[nysbirds-l] Forest Park & Hempstead Lake State Park

2014-05-05 Thread redknot
I spent the day birding at Forest Park and Hempstead Lake State Park and they
didn't disappoint. Due to a commitment I couldn't make it to Forest Park until
about 11 am but a walk to the waterhole, which is considerably larger than I
have ever seen it, was immediately productive. In short order I saw a Northern
waterthrush, several Black-and white warbler (both sexes), Common yellowthroat,
Blue-winged warbler, several Palm warblers, a Magnolia warbler, Black-throated
Green and Blue warblers, many Yellow-rumped warblers, a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak,
a Scarlet Tanager, a White-eyed and Blue-headed Vireo, two Swamp Sparrows, and
several Baltimore Orioles. A short walk south toward the tracks produced a few
Blue-gray gnatcatchers, a Gray-cheeked thrush, a Veery, four Ovenbirds, and a
prolonged killer view of a Nashville warbler, in addition to several more
Parulas and Black-and-whites. As like yesterday most of the birds were low,
feeding in the understory and subcanopy. It was interesting to watch them as
most seemed to be feeding on tiny midge or gnat-like insects and not small
caterpillars. On my way out saw three more Ovenbirds near the perimeter road.

Hempstead Lake SP was quieter with the highlight being a very accommodating
Cerulean warbler in the wooded section adjacent to the "dog-run" field which I
assume is the same bird seen yesterday. Also saw several Parulas,
Black-and-whites, male and female redstarts, and a Black-throated Green
warbler.

2014-05-05 Thread Thomas Fiore
On Newfoundland, the reports just get more & more impressive... the
(up to 2) Common Redshanks are an extreme rarity for North America...
and none of the other recent finds there is exactly 'shabby'...!!!

Black-tailed Godwit - 9
Common Redshank - 2
European Whimbrel - 1
Dunlin (probably Icelandic origin) - 1
European Golden Plover - (+ / -) 150
Northern Wheatear - 16

Bonus Bird!
Ross's Gull - 1

Congrats to Richard Veit, PhD, who found a Black-necked Stilt at the
Goethal's Bridge Pond in Staten Island (Richmond County, N.Y. City) on
Sunday, the bird being seen there again this Monday by multiple
observers. The area may be accessed by an S40 bus from the Staten
Island ferry terminal, in addition to car. It may be best to look in a
mapping app. for directions - I have not been to the site that
recently. (It is in the vicinity of the bridge for which the pond is
"named")
.
A male Townsend's Warbler was photographed in Sussex County New Jersey
on Sunday 4 May 2014, by observer Alan Boyd, at the "Walpack Valley
I.B.A. = Important Bird Area. Mentioning this not so esp. as a
suggestion to look for this individual as much as to be aware of this
possibility in NY State at this time of year... we can hope.

. ... ..
Monday, 5 May, 2014 - Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

Sections of the park continued to have excellent variety & some
obvious highlight birds... while some areas seemed relatively quieter,
particularly as the day went along. A KENTUCKY Warbler remained in...
(well, to read on about that little escapade, & a definite 'rant' on
illegally UNleashed dogs, which is about their owners, and about the
managers of the park - see below) - and there were some other
warblers that were either highly cooperative &/or more difficult, but
at least were seen. Among these an Orange-crowned Warbler was at
times seen well, even superbly while often singing, at the Ramble's
maintenance meadow. At least 21 additional warbler species were seen
today (& I heard a rumor? that the Yellow-throated Warbler was found
yet again south of the Tavern on the Green... which if so would add
another to that tally by many observers. Of less-expected species as
the season progresses, male Pine Warbler & Louisiana Waterthrush were
both still present in the Ramble, and a number of Palm Warblers as well.

Obviously a Chuck-will's-widow makes the highlight list, a life bird
for at least some who had quite good views at various times, mainly in
the Maintenance Meadow area, although initial sightings included some
in-flight views. Those views allowed viewing of the relatively pointed
wingtips, as compared with the blunter-ended wings of an Eastern Whip-
poor-will, which this bird decidedly was not. In addition to that
feature (pointed out first by Alan Messer, thanks Alan), the bird in
sight was very obviously large, having wingspread greater than a
female Merlin & so much larger than any whip-poor-will ever would or
could be; also this bird was almost richly rufous-reddish brown in
overall coloration. There were many hundreds of photos taken. The
Chuck-will's-widow was reportedly in place for almost the entire day,
through - whatever hour certain folks may have awaited it's evening
fly-off & potential hunting forays, or, its potential departure flight
on to, where next!

A male Summer Tanager was quite the crowd-pleaser for many observers,
often in trees near the lake shore from just east of Bow Bridge. A
singing Tennesssee Warbler (perhaps several) gave some quite good
views in some of that area as well as just north of the Point. In the
north woods, 2 male (singing at times) Hooded Warblers were
occasionally being seen simultaneously, mostly in an area of higher
ground well north of the Loch. There were many other avian highlights
for a lot of observers, in various parts of the park. A Golden-crowned
Kinglet was running a bit late, as have a modest number of other
usually-April migrants, locally this spring.

An excellent report from the Stuyvesant-town Manhattan building
complex and green-space within, located east of First Ave. in the
teens (streets), includes a male HOODED Warbler that has been seen
there for at least several days including today, Mon.; this is not an
expected or regular migrant in this location (thanks to Anne Lazarus
for the detailed report & historical records for this oasis of bird-
habitat in downtown Manhattan - as well as to all who make
observations in less-well-known such locations); also being seen
recently in the Stuyvesant-town grounds have been, among others, Great
Crested Flycatcher, Gray Catbird, Veery, Wood Thrush, Hermit Thrush,
Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Ovenbird,

[nysbirds-l] Rockefeller Preserve, Sleepy Hollow, Westchester Co.

2014-05-05 Thread Robert Lewis
All,

I made a brief foray today to the Rockefeller Preserve, parking at the free
area on Sleepy Hollow Road, then walking east and later west on Old Sleepy
Hollow Trail, from around 3:30 pm to 5:00.  This was certainly not an optimal
time, so I didn't expect a lot, but it was very good.

Golden-crowned Kinglet
Tufted Titmouse
Am. Crow
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Yellow Warbler, lots
Blue-winged Warbler
Black-and-white Warbler
Northern Parula
Black-throated Blue Warbler, adult male
American Redstart, many, male and female.
Rose-brested Grosbeak
Catbird, lots
Phoebe
House Wren
Scarlet Tanager
Veery

Robin
Cardinal
Orchard Oriole: pair, beautiful male and female, along "Natures Trail"

And a tantalizing too brief look at a bird that seemed to be a female
Connecticut Warbler.  I saw it skulking low, attracted by my pishing, along the
"Natures Trail".   Large warbler, eye ring, drab olive yellowish.  I didn't see
the tail.  Call note matches description in Warblers book by Dunn and Garrett.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Chuck has been refound

2014-05-05 Thread Gabriel Willow
It's still there as of 7:45pm, in a horse chestnut tree to the NE of
maintenance. A group of birders are there waiting for it to fly, but it looks
content on its branch for now.

Also seen in same tree or the plane tree next door: a male Blackburnian
Warbler, a female Baltimore Oriole, a Ruby-throated Hummingbird, and a pair of
Warbling Vireos...

Nice evening!

Bird was still there at 4:30. NW corner. It was resting when I arrived and then
started to feed. Walked out of view behind Phragmities. Winds won't turn SW
until later in the week so bird may hang around if winds remain NW.
Good luck if you go.
There's an access path west of path at end of GH road by large tree.

[nysbirds-l] Chuck-will's-widow, C.P., NYC, 5/5

2014-05-05 Thread Thomas Fiore
Monday, cinco de Mayo (5 May), 2014

Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

A relatively cooperative, slightly high-in-trees but in sun & open
branches, CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW has already delighted 100+++ observers
through the mid-morning; it was still sitting - hoping that Blue Jays
& ass'td. other birds don't harass it further - on a limb of a
Sycamore tree, located (& see best from) at the west side of the
Maintenance Field in the Ramble's "northeast-most" quadrant - the bird
about 2/3 or so up in the tallish Sycamore, set back slightly from
lower trees that form the low western canopy of foliage at that
location, and looking due west from a bit south of the centerpoint of
the "meadow". (The stone buildings with men's & ladies rooms are to
the right/north, if one is in this location & looking in the direction
one needed to, to see the nightjar. It's been chased & harassed a few
times already from the initial sightings. I and many others were still
observing it there through 11:30 a.m.; many photos have been taken,
even good sketches done by a prominent artist who paints & draws
birds. Also present at the same time in some of the smaller & lower
flowering trees (crabapple & cherry) has been an often-singing &
sometimes very obliging Orange-crowned Warbler... and many other birds
in the Ramble area; male Summer Tanager working trees from the lake
shore east of Bow Bridge (Ramble side) up to nearly The Point, and
"oven" areas - & lots of nice birds also have been seen in the n. end
of the park again. At least 20+ species of warblers were found in the
Ramble alone this a.m.

good luck,

[nysbirds-l] Central Park, NYC: CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW

2014-05-05 Thread Anders Peltomaa
Hi all,
Relaying reports from fellow birders who are out in the Ramble area this
morning.

First the biggie, from Morgan Tingley:
"Chuck-Wills-Widow flew over Maintenance. Now heading toward Polish Statue.
Seen well."

The CWWI was later refound "Resting now by steps down from belvedere toward
Tupelo" (Brian Padden)

Other birds include, continuing Summer Tanager seen high up in the trees
near the Riviera, shore opposite Bethesda Fountain. (Doug Kurz)

An occasionally singing Orange-crowned warbler at Maintenance Field.

No report of the Kentucky warbler, yet.

I am hoping that the Chuck is refound and that more birders (including
those of us who are working) get a chance to see this great bird for the
city.

viva migration,

Anders Peltomaa

[nysbirds-l] Bryant Park, NYC 5-5

2014-05-05 Thread gabriel willow
I led the Monday edition of my twice-weekly tour of Bryant Park this morning.
BP has been strangely quiet this Spring, especially recently compared to
certain *other* small urban parks in NYC.  Today we managed a fairly
respectable list of 20 or so species, although we had to work for them.

White-throated Sparrows were the most evident species, hopping and singing on
all sides.  Gray Catbirds were also much in evidence, a huge change considering
I hadn't seen any at all before Friday.  Today we spotted a dozen or more.
Also seen (mostly single birds) were an unidentified small flycatcher high in
the trees near the SW corner of the park (I think it was an Eastern Wood-Pewee
based on long primary projection, but it looked very yellow could've been
the morning light), an American Robin, Hermit Thrush, House Wren,
Black-and-white Warbler, Ovenbirds, a singing Northern Waterthrush (which went
unseen), Common Yellowthroat, Eastern Towhee, Swamp Sparrow and a flyover
Baltimore Oriole.

In front of the Library, there was a Wood Thrush hanging out in the honey
locusts with a Brown Thrasher, and two Turkey Vultures sailed overhead down 5th
Ave.

Not great, not bad...

Cheers,

Gabriel Willow

[nysbirds-l] Forest Park - Summer Tanager, Blackburnian, Hooded Warbler

2014-05-05 Thread Cesar Castillo
Dear All,

This morning produced two Blackburnians at Forest Park and later in the morning
(8:50AM) Danny Melore got me and Lisa Schepke on a very beautiful Summer
Tanager.  In the same area there was also a Hooded Warbler (on the asphalt
jogging path that parallels Park Lane South just north-east of the rail-road
tracks).  A Louisiana Waterthrush was still to be found at the Water hole-e
lake.

[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt, NYC 5/4

2014-05-05 Thread Thomas Fiore
Sunday eve., 4 May, 2014 - Staten Island, N.Y. City

Just learned of this... a Black-necked Stilt was found & then seen by
at least 3 observers on Staten Island's north side, at the Goethal's
Bridge Pond area; a report apparently sent out just after 8 p.m. [?]
and the Stilt apparently "best seen from Trailer Park Row A". The
finder is Richard Veit. Should the stilt be seen again this morning,
word will go out again; perhaps first via the SINaturalist group-list.

(odds on this being the Prospect Park bird of the other day? or are
there a number of these north of typical range now...?0

good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Chuck-will's-widow, C.P., NYC, 5/5

2014-05-05 Thread Thomas Fiore
Monday, cinco de Mayo (5 May), 2014

Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

A relatively cooperative, slightly high-in-trees but in sun open
branches, CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW has already delighted 100+++ observers
through the mid-morning; it was still sitting - hoping that Blue Jays
ass'td. other birds don't harass it further - on a limb of a
Sycamore tree, located ( see best from) at the west side of the
Maintenance Field in the Ramble's northeast-most quadrant - the bird
about 2/3 or so up in the tallish Sycamore, set back slightly from
lower trees that form the low western canopy of foliage at that
location, and looking due west from a bit south of the centerpoint of
the meadow. (The stone buildings with men's ladies rooms are to
the right/north, if one is in this location looking in the direction
one needed to, to see the nightjar. It's been chased harassed a few
times already from the initial sightings. I and many others were still
observing it there through 11:30 a.m.; many photos have been taken,
even good sketches done by a prominent artist who paints draws
birds. Also present at the same time in some of the smaller lower
flowering trees (crabapple cherry) has been an often-singing
sometimes very obliging Orange-crowned Warbler... and many other birds
in the Ramble area; male Summer Tanager working trees from the lake
shore east of Bow Bridge (Ramble side) up to nearly The Point, and
oven areas - lots of nice birds also have been seen in the n. end
of the park again. At least 20+ species of warblers were found in the
Ramble alone this a.m.

good luck,

Tom Fiore

Bird was still there at 4:30. NW corner. It was resting when I arrived and then
started to feed. Walked out of view behind Phragmities. Winds won't turn SW
until later in the week so bird may hang around if winds remain NW.
Good luck if you go.
There's an access path west of path at end of GH road by large tree.

[nysbirds-l] Rockefeller Preserve, Sleepy Hollow, Westchester Co.

2014-05-05 Thread Robert Lewis
All,

I made a brief foray today to the Rockefeller Preserve, parking at the free
area on Sleepy Hollow Road, then walking east and later west on Old Sleepy
Hollow Trail, from around 3:30 pm to 5:00.  This was certainly not an optimal
time, so I didn't expect a lot, but it was very good.

Golden-crowned Kinglet
Tufted Titmouse
Am. Crow
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Yellow Warbler, lots
Blue-winged Warbler
Black-and-white Warbler
Northern Parula
Black-throated Blue Warbler, adult male
American Redstart, many, male and female.
Rose-brested Grosbeak
Catbird, lots
Phoebe
House Wren
Scarlet Tanager
Veery

Robin
Cardinal
Orchard Oriole: pair, beautiful male and female, along Natures Trail

And a tantalizing too brief look at a bird that seemed to be a female
Connecticut Warbler.  I saw it skulking low, attracted by my pishing, along the
Natures Trail.   Large warbler, eye ring, drab olive yellowish.  I didn't see
the tail.  Call note matches description in Warblers book by Dunn and Garrett.

[nysbirds-l] Forest Park Hempstead Lake State Park

Cerulean warbler in the wooded section adjacent to the dog-run field which I
assume is the same bird seen yesterday. Also saw several Parulas,
Black-and-whites, male and female redstarts, and a Black-throated Green
warbler.
