Hi Andrew: If you don't mind, I am going to print a screenshot of your email in the QCBC newsletter as an update about the West Pond. Thank you. That is the text message I received while I was at the north end of the East Pond with a small group who stayed with me. While there is no timeline or details associated with her announcement, it has to be seen as a positive development that we at least have on RECORD, someone from National Park Service committing to closing the breach. l want to also add that I am grateful that Lloyd, Don and Kevin continue to organize this event which is so much needed at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. I hope they continue to do so for many years to come. If you missed the event yesterday, think about attending next year. [nysbirds-l] Central Park, NyS - Saturday September 5, 2015
Central Park, NYC Saturday September 5, 2015 OBS: R. DeCandido, D. Allen, m.ob. and some excellent birders on the walk today which made life easy for Bob & I. Today we had two bird walks, one starting at 7:30 am and another starting at 9:00am with most of the 7:30 birders continuing. This is the combined list: Green Heron – (DA before 9 am walk) Red-tailed Hawk Ruby-throated Hummingbird Downy Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Northern Flicker American Kestrel Peregrine Falcon Great Crested Flycatcher – 2 together Eastern Kingbird Warbling Vireo Red-eyed Vireo Black-capped Chickadee White-breasted Nuthatch Carolina Wren Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Veery Wood Thrush Gray Catbird Ovenbird Northern Waterthrush Blue-winged Warbler Black-and-white Warbler Common Yellowthroat American Redstart Northern Parula Magnolia Warbler Yellow Warbler Chestnut-sided Warbler Baltimore Oriole Miriam Rakowski reported a Rose-breasted Grosbeak at the Upper Lobe. The Green Heron at Turtle Pond was a hatch-year bird. During the ten minutes that I watched it fishing, it made five attempts and caught four fish, an 80% success rate- not bad for a youngster on a duckweed-covered pond. Bob tells me the fish were bluegills. [nysbirds-l] 6 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS--Riverhead sod fields (Suffolk)
Knowing that I would be out in the Eastport/Riverhead area for non-birding reasons, I made sure to bring my scope in order to look for grasspipers on the sod fields as soon as my obligations were done. The Eastport fields (Eastport Manor Rd. and Rte 51) yielded only a few Killdeer combined, so it was on to Riverhead. There, I started my search on the fields bordered by Doctor's Path, Northville Tpke, Rte. 105, and Sound Avenue. My vantage point was the firefighter training facility accessed from Northville Tpke, west of 105. I'd been scoping for barely 5 minutes when I spotted 6 birds foraging on a fallow field off to the west--BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS all. They were still there when I left at ~3:45. A subsequent check of the Osborn Ave. field turned up no further grasspipers of any kind. [nysbirds-l] Oceanside
Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside 5 September Of interest this morning was a CLAPPER RAIL that flew onto the marsh edge and disappeared into the spartina. Just happened to be in the right place at the right time, The other Marsh denizen was an adult SALTMARSH SPARROW. This bird is unbanded and has been around for a few days. It's probably is a migrant, since as part of the ongoing field study, all the marsh sparrows and their young on the property have (hopefully) been banded, tested.and measured. The residents sparrows as well as the breeding WILLETS should all be mostly gone by now. Only a single adult Willet was seen this morning.
