Re: [nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Shorebirds and East Pond update...

2017-07-24 Thread Susan Elbin
Hi Andrew and all,
We just received notification from the Banding Lab and want to thank you
for reporting your resighting of the Glossy Ibis 1116-50056 (also known as
049).

In case others are curious: that bird was banded as a pre-fledged chick by
our team (NYC Audubon) on 17 June 2010 on Canarsie Pol, Jamaica Bay. This
bird is seven years old. How incredibly exciting -- especially considering
that you (Andrew) reported a Glossy Ibis from that same cohort last year at
the East Pond.

Good birding,

Susan

Re: [nysbirds-l] Tagged Great Egret

2016-05-09 Thread Susan Elbin
Thank you all much for reporting the tagged egret, wing tag YELLOW code:E13.

This is really important - an amazing - information.

This bird is now three years old. It was tagged on 8 July, 2013, on Elder's
Marsh in Jamaica Bay, New York City, soon before it fledged. E13 was also
seen last year (2015) on 14 May near Andover, MA. The bird was in breeding
plumes. Maybe it's heading back that way?

Chip Weseloh, retired from the Canadian Wildlife Service and copied here,
has been tagging Greats for several years. (We use his protocol.) The NYC
birds are all tagged in yellow.

Please keep up the good spotting.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park CBC preliminary results for 15 Dec

2013-12-17 Thread Susan Elbin
The 114th Annual Christmas Bird Count was held in Central Park on 15
December 2013. The day started with a snow storm and ice, but by the time
the count began, the skies were merely overcast. Temperatures were just
below freezing at 8 am but rose to 36 degrees by mid-day. We were 75
birders on slush and ice. Many of us discovered our waterproof boots
weren't all that!

We are still checking some flock numbers and count week birds with other
teams, and this is not the full count circle (NJLH), but here is the tally
so far. We saw 5,414 birds representing 62 species. There was one each of
Snow Goose, Green-winged Teal, and Bald Eagle at the Reservoir; a Baltimore
Oriole in the Ramble; and an American Woodcock in the Northwest section.
Noticeable by their absence were Black-capped Chickadees (n=1) and Tufted
Titmouse (n=1)!

There was a large flock of Canada Geese flying over Manhattan on Sunday.

[nysbirds-l] Request for help American Oystercatchers in NYC

2013-02-07 Thread Susan Elbin
Attention Shorebirders!

If anyone is going to be at Jones Beach, Point Look-Out, or the beaches of
Jamaica Bay and the Rockaways, we need your help.

As part of an American Oystercatcher project, we are working with Shiloh
Schulte (Manomet Center for Conservation Science). He has been flying
over beaches
of New York City, looking for roosting birds. He would appreciate some help
with ground-truthing. The sites mentioned above are the places Shiloh flew
over those sites on February 5, 2013. If anyone can get to those sites
today – or within the next 7 days, within 2 hours on either side of high
tide – please let me know.

The information needed:

Your Name

Location

Time of Day

Weather (temperature, precipitation)

Time of High Tide

Number of birds seen. (REMEMBER: Zero is an important number!)

Any additional observations (banded birds, etc)

Number of people in your group

Amount of time spent at the site

Thank you for your help on this important – and fun!! – project.
