[nysbirds-l] molting Gadwall photo

2013-08-26 Thread Ardith Bondi
For anyone who hasn't had a good view of an extensive summer wing molt
in a Gadwall, I happened to capture this in Central Park on the
Reservoir last week. I have known about this, but haven't had a duck
flap nicely right in front of my camera showing all the pin feathers.
Talk about a "sitting duck"

[nysbirds-l] Nickerson Beach - Royal and Gull-Billed Terns

2013-08-26 Thread Rob Longiaru
Today at around Noon, while scanning the colonies I noticed 2 Royal Terns
loafing in front of the old Skimmer colony (west side of Nickerson), as well as
Two Gull-billed Terns overhead.

The Gull-Billed Terns have been here on the regular, but it was my first
sighting of Royals since Spring.

The Black Skimmers had a late hatch this year, and have many small chicks
within the colony, with a small amount of fledged juveniles in the area as
well.

Happy Birding!
