[nysbirds-l] Central Park Kentucky Warbler

The bird was intermittently seen throughout the day. A saw it at 6:45 at the
bottom of the Shakespeare Garden, just north of the Swedish Cottage.

Melissa Berube found this bird in the SE lawn border of Bryant Park and brought
me over to see it. I had never seen a Sora and was not able to confirm her ID,
but I tweeted the sighting and David Barrett and Matt L came by and were able
to see and ID it. I got some photos in the unfortunately poor light, and I've
put a selection of them at

Skimmers also occur fairly regularly in the Meadowlands and along the
Hackensack River in New Jersey during the summer, so they're by no means

We were told today by two people in the park who seemed to have good
information that the work will be done in sections. So the entire Loch will
not, in fact, be inaccessible—and the situation may not be so dire after all.
Apologies for the apparent misinformation.

At Richard DeKorte Park, a few minutes over the GW in Bergen County, NJ, Paul
Citrin, Gerry McGee and I saw three Least Bitterns this morning, among other
species.
Seeing one very cooperative Least Bittern was great, seeing three at different
locations along the marsh was unusual, for sure.

Re:[nysbirds-l] [ebirdsnyc] Inwood Hill Pk Empid (Manhattan) - notes from Saturday's sighting

2016-12-11 Thread Goldstein, Gina
If you walk north before going west you can avoid the steps/big hill. I think
the street is 218, but just keep going north til you see no stairs. A slight
detour only.

My eBird checklist is here:

A warning to those taking the #1 train to 215th St: if you continue on 215th to
walk west into the park, you'll be walking up 7 flights of stone steps to get
there, so be prepared! Of course you'll get your reward on the way back when
it's all downhill. There may be another way to get there that avoids the
steep incline, but maybe others can chime in on this.

I checked my Fitbit after arriving home, and it showed that I walked the
equivalent of 32 flights of stairs (which included those in and out of the
subway). I would say that the trip accounted for at least 26 of those flights,
so it was a good workout.

[nysbirds-l] Fort Tryon Park

2017-05-03 Thread Goldstein, Gina
For the record, birding in Fort Tryon Park and environs this morning was really
excellent. Inside the park: yellow, black-throated blue, black-throated green,
b, and Parula warblers, rose-breasted grosbeak, indigo bunting, scarlet
tanager (m), Eastern kingbird, Baltimore oriole, warbling vireo, and a lot of
swifts around a termite hatch. (Cape May and Tennessee warblers were reported
by others.) In Cabrini Woods (along Cabrini Blvd, between 190th St. and the
entrance to the park), were chestnut-sided and yellow-throated warbler, plus
more Parulas and another Eastern kingbird.

I didn't know Ft Tryon ever got this birdy, but maybe I've never gone in at the
right time before today.

RE:[nysbirds-l] [ebirdsnyc] Central Park Loch inaccessible during migration

2016-04-23 Thread Goldstein Gina

Skimmers also occur fairly regularly in the Meadowlands and along the
Hackensack River in New Jersey during the summer, so they're by no means
restricted to beaches.

Last night while walking in Prospect Park around 10:30pm, I was surprised to

lake near the new Lakeside Center, with their distinctive skimming motion.
There were 8 or 9 in the flock. Beautiful birds! I didn't know they frequented
fresh water away from beaches... They're an unusual sight even in the East
River.

Nocturnal perambulations reveal many wonders!

We just found a prothonotary warbler on the east side of duck island in
Brooklyn's prospect Park on the BBC spring migration walk. This is the south
east corner of prospect lake near the lefrak skating rink.
