[nysbirds-l] Cold spring harbor roseate spoonbill county location

2021-07-25 Thread Pat Aitken
To many birders’ great delight, another Roseate Spoonbill appeared in Cold
Spring Harbor on Long Island today. This presents a wonderful opportunity
for birders with the time and patience to get the bird in both Nassau and
Suffolk Counties, as the bird was moving back and forth along the
shorelines. I’ve attached a screen shot of the county boundaries. The
brown lines are the land based boundary, the purple is the extension out
into the water.

If you want to check the map yourself, it can be found at
lodging.dos.my.gov/#/map

If you go tomorrow, please be careful with parking. Route 25a is a very
busy road.

[nysbirds-l] Possible Wood Stork, Ulster County

2021-07-25 Thread Joshua Malbin
At about 3 pm today my wife saw a flying bird that, from her description,
sounded to me a lot like a Wood Stork. She was at Kelder’s Farm in
Kerhonkson, looking south over Rondout Creek. No idea where near there
might be habitat worth checking, but thought I would pass it along.

RE: [nysbirds-l] 2(!) Roseate Spoonbill - Nassau County 7/25

2021-07-25 Thread rcech
I know it’s a thrill to see all of the spoonbills in these parts. But for the
birds, it seems to be connected to habitat degradation ‘back home.’ Good news?
Spoonbills may be more ready and able to move around and adapt than some other
birds in response to stress conditions. Or so the writer below says.

Hi all,

Two troublesome spoonbills turned up today in Nassau. Check eBire for one seen
by Russ and Lifang in Cold Spring Harbor at the Saint John's Pond outflow. It
was seen very briefly at 9:30 but not again since. Best vantage on the harbor
is from the boat ramps and overlooks on the east side of the harbor in Suffolk
County, the west side is the private Cold Spring Habor lab.

I am out with Stéphane Perrault and Tim Healy and we just came across another
spoonbill on East Meadow Island just west of Masone Beach in Island Park. It is
feeding along the south edge of the island near some egrets. Masone Beach would
be a good vantage point but as I understand it, it is for people living in the
Village of Island Park only, so I am not aware of any obvious access except by
personal boat.

Our spoonbill is foraging now at 2:13 here (40.6105228, -73.6578647)

Best,

Brendan Fogarty

[nysbirds-l] Swallow-tailed Kite - Woodbury

2021-07-25 Thread Michael Z
Hello all,
Robert Taylor just spotted a Swallow-tailed Kite on South Woods Road just
north of Butera's Restaurant in Woodbury, NY (Nassau County). The bird
seemed to be flying north, but it flew over the tree line and out of our
site. Went to Stillwell Woods to try and relocate but no luck. But if you
are in the area of the spoonbill, keep your eyes open.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Roseate Spoonbill Wappingers Falls, Dutchess Co.

2021-07-25 Thread Donna Schulman
There are two eBird reports (with photos) of a Roseate Spoonbill seen for a
minute this morning in Laurel Hollow, Nassau County, close to the Suffolk
County border. Let's hope it can be relocated!

By my count, this is the 6th NYS Spoonbill for the summer, if we assume the
Wallkill and Wappingers Falls/Poughkeepsie birds are two different birds.

BEGIN TAPE

Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for *Friday, July 23rd 2021*
at 11pm. The highlights of today's tape are BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK,
SANDHILL CRANE, WHITE-FACED IBIS, BROWN PELICAN, AMERICAN AVOCET and other
shorebirds, BLUE GROSBEAK, DICKCISSEL and more.

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge's single BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK continues
on the East Pond where it has been seen usually in the Cove roosting with
other waterfowl on the southwest side of the pond as viewed from the south
end. Be careful as you navigate the edges of the pond especially if
venturing up to the Raunt or beyond. WHITE-FACED IBIS has, at least through
Wednesday, been mostly now up at the north end of the pond. The big numbers
and variety of shorebirds, though, are generally well dispersed along the
pond's edges. These recently included 1 or 2 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 31
STILT SANDPIPERS, a WESTERN and up to 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and decent
totals for the more expected species. Also noted on the East Pond this week
were up to 3 GULL-BILLED TERNS and a CASPIAN TERN last Sunday.

The SANDHILL CRANE present on the Dyker Beach Golf Course in Brooklyn on
the 15th was likely the one also seen out at the tip of Breezy Point early
last Saturday.

A BROWN PELICAN was spotted off Miller Field Beach on Staten Island last
Sunday.

AMERICAN AVOCET, found at Nickerson Beach last Sunday, was still present
today in the rain pools west of the main tern colony. Remember there is a
fee to enter Nickerson if you arrive after the booths open up.

A WHIMBREL was at Breezy Point Tuesday and Wednesday where this week's high
count of 59 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS took place today and a CASPIAN TERN
appeared at Plumb Beach Monday.

A few WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS have been seen from shore along the coast
recently but pelagics have been sparse.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was still at Rockefeller State Park Preserve in
Westchester last Saturday and please remember to use utmost caution so as
not to disturb such sensitive species as the BLUE GROSBEAKS using the
wonderful Calverton Grasslands or the DICKCISSELS attempting to nest on the
Croton Point Park landfill.

There were sightings of single ROSEATE SPOONBILLS in the Orange County
Black Dirt Region at Liberty Loop on the 14th and yesterday to early this
morning at Wappinger's Falls in Dutchess County and hopefully it will be
soon that one appears in the NYC region.

To phone in reports, call Tom Burke at (914) 967-4922.

This service is sponsored by the Linnaean Society of New York and the
National Audubon Society. Thank you for calling.
