[nysbirds-l] "Cheaper by the dozen" !

2014-02-20 Thread robert adamo
Thursday afternoon, armed with my new camera, I headed east toward Orient,
in the hope of "zooming in" on a Snowy Owl ! Although I couldn't find
either of the 2 birds that have been seen there fairly regularly since the
beginning of the season, I did get some nice "close-ups" of a very
cooperative Red-tailed Hawk. I first saw it resting atop a utility pole on
the n/s/o Main Rd., Orient. After parking on the s/s (about a pole away)
and taking a few shots from the car, I then got out and started taking
photos as I walked closer to the hawk, stopping every 10', or so. This kept
up until I found myself directly opposite the pole/bird, and completely
surprised that the usually wary hawk hadn't flown off !

The rest of the trip was mostly a testimonial to how well the Red-tail
Hawk is doing (12, in total). There were 4 each in Riverhead &
Orient, plus 4 more in-between. Also, in both towns, there was a pair
perched on the same branch, right next to each other...must be that time of
year !

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon - Maybe not so

2014-02-20 Thread richard guthrie
After some further review of the reported "Gyrfalcon" at the Shawangunk
Grasslands from Feb. 16th, maybe the bird is not a Gyrfalcon after all.

The photos were not all that clear and suggest immature Red-shouldered Hawk
as well.

Without further sightings or better evidence, prospective "chasers" might
stand down for now.

Sorry,

Harry Taylor, just called to report a Rough-legged Hawk sitting in a tree

Please refer to previous reports for further details on the bird. Good
luck if you try for it.

[nysbirds-l] Essex - Charlotte Ferry across Lake Champlain

2014-02-20 Thread Joan Collins
Just in case anyone is headed toward the Essex - Charlotte Ferry across Lake
Champlain, I must have had a dyslexic moment and reversed the schedule in my
post yesterday! The ferry runs back and forth - on the half hour beginning
at 7:30 a.m. on the NY side and at the top of the hour on the VT side
beginning at 7 a.m. The last ferry leaves VT at 5 p.m. and NY at 5:30 p.m.
If you miss the ferry, you can simply head south and drive across the lake
on the Champlain Bridge at Crown Point.

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon - Maybe not so

2014-02-20 Thread richard guthrie
After some further review of the reported Gyrfalcon at the Shawangunk
Grasslands from Feb. 16th, maybe the bird is not a Gyrfalcon after all.

The photos were not all that clear and suggest immature Red-shouldered Hawk
as well.

Without further sightings or better evidence, prospective chasers might
stand down for now.

Sorry,

[nysbirds-l] Cheaper by the dozen !

2014-02-20 Thread robert adamo
Thursday afternoon, armed with my new camera, I headed east toward Orient,
in the hope of zooming in on a Snowy Owl ! Although I couldn't find
either of the 2 birds that have been seen there fairly regularly since the
beginning of the season, I did get some nice close-ups of a very
cooperative Red-tailed Hawk.

There were 4 each in Riverhead
Orient, plus 4 more in-between. Also, in both towns, there was a pair
perched on the same branch, right next to each other...must be that time of
year !

Cheers,
Bob
