Sunday 1/6 was not great weather, but headed out with Jim Horn, HM bateman and
Alec Humann for Bohemian Waxwings in Newfane (Lake Rd between the Christian
Camp and the Water Treatment Plant - on the south side of the road). Alec had
once upon arrival and Jim was able to find another among the
Sam Janazzo and I watched a rough legged hawk along Meadowbrook Pk'way this
afternoon about 1:30 seeing it twice. Once about 1 1/2 miles North of Loop
Pk'way and the second time just North of Loop on the Meadowbrook. I also
saw about 14 monk parakeets at Seamons Neck Park in Seaford. They

Here are the highlights:
Greater White-fronted Goose-6 -- Hook Pond on the north side lawns
Common Merganser-8 - Hook Pond
Wilson's Snipe-1 - David's Lane Nature Preserve
Glaucous Gull-1 (1st Winter) - Hook Pond, among gull
I didnt think these were such a big deal, but ebird seems to think these two
birds are rarities for this time of year in NYC.
I found a house wren at Kissena park Corridor foraging with a flock of Juncos
and Goldfinches. Probably the same flock that has orange crowned warbler in
it. Didnt

Bittern continues at location previously reported by Mike Scheibel; north side
of road in front of #28 Dune Road, just east of Triton Lane and west of Tiana
Pavilion, Southampton.

Having missed a better than silhouette view of WW Crossbills at Montauk
Point for visiting birder Carlos Sanchez, we went to Heckscher stpk in
western suffolk county yesterday. The large flock of both Red and
White-winged Crossbills remain in the pines between fields 7 & 8.
The Lapland
At the start of an otherwise uneventful walk through the Ramble at
about 9:15am, I saw a crow high in a tree just SE of Maintenance.
Thought nothing of it until, as I was exiting the meadow, I heard a
very nasal "ung! ung!". I turned around and the crow gave another
quick pair of adenoidal caws
The program is correct as stated for Tues Jan 8:

With the cluster of rare waterfowl being seen in this location, and the
indication that at least the Pochard is an escapee it would be good to know
what other birds, if any, the owner of the Pochard might have lost. In my
mind, the cluster of rare and attractive waterfowl with a known escapee

reported by Derek Rogers. It had been on and off at Hard's Lake of
Southaven County Park. Today I observed the bird from another Suffolk
County Park, Prosser Pines, which is near the headwaters of Hard's
Lake/Carman's River on
The warbler at backstop 42 on Randall's Island is the Western form of Palm
Warbler not an Orange-crowned Warbler as I reported. Apologies for the
confusion.

Tom, Jessie and I received some secondhand communications from Connecticut
that someone in New York did lose a Common Pochard that fits this
description.
We also solicited some feedback from the BTO (British Trust for
Ornithology) on the band given the organizations expertise and

were mobbing something. It turned out to be a Long-eared Owl that was sitting
on the window sill of the school. There were also two Red-shouldered Hawks
mobbing the owl as well. The owl stuck around for several

Napeague. The bird is on Hicks Island visible from the boat ramp at Napeague.
Also present were 30 Purple Sandpipers at East Hampton main beach. They were
