[nysbirds-l] WHITE-WINGED DOVE - Jones Beach, Nassau Co.

2016-05-12 Thread Taylor Sturm
Posting on Brendan Fogarty's behalf:

Brendan just had a White-winged Dove fly in to the same area in which he was
viewing a Bay-breasted Warbler amongst other warblers; on the fisherman's road
near the coast guard station at Jones Beach SP. From what I understand he is
trying to relocate the bird at the moment.

Good birding.

[nysbirds-l] White-winged Dove NO - Jones Beach (incl. photos from earlier)

2016-05-12 Thread Brendan Fogarty
Hi everyone,
As of 11 AM, extensive searching had not produced the dove since the original
flyby at 8:45. It seemed to land near the beginning of the fisherman's road,
but shrubs blocked my view of its final descent. The spot I imagined was:
40.589385, -73.557984
Shorebirds and warblers around the Coast Guard Area were unremarkable save for
a Bay-breasted Warbler, singing very infrequently in shrubs just west of the
Coast Guard Station property itself. A Willow Flycatcher was at the turnaround.
Numbers were very low otherwise.
At Hempstead Lake SP this morning, a Black-billed Cuckoo continues, today heard
between the field 3 lot and MacDonald Pond to the east.

2016-05-12 Thread Isaac Grant
Park at entrance off of Amboy Road. Walk up main path and soon there will be a
path on left. Maybe 100 feet in is a wooden bridge. Bird was first heard
singing a full song a couple times and then seen there. It flew towards main
path and landed in brush bordering the main path just before a culvert spills
out into a tiny puddle. I left the bird there.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park, NYC Wed., 5/11

2016-05-12 Thread Thomas Fiore

Wednesday, 11 May, 2016 -

Some acts witnessed by multiple birding observers regarding a Bobolink
& a variety of other migrants in Central Park may have come as close
as, or over the line (as understood by any & all reasonable birders &
other persons) on what is an illegal activity, and if any such
behavior should continue, federal authorities with enforcement powers
will be contacted regarding this. The meaning of an illegal activity
is: breaking the law whether local, county, state, or federal. Please
act in a respectful manner to wildlife, and any persons witnessing
what may be illegal activity should make an attempt to video-record
such activity, & to potentially share with officials with enforcement
powers. No wildlife, nor its peaceful observers, ought be harmed,
harassed, nor in any way made to feel unnecessarily uncomfortable, and
certainly not threatened, in the peaceful and law-abiding act of
enjoying the spring, or any bird-watching season. Thanks for
understanding, and being for the birds best interests.

Many other migrant birds continue to be seen in Central Park (& other
city parks & green-spaces) while the sheer numbers of the prior
several days starting especially last Sunday have been a bit lower.

[nysbirds-l] Doodletown Road 5/12

2016-05-12 Thread Peter Reisfeld
I made my annual pilgrimage to Doodletown Road today in the pleasant company of
Bob and Collen Veltri. We saw good numbers of ceruleans, including females on
nest. Hoodeds were everywhere, often singing alternate songs, one of which was
a spitting image of a yellow throated warbler. When we finally saw the bird who
was singing, it was the first time in my life I was disappointed to see a
hooded warbler.

Our main target , however, was the Kentucky. We were encouraged when we ran
into Tom Burke and Gail Benson at the intersection of Doodletown and Pleasant
Valley road who had just seen the bird further up Doodletown. The bird had
been seen just past the bridge as well as further up the hill, but we struck
out at both sites. We returned after birding Pleasant Valley to reports that
the bird was again singing just past the bridge. We hurried up the road only to
run into a road block. There was a group of hikers that decided to do their
business right where the bird was singing, and their mates asked us to wait to
respect their privacy. It seemed like forever, but the bird was still singing
when we were finally allowed entry. That’s when one of the hikers blew her
whistle to alert all their members they were leaving. With my hearing aids
turned all the way up, it almost pierced my ear drums. Needless to say, after
that the bird was gone.

We licked our wounds and headed further up the hill to the alternate location.
But before long we were rewarded with ground level views, as the Kentucky was
attracted by a termite hatch in a fallen log.

Here’s a link to videos of the Kentucky, a male and female cerulean on nest,
and a female cerulean building her nest.

https://flic.kr/s/aHskA1GEim

Just another reminder for those thinking of coming up on Sunday, that Rt 9
will be closed on May 15 until 1PM for to a bicycle race.

Happy spring birding!

Peter

[nysbirds-l] WHITE-WINGED DOVE - Jones Beach, Nassau Co.

2016-05-12 Thread Taylor Sturm
Posting on Brendan Fogarty's behalf:

Brendan just had a White-winged Dove fly in to the same area in which he was
viewing a Bay-breasted Warbler amongst other warblers; on the fisherman's road
near the coast guard station at Jones Beach SP. From what I understand he is
trying to relocate the bird at the moment.

Good birding.

[nysbirds-l] Bicknells Thrush at North Mt Loretto Woods on Staten Island.

Was by the sw corner of Massapequa Lake this morning and saw a Blackburnian

trip to Jones Beach and saw the typical birds for this spot: Osprey, lots
of Baltimore Orioles and Yellow Warblers, Black and White Warbler, Northern
Parula, Warbling Vireo, Red Eye Vireo. Heard but did not see a Black
Billed Cuckoo.

Good birding,

Just another reminder for those thinking of coming up on Sunday, that Rt 9
will be closed on May 15 until 1PM for to a bicycle race.

Happy spring birding!

Peter
