[nysbirds-l] Steve N.Howell's "What exactly is a field notebook"

2022-11-10 Thread Juan Salas
Hello, I hope this is an acceptable message for this forum.
I am trying to find Steve N.Howell's 5 part series "What exactly is a field
notebook", published in the ABA's Eyrie in 2015, starting on July 26. When
I try to open the links mentioned in the review here:
https://blog.aba.org/2015/08/howell-on-field-notebooks-at-the-eyrie.html

the pages can't be found. I have written to the ABA's webmaster without
any luck.
Would someone have a copy of the entries?

Thank you.

[nysbirds-l] Aging the Henslow's Sparrow from Green-wood Cemetery in Brooklyn

2021-12-07 Thread Juan Salas
I am trying to get some feedback on the age of the bird seen and
photographed on December 5th and 6th.
After studying the photo I took yesterday of the open wing I believe it is
a HY bird in 1st PreBasic Molt, showing the Molt limit marking the
difference between fresh greater covers and old primary covers (Pyle, 1997).
You can see the photo in https://flic.kr/p/2mPcgxd
Looking forward to your comments.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Question about hybridization between Seaside Sparrow and Saltmarsh Sparrow.

2017-05-08 Thread Juan Salas
Shai, thank you for the photos. Variations within this species really run
along a wide spectrum.
The breast of the bird on photo P1030904 is almost like a Nelson's
Sparrow's. And yet there is no structural visible differences between the
LI birds photographed. We can safely say that the Seaside Sparrow (complex)
is not a ring species.

Shai, thank you for the photos. Variations within this species really run
along a wide spectrum.

LI birds photographed. We can safely say that the Seaside Sparrow (complex)

Re: [nysbirds-l] Question about hybridization between Seaside Sparrow and Saltmarsh Sparrow.

2017-04-28 Thread Juan Salas
Thank you for your fast reactions.
No need for consolation, Tom.
Angus, you're right, the light was less than perfect.
The bird is clearly a Seaside Sparrow, and I identified it as such, but
the ochre on the side of the neck, behind the eye stripe, is a feature that
does not show on any representation of the bird I have had access to
(although similar to a juvenile's plumage), and the belly is light.

Beadle and Rising mention on page 171 of their Sparrows of the United
States and Canada from 2002 an individual collected in Connecticut in what
seems like an isolated event.

Eric Salzman writing about the Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow in Bull's
Birds of New York State, Levine (ed.) 1998, 519, reports that "Although it
has hybridized with the Seaside Sparrow, the frequency of hybridization is
considered to be low (Grenlaw and Rising, 1994), and there are not recent
records from NY. The two species commonly inhabit the same marshes on LI,
often nesting within a few meters of each other (pers. obs.)"
I do not believe it is a frequent event, but it does happen.
In any case I am eager to learn more about the latest information on the
subject, and I thought today's sighting was a great excuse.
Any further comment would be welcome.
Thank you.

I have uploaded two photos of the bird here:

Good to know that it is staying around. I hope more people will be able to
see it.

This morning at 0945 on the southwestern corner of the ballfields, where
the trail that runs at the back of the fields joins the trail that starts
on Avenue U and 36th Street.
I am reporting here as it seems to be still the best way to let as many
people as possible about a rarity.

Yellow legged Herring Gull it is. I thank you all for the feedback. Angus

Shaibal Mitra's excellent pictures of a yellow legged Herring Gull seem to
show an even darker mantled individual.

I have uploaded a crop of the eyering here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/23604521@N00/16300143723/
Thank you for the feedback. I agree that the mantle is lighter than
expected for YLGU, and the eyering might not be fleshy (or red) enough for
YLGU.

Re:[nysbirds-l] [ebirdsnyc] Possible Yellow legged Gull at Plumb Beach 20150324

2015-03-24 Thread Juan Salas
I have uploaded a crop of the eyering here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/23604521@N00/16300143723/
Thank you for the feedback. I agree that the mantle is lighter than
expected for YLGU, and the eyering might not be fleshy (or red) enough for
YLGU.

Mantle color really quite variable and also hard to judge.
But I'm not really a gull person. Happy to stand corrected.

Good points Phil. A few more things in favor for are the the bill and
head which is very clean. I have not attempted to blow up any of the photos
to look more closely at the orbital ring.

The mantle though is where I am uncertain as it seems so pale.

Nevertheless my understanding of L. michahellis, while limited, is that
it'll have a red-orange eye orbital ring while your bird has a yellow or
 yellow-orange one.
 http://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/yellow-legged-gull shows this
 fairly well.
You'd probably want side-by-side shots with smithonianus Herring gulls to
highlight any structure differences (and, apropos Andrew's comment, mantle
shade which is really difficult to assess from isolated photos).

Back in 2004 Pete Shen found a yellow-legged Herring Gull at Jamaica
Bay. We posted the images on BIRDWG01 and the consensus was that this was
an odd (American) Herring Gull. I suspect the Plumb Beach bird might be
the adult alternate version of this anomaly but I'd be interested in
dissenters from this view since Yellow-legged is very rare in the USA.
My page hosting Pete's pictures is still up, at:

The bird, which appears to be an adult male, seems to be restricting its
foraging to a wooded area directly adjacent to the bridge known as The
Nethermead Arches along Center Drive. While we did see it once near the
steep ridge on the South side of the bridge, it seems to prefer the wooded
hillside just on the North side. If you are walking through the Ravine
towards the Nethermead Meadow, you will see a flight of stairs on your
right that leads towards Center Drive. At the top of the stairway is a yew
tree. He was observed feeding on the ground below that tree several times.
He also moves a short distance South-West of that spot, but only as far as
the footpath that ascends towards the Fallkill Falls. There are dozens of
robins in the area, but he doesn't seem to really associate with them and
sticks to feeding within the edges of the woods.

If you come by car, probably the most direct route is to park near
Prospect Park Southwest and 16th Street. Walk straight in at 16th and to
Center Drive. Continue walking until you reach the bridge.

 Good birding,

 Rob

[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Birds: Common Terns and Willets

2011-05-02 Thread Juan Salas
This morning one Common Tern fishing in front of the Saltmarsh Nature Center in
Marine Park while another Common Tern displayed for food from the shore. After
catching a small prey, the first bird fed the second one and then displayed
briefly before returning to work. A paired couple.
Four Willets sighted earlier near the same spot, one Oystercatcher and one
Greater Yellowlegs.
