Re:[nysbirds-l] Slightly off topic - AMKE - Buster stolen - UPDATE Buster Returned

2016-12-25 Thread Susan Herbst
Volunteers for Wildlife posted on their face book page a little more than an
hour ago that Buster was returned to their facility in Locust Valley. He is
unharmed, but HUNGRY!
As promised, no further information about who or why he was taken is available.
Understandably everyone is pretty happy.
Toe see a video of Buster chowing down as he complains, go to

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose yes

2016-12-25 Thread Andrew Block
I went back at around 4:45pm and was at the VCP Parade Grounds to about 5pm and
the Pink-footed Goose was there and easy to see.  The flock was smaller than
this am and the Snow Goose was gone, but the Pink-footed was there, nice.  A
beautiful bird.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose yes, VCP Bronx Co. NYC 12/25

2016-12-25 Thread Thomas Fiore

Sunday, Christmas Day, 25 December 2016

As noted to this list, the Pink-footed Goose was present with a nearby
Snow Goose, & perhaps 500++ Canada Geese as well as a brief look at
what may have been a Richardson's Cackling Goose, all at the north-
most end of the Van Cortlandt Park Parade Grounds, as of 4:15 & just
afterwards (to sunset) in the west Bronx (NYC) - the geese perhaps
staying where it was not as likely they'd be harassed by non-birders
who, as noted, sometimes do intentionally run after or set dogs after
the geese at this site, for no good reasons; it happens - even though
by far the majority of park users do not behave in these ways towards
wildlife at that park & at the least, the geese are fairly cautious
about what is happening in their feeding areas! Photos of the geese
were again obtained in end-of day sun.

Peace - & good birding,
Tom Fiore

[nysbirds-l] Continuing birds at Kissena and Plandome

2016-12-25 Thread Peter Reisfeld
Having done the Christmas bird count with Jeff Ritter last week, I decided to
revisit the Kissena Park on Christmas day to see what was still around. While
numbers were down a bit from last week, the Red-headed woodpecker continues to
be an active presence, and can heard loudly rattling on the western side of the
hill south of the lake.

While looking for the winter wren seen last week at Eric Miller’s secret
warbler spot north of the golf course, I was surprised to find a house wren, a
pretty rare bird for late December. (And one which would have been a nice
addition to the count last week. Oh well...)

Then on my way home I stopped at the parking area north of the Plandome train
station looking for the yellow-breasted chat. Having dipped on Thursday and
not heard any further reports, I didn’t expect much. But when I arrived, he was
sitting on top of a brush pile on the left of the path near the 5 door garage.
And in typical chat fashion, he disappeared before I could take a photo.

Good winter birding to all,

Peter

[nysbirds-l] Yes- Pink-footed Goose at Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx

2016-12-25 Thread Jared Cole
Pink-footed Goose and Snow Goose present among many Canada Geese on the
northern athletic fields at the Parade Grounds of Van Cortlandt Park,
Bronx, NY, observed from 3:15-4:10pm on 12/25/2016.

We observed at least two different people actively harassing the geese
flocks. One person was running at them to get then to fly while his friend
filmed it. Yikes.

Hopefully the geese are still present tomorrow and are treated respectfully
beyond!

I went this morning from about 8:45am to around 10:30am to the Van Cortlandt
Park Parade Grounds and Lake area looking for the recently found geese.  The
2-300 Canada Geese were on the fields but only the imm. white phase Snow Goose
was there.  I got excellent looks at all the geese from several angles and in
flight (some idiot and her rat dog kept harassing them) and didn't see anything
different other than the Snow Goose.  I also had 2 juv. Cooper's Hawks, 2
Hooded Mergansers, many Mallards, 7 Red-winged Blackbirds, 7 Ruddy Ducks, 15+
Northern Shovelers, 1 Great Blue Heron, and the usual winter forest birds.
