seen at any other time this
season. It was great! Adam Beck was really amazing with at least 20
ICELAND GULLS, 3 THAYER'S GULLS, 3 GLAUCOUS GULLS, and 4 LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULLS, including a sharply marked juvenile. One of the Lesser Black-backed
Gulls, an adult, was an interesting pale example of the species and it also
had bright orange-yellow legs and feet (almost all Lessers have much duller
greenish yellow legs and feet at this time of year). We identified it based
on the heavy head and neck streaking and relatively little white in the
wingtips. Another alternative is that it has some Herring Gull genes in it
from a hybrid pairing of a previous generation. Its size was close to that
of a Herring Gull, just slightly smaller, so probably a male. In addition
here, we had a possible adult HERRING X GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL and three
other apparent hybrid gulls, possibly HERRING X LESSER BLACK-BACKED (we were
unable to turn any of these into a Vega Gull, though we tried!). Above the
falls, we had 2 GLAUCOUS, 3 ICELAND, and a handful of LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULLS. We also had a slightly darker-mantled adult gull, out on the large
flat rock island below the control gates, that appeared to be the bird which
has been suggested as being a Yellow-legged Gull. Unfortunately, its legs
were never visible and since we had all seen it before, we moved on before
we were able to confirm that. Photos of the gull with yellow legs can be
seen on my Flickr site, starting about the third row down:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/107683885@N07/

There was also a large influx of BONAPARTE'S GULLS, with many at Adam Beck,
the Whirlpool, and above the falls. The only other small gull we saw this
day was a juvenile BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE at the Adam Beck overlook, picked
out by Betsy.

We did not find the Purple Sandpipers nor the Red Phalarope that were above
the falls in the beginning of the month.

Good birding!

Willie

DIRECTIONS:

Many of the spots along the Niagara River can be viewed from either side but
the Adam Beck overlook on the Ontario side is hard to beat. This overlook
is right across from the (NY) Robert Moses Power Plant in Queenston,
Ontario, about 0.6 miles (1 km) south of the Lewiston-Queenston bridge. The
pull-off below the Control Gates in Chippewa, Ontario is about a mile above
the falls. It is just north of where Upper Falls Blvd meets the Niagara
Parkway, which runs along the river. There are no parking signs here but
the police tolerate birders if they stay near their cars.

2013-12-12 Thread Sean Camillieri
After my initial sighting of the owl earlier this morning, it remained among
the barges. The workers enjoyed it's company and thought it was cool and
awesome.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park Bird Report

2013-12-12 Thread Patricia Pollock
Just 3 days until 2013 Xmas Bird Count (8am South Pumphouse Reservoir)

12/12/13 Thursday
Ringed-Neck Duck continues at Reservoir, SW section around 11-12, still tucked
in
Mary Kelly was circling the Reservoir again to try to pick up Common Merganser
she did see yesterday.  In weather like this, underwater is warmer than above
water, so most likely she missed it trying to avoid slipping on the ice while
scanning and exercising.  She doesn't have a computer to make a report but if
anyone is out tomorrow, keep the above in mind.
About 8 Hooded Mergansers
About 10 American Coots
Small # of Ruddies
Over 100-125 Northern Shovelers
1 (m) Bufflehead
Canada Geese - a good flock
a few Blackbirds inside park @ 90 St/CPW
last I heard of the Northern Pintail it was seen @ Meer

Veryl saw a Hermit Thrush along narrow northwest strip of Pinetum

It stayed there ~ 10
seconds before crossing the road and headed toward the FAA tower, before
buzzing a deer and landing on a red post in the direction of Rt. 25A.

After Mellissa left, I decided there was still enough light to luck into
a Short-eared Owl. I looked for the next 15 minutes, but I had had my luck
for the day. Oh well, there is always tomorrow and the gyrfalcon !

Cheers,
Bob
