[nysbirds-l] Glossy Ibis - east Patchogue

2015-06-09 Thread leormand
On my morning run along Roe avenue I saw a glossy ibis flying. This evening
while biking around Swan River Preserve (just south of Swan Lake - about 1.5
miles north of where I saw the glossy this morning) I observed a glossy ibis
feeding in the ponds. There were also several geese family and a large swan
family - unfortunate side effects of creating this new habitat.

[nysbirds-l] Jilt by Stilt, x 2

2015-06-09 Thread robert adamo
Last Saturday I tried for the Black-necked Stilt (for all of about 15
minutes) at the Smith's Point Marina, on my way west to watch grandson # 3
play in a CYO basketball game...his team succeeded, mine didn't ! Today I
tried again for the bird, with the same results, except I had a few more
species to show for this lengthier visit !

By walking up the west wall of the impoundment, you can see most of the
marsh (w/o the entrance road) where Mike Scheibel first found it. While not
finding the Stilt, I did manage to find 1, of the 2, Little Blue Herons
reported by Angus Wilson. The impoundment itself, while not covered in
water, has several areas of standing water which yielded: a pair of
Gadwalls, 2 pairs of Mallards, a Willet, and 14 Least Sandpipers, that
landed and started to feed.

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Nickerson: One good tern deserves another, and five more

2015-06-09 Thread Tim Healy
Got down to Nickerson Beach at about 12:50 chasing this morning's reports. Over
the course of the afternoon I picked up seven species of tern: Black (2),
Roseate (5), Royal (1), Gull-billed (1), Forster's (2), Least (~40) and Common
(hundreds). Didn't see an Arctic among the birds encountered, though I paid
special attention to the 1st summer types. Can't complain...a seven tern day is
pretty great for Nassau! Also saw my first oystercatcher chicks of the season
and a Piping Plover performing a distraction display for a passing
oystercatcher.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Plateau Mountain Breeding Bird Survey

2015-06-09 Thread Steve M. Chorvas
Plateau Mountain, Greene County
Wednesday, 03 June and Saturday, 06 June 2015

Last week I conducted two annual breeding bird surveys on the summit of
Plateau Mountain for the Vermont Center for Ecostudies Mountain
Birdwatch program. The first survey covers the southeastern half of the
two-mile long summit plateau, the second survey starts near Orchard
Ledge and extends out over the northwestern half. The survey starts
before sunrise and utilizes six 20-minute point counts/survey to
document the presence of Bicknell's Thrush and seven additional target
species that breed in the high-elevation coniferous forest of the
Catskill Mountains.

Weather conditions this year were not as cooperative in comparison to
the past 15 years during the first survey, and deteriorated to
borderline acceptable during the second effort. Temperatures were
pleasantly cold on 03 June (44° F) with fog and a persistent light
breeze, followed by warmer temperatures (55° F), more fog, a persistent
drizzle, and considerably more wind on 06 June.

The list below represents bird species encountered on the mountain over
the two-day period, including the early morning ascent in darkness,
survey period, post-count at high elevation in principally coniferous
forest, late morning descent into lower elevation deciduous habitat, and
a short walk along the base of Plateau Mountain in Stony Clove. Most of
the species and individuals were first encountered on 03 June. Only
when a total number was greater on the subsequent survey did I add the
difference to the adjusted two-day compilation to avoid potential
duplication.

Overall, diversity was about average but individuals were down for most
species (some considerably). For comparative purposes, I included this
year's tally in parentheses (), followed by last year's numbers in
brackets []. Weather conditions may have been a factor, and I did not
linger on the mountain post-survey for as long as I typically do, but
during my time on the mountain there clearly seemed to be far fewer
singing birds this year.

Plateau Mountain Bird Species List (2015) and [2014]

Peregrine Falcon (0) [2]
Barred Owl (1 vocalizing on the ascent) [4]
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (0) [4]
Hairy Woodpecker (1) [1]
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher (5) [23]
Eastern Wood-Pewee (0) [1]
Blue-headed Vireo (0) [1]
Red-eyed Vireo (18) [2]
Blue Jay (0) [2]
Common Raven (3) [5]
Black-capped Chickadee (2) [0]
Red-breasted Nuthatch (5) [14]
Brown Creeper (2) [1]
Winter Wren (10) [18]
Golden-crowned Kinglet (8) [15]
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (0) [2]
Bicknell's Thrush (12) [26]
Swainson's Thrush (15) [20]
Hermit Thrush (1) [3]
Cedar Waxwing (3+ heard only flyovers, in three locations) [4]
Magnolia Warbler (10) [20]
Black-throated Blue Warbler (11) [5]
Yellow-rumped Warbler (18) [16]
Black-throated Green Warbler (7) [6]
Blackburnian Warbler (6) [10]
Blackpoll Warbler (16) [26]
Black-and-white Warbler (1) [3]
American Redstart (1) [4]
Ovenbird (3) [2]
Mourning Warbler (3 singing on territory) [9]
Canada Warbler (0) [5]
Scarlet Tanager (1) [2]
White-throated Sparrow (3) [15]
Dark-eyed Junco (5) [10]
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (1) [2]
Indigo Bunting (2) [2]
Purple Finch (5) [10]

I did not detect Peregrine Falcons along the steep cliffs of Stony
Clove, or the presence of Northern Saw-whet Owl or Ruby-crowned Kinglet
up on the mountain this year. The large synchronized flight of
thousands of small non-descript moths that I have encountered in some
past years flying at lower elevations were non-existent this year.
Several (5+) Pepper and Salt Skippers (butterflies) were present in
fresh condition along Stony Clove, and an old (2014) Mourning Cloak in
perhaps the final hours of her life was observed imbibing minerals
and/or moisture on wet soil, then depositing a cluster of eggs on a
willow twig.

[nysbirds-l] Charging at Nickerson Beach - Clarfication

2015-06-09 Thread Peter Post
I just called the office at Nickerson Beach and they gave me a
different story than the persons I spoke to who were actually
collecting the entrance fee last weekend.

The official story is:
They are not yet charging during the week until after Father's Day.
Weekend hours (including Friday) are 9-5, until after Father's Day,
even though the staff collecting the entrance fee stopped at 4:00.
After Father's Day they will stop charging at 6:00 pm every day of
the week..

BTW. The entrance fee is $30.00 for non-residents.

[nysbirds-l] Charging at Nickerson Beach

2015-06-09 Thread Peter Post

They currently charge between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. The
schedule changes on Father's Day. The staff doesn't yet know what the
new schedule will be. In the past they started charging at 8:30 am.
The hours they stopped charging have varied from after 5:00 pm to
after 6:00 pm, depending on the year and day of the week.

[nysbirds-l] Nickerson Beach

2015-06-09 Thread syschiff
Nickerson Beach 9 July

A group of us had a productive morning for terns. COMMON, ROSEATE, GULL-BILLED,
BLACK and ROYAL. Also, there were a number of first summer Common Terns, quite
rare and interesting to view.

In addition, a first year tern with short legs that hinted at ARCTIC TERN was
on the beach. This one was photographed from a great distance and is under
review before seeking advice.

FYI. They have not started charging to visit Nickerson Beach during the week,
so it's free (probably till July 4th. Don't have the weekend schedule)

Re: [nysbirds-l] Terns at Nickerson Beach

2015-06-09 Thread Felipe Pimentel
You can go after 5PM and at that time they don’t charge parking fees. I was
there yesterday around 5PM and it was pretty windy and most of the terns were
concentrated on the left side of the beach. You should park near the building
were the bathrooms are, you walk towards the beach and turn left and you will
find the terns (by the hundreds) sitting on the sand, flying around or feeding
(fishing) in on the shore. Yesterday, there was a Black tern and several other
species other than the Common terns that are nesting on the dunes.

In addition to these fine finds for Nassau County, an adult Arctic Tern was

Although this species is becoming more familiar to NYS birders, it is
nevertheless still an excellent find anywhere in the state and can be very

RE: [nysbirds-l] Terns at Nickerson Beach

2015-06-09 Thread Shaibal Mitra
In addition to these fine finds for Nassau County, an adult Arctic Tern was
identified and photographed yesterday (8 June) at Nickerson by Bobby Kurtz and
Joe Viglietta.

Although this species is becoming more familiar to NYS birders, it is
nevertheless still an excellent find anywhere in the state and can be very
challenging to identify. Photographs are still very much desired in support of
all reports. With his permission, two of Joe's photos can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Nickerson Beach

2015-06-09 Thread syschiff
Nickerson Beach 9 July

A group of us had a productive morning for terns. COMMON, ROSEATE, GULL-BILLED,
BLACK and ROYAL. Also, there were a number of first summer Common Terns, quite
rare and interesting to view.

In addition, a first year tern with short legs that hinted at ARCTIC TERN was
on the beach. This one was photographed from a great distance and is under
review before seeking advice.

FYI. They have not started charging to visit Nickerson Beach during the week,
so it's free (probably till July 4th. Don't have the weekend schedule)

[nysbirds-l] Plateau Mountain Breeding Bird Survey

2015-06-09 Thread Steve M. Chorvas
Plateau Mountain, Greene County
Wednesday, 03 June and Saturday, 06 June 2015

Last week I conducted two annual breeding bird surveys on the summit of
Plateau Mountain for the Vermont Center for Ecostudies Mountain
Birdwatch program. The first survey covers the southeastern half of the
two-mile long summit plateau, the second survey starts near Orchard
Ledge and extends out over the northwestern half. The survey starts
before sunrise and utilizes six 20-minute point counts/survey to
document the presence of Bicknell's Thrush and seven additional target
species that breed in the high-elevation coniferous forest of the
Catskill Mountains.

Weather conditions this year were not as cooperative in comparison to
the past 15 years during the first survey, and deteriorated to
borderline acceptable during the second effort. Temperatures were
pleasantly cold on 03 June (44° F) with fog and a persistent light
breeze, followed by warmer temperatures (55° F), more fog, a persistent
drizzle, and considerably more wind on 06 June.

The list below represents bird species encountered on the mountain over
the two-day period, including the early morning ascent in darkness,
survey period, post-count at high elevation in principally coniferous
forest, late morning descent into lower elevation deciduous habitat, and
a short walk along the base of Plateau Mountain in Stony Clove. Most of
the species and individuals were first encountered on 03 June. Only
when a total number was greater on the subsequent survey did I add the
difference to the adjusted two-day compilation to avoid potential
duplication.

Overall, diversity was about average but individuals were down for most
species (some considerably). For comparative purposes, I included this
year's tally in parentheses (), followed by last year's numbers in
brackets []. Weather conditions may have been a factor, and I did not
linger on the mountain post-survey for as long as I typically do, but
during my time on the mountain there clearly seemed to be far fewer
singing birds this year.

Plateau Mountain Bird Species List (2015) and [2014]

Peregrine Falcon (0) [2]
Barred Owl (1 vocalizing on the ascent) [4]
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (0) [4]
Hairy Woodpecker (1) [1]
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher (5) [23]
Eastern Wood-Pewee (0) [1]
Blue-headed Vireo (0) [1]
Red-eyed Vireo (18) [2]
Blue Jay (0) [2]
Common Raven (3) [5]
Black-capped Chickadee (2) [0]
Red-breasted Nuthatch (5) [14]
Brown Creeper (2) [1]
Winter Wren (10) [18]
Golden-crowned Kinglet (8) [15]
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (0) [2]
Bicknell's Thrush (12) [26]
Swainson's Thrush (15) [20]
Hermit Thrush (1) [3]
Cedar Waxwing (3+ heard only flyovers, in three locations) [4]
Magnolia Warbler (10) [20]
Black-throated Blue Warbler (11) [5]
Yellow-rumped Warbler (18) [16]
Black-throated Green Warbler (7) [6]
Blackburnian Warbler (6) [10]
Blackpoll Warbler (16) [26]
Black-and-white Warbler (1) [3]
American Redstart (1) [4]
Ovenbird (3) [2]
Mourning Warbler (3 singing on territory) [9]
Canada Warbler (0) [5]
Scarlet Tanager (1) [2]
White-throated Sparrow (3) [15]
Dark-eyed Junco (5) [10]
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (1) [2]
Indigo Bunting (2) [2]
Purple Finch (5) [10]

I did not detect Peregrine Falcons along the steep cliffs of Stony
Clove, or the presence of Northern Saw-whet Owl or Ruby-crowned Kinglet
up on the mountain this year. The large synchronized flight of
thousands of small non-descript moths that I have encountered in some
past years flying at lower elevations were non-existent this year.
Several (5+) Pepper and Salt Skippers (butterflies) were present in
fresh condition along Stony Clove, and an old (2014) Mourning Cloak in
perhaps the final hours of her life was observed imbibing minerals
and/or moisture on wet soil, then depositing a cluster of eggs on a
willow twig.

Cheers,
Bob

Yesterday morning I walked from the AT at Canopus Lake (parking on Rte. 301
about 1 mi. West of Taconic) to Beaver Pond on the Blue Trail which includes
a stretch I maintain for NY/NJ Trail Conference, and combined the maintenance
w Putnam County June breeding bird survey. Warblers included multiples of
chestnut sided, prairie, yellow, redstart, black throated blue and ovenbird,
the latter almost too numerous to count, also singles of worm eating, black
throated green and Lo. waterthrush. Numerous Veery and wood thrush and a few
hermit as well. Multiple rose breasted grosbeak, including one singing wide
open beautifully backlit for at least five minutes, scarlet tanager, and
pairs of great crested fly, kingbird and raven. At least 3 pileated WP.
Misses were both cuckoo and ruffed grouse which definitely breeds off the
 blue trail.
If you don't want to wait for fall migration several hours beginning early am
at various Fahnestock spots may net 15 warbler species all on territory --
there's lots of excellent trails to walk/hike.
