[nysbirds-l] Dickcissel at Georgica
There was a Dickcissel in a flock of Cowbirds and House Sparrows in the hedgerow of goldenrod and pokeweed across from house #24 (Pierson Rd.?) at the Georgica Assoc. this afternoon. A large movement of birds passed over between 10 and 11pm in the mist. Swainson's and Gray-cheeked Thrushes, Common Yellowthroats, Redstarts, Palms, Yellow-rumps, Blackpolls, Scarlet Tanager, Savannah, Chipping, White-throated and one exuberant Grasshopper Sparrow. [nysbirds-l] Suggestions for Birding Locations Near Oyster Bay, LI
I will be visiting Oyster Bay on Long Island and I hope to have a couple of opportunities to bird for up to 2 hours at a stretch in the early mornings. I will have a car. I might also head back home via Orient Point and the ferry. Any suggestions of areas to bird in the vicinity of Oyster Bay or perhaps on the way home would be much appreciated. Please reply offline. [nysbirds-l] Some Kissena Corridor Park Rarities Still Present
A quick stroll around Kissena Corridor Park in Queens this evening from 5 - 5:45 PM netted two of the previously seen "good" birds. The Blue Grosbeak was still there as was the Lark Sparrow. I was surprised, however, when a second Lark Sparrow joined the first! I managed to get pictures of them both together which will I will post on the blog some time tomorrow. All three birds were just east of the north-south paved path that is itself just east of the Community Garden. [nysbirds-l] NYSOA weekend and lost camera
Hello all, If anyone attending the NYSOA meeting at Sylvan Lake in Dutchess County this past weekend found a Canon PowerShot digital camera, please contact me offline. I lost it during or after the banquet on Saturday evening at the Circle Lodge. Birding highlights of the weekend for me, Andrew Baksh, Joan Quinlan, and Shai Mitra (and others who joined us birding both Saturday and Sunday) included Lincoln's Sparrows at Vassar Farm (1) and Stonykill Environmental Center (likely 2); Dickcissels (a flyover at Vassar and the one found earlier by others at SEC); a Philadelphia Vireo (thanks, Betsy!), and 11 species of warbler (Nashville, Yellow, Magnolia, BT Blue, Myrtle, BT Green, Prarie, Blackpoll, eastern and western Palms, Co. Yellowthroat, and Canada) at Vassar Farm. For us Long Islanders, the Pileated Woodpecker at Vassar was also a real treat. Thanks to Maury Lacher and Maha of the Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club, leaders of the Vassar Farm field trip, and Mike (studying/working at Vassar Farms) for introducing us to and educating us about this wonderful spot.
