Was checking the feeders near the portable classroom across from the building
here near the entrance at the oceanside MNSA and noticed a Dickcissel in with
the many house sparrows, seen perched and working on the ground. -Kev

[nysbirds-l] Dickcissel at Jamaica Bay

2021-08-15 Thread swalter15
Probably not a big deal for a Dickcissel to show up at Jamaica Bay Wildlife
Refuge, but kind of weird for it to be on (and in) the East Pond. While it was
posted somewhere at the time, it's probably not chase-able, as it was in a spot
with lots of foot traffic (just before the cut through the Phragmites south of
the Raunt). But to get a sense of the unusual sight, I've posted some pictures
to my web site (along with some other things from the last week). They can be
found on the Recent Work page at http://stevewalternature.com/
Other things around today include the continuing Black-belied Whistling Duck,
both Phalarope species, and a Black Tern.

[nysbirds-l] Dickcissel and Lark Sparrow Robert moses field 2- yes

2019-08-29 Thread kevin rogers
Both birds showed well, even together in the same photo frame at times, however
if your on your way now those two birds and the flock they are associated with
moved east to the volleyball courts and then north and I lost them around
3:30pm. Finding a sparrow flock of at least ten sparrows with a few cowbirds
mixed in would be a recommended way of searching...other birders had found the
bird just a few hundred yards east of the pay tolls at field two and they stuck
around for a bit, then about a hundred yards at a time the whole flock went
tree to tree until flying slightly south into the volleyball courts then north
into a tree near the volleyball nets and then north and out of my sight...very
possibly they will reset back to the preferred spot a few hundred yards east of
the toll booths again, at least that would be the hope!! Good luck- Kev

as I know, it sees perfectly well...

[nysbirds-l] Dickcissel at Jones Beach

2016-09-12 Thread Tim Healy
I've found a Dickcissel along the fisherman's road near the coast guard station
at Jones Beach. Heard repeatedly and seen atop a bush to the west of the road.
Over a dozen Bobolink flyovers in first 20 minutes here. Warblers and others
heard but I'm just getting started.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Dickcissel & Montauk Gulls

2016-01-18 Thread redknot
On a wide ranging day of birding yesterday I visited Southard Town Park for the
Dickcissel which obliged by sitting on the fencing around the tennis courts. I
then headed to Montauk and along the east jetty to Montauk Harbor had both the
Glaucous and Iceland gull. Also had remarkably close-up views of two grey seals
in the harbor, adjacent to the inlet, rubbing and biting each other (courtship
or mating behavior?).   At the Point I could not relocate the King eider seen
the week before but I have no doubt it was among the very large Common eider -
scoter flocks.

[nysbirds-l] Dickcissel Southward's Pond Park

2016-01-02 Thread Peter Reisfeld
The very cooperative Dickcissel found yesterday by John Gluth was present this
morning behind the Park Avenue tennis courts of Southward’s Pond Park. Shortly
after 9 he flew way out toward the western horizon, but returned 15 minutes
later. Just as I was leaving he plopped down on the lawn 10 feet in front of
me and posed for this video.

[nysbirds-l] DICKCISSEL, Southard's Pond Park (Suffolk Co.)

2016-01-01 Thread John Gluth
There is a 1st-winter male DICKCISSEL near the tennis courts at the southern
end of the park (Park Ave. entrance). It's loosely associating with a few Song
Sparrows, feeding in the short grass and bare ground between the courts and
bike path. Quite confiding, not flushing despite joggers and dog walkers
passing within 10-15 feet. I left it at ~3:15, in the capable hands of Pete

Morris whom I texted just after finding it. Good luck if you go.
Happy New Year!

[nysbirds-l] Dickcissel at Oceanside Nature Center

2015-10-07 Thread syschiff
Marine Nature Study Area 7 Oct

The marshes held a few GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2 KILLDEER and both Egrets. There
were about a dozen sparrows on the paths including SAVANNAH, SONG and SWAMP
SPARROWS.
In the dune area, a dozen YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were active. As I moved on, a
DICKCISSEL popped up along with a HOUSE FINCH, both quickly flying off. Lovely
day.

[nysbirds-l] Dickcissel at Inwood Hill Park, Rufous Hummingbird at AMNH

2012-01-03 Thread Joe DiCostanzo
I don't think anyone has posted an update on these two lingerers from last
year, but despite the drop in temperature, the Dickcissel at Inwood Hill Park
in northern Manhattan and the Rufous Hummingbird at The Rose Center of the
American Museum of Natural History were both still present this afternoon.

The Dickcissel is just north of the west end of Dyckman Street at the south
west end of Inwood Hill Park, near the ball fields. going in from Dyckman St.
it was not as far as the basebal "dugout", but was at the first set of rock
outcroppings.

The Rufous Hummingbird continues on West 81st Street at the main entrance to
the Rose Center, just off Central Park West.

Happy New Year.

[nysbirds-l] Dickcissel present, Inwood, Manhattan

2011-12-30 Thread Samuel Stuart
All,

The Dickcissel is present at the Dyckman Fields as of 3pm today in an area
located at the western end of Dyckman St in Inwood. The bird is still
associating with a large group of House Sparrows. I saw the bird in the small
field just south of the Baseball fields and along the Black fence running
parallel to the train tracks.

The yellow breast really helps the bird to stand out. However, when viewed from
the back it blends into the flock remarkably well.

[nysbirds-l] Dickcissel as Christmas present

2011-12-25 Thread John Gluth
I found an unexpected Christmas present this afternoon. Not under the tree
in the house, but in the holly (and under the juniper hedge, and on the
feeders...) in my backyard. A new species for my yard list--a Dickcissel.
I get a horde of House Sparrows at my feeders every winter (~65 today)
and have been feeding birds for 17 years, so I guess it was inevitable
I'd get a Dickcissel eventually. Still, it was an exciting find. The bird
was quite aggressive when at one of my hanging feeders, giving loud,
harsh call notes and lunging at House Sparrows that crowded too close.
Photos of the bird (an apparent first-winter male) can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Dickcissel

2011-11-13 Thread Joe T
The Dickcissel was still present at the Boat Basin parking lot this afternoon
through 2:30pm, foraging in the bushes just past the restrooms with a flock of
House Sparrows.  Further down, there were no shorebirds present on the spit,
although I heard a report of good numbers of Dunlin, Sanderling and Red Knot
from this morning at the locale at high tide.  Also that 2 Marbled Godwits were
mixed in - but none of these birds were there this afternoon.

[nysbirds-l] Dickcissel - Etna, NY - 7 October 2011

2011-10-07 Thread Chris Tessaglia-Hymes
I have uploaded an audio clip of the Dickcissel from this morning (at 2:47
AM), as well as a spectrogram frame-grab, showing the characteristics of
this flight call. These can be accessed by going to these links:

Audio:

http://www.NortheastBirding.com/111007.024749_DICKCISSEL_Etna_NY.wav

Image:

http://www.NortheastBirding.com/111007.024749_DICKCISSEL_Etna_NY.jpg

Note, the audio file is five seconds in duration, with the flight call
occurring at approximately 2 ½ seconds into the clip.

This particular call consisted of five distinct note peaks and with a single
fainter introductory and closing note, for a total of seven identifiable
peaks.

I simply didn’t expect to detect anything on the recording from last night,
given how quiet it was, let alone get something as good as a (another!)
Dickcissel flight note.

Good birding!

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

[nysbirds-l] Dickcissel - 7 October 2011 @ 2:47AM - Etna, NY

2011-10-07 Thread Chris Tessaglia-Hymes
So, does anyone know what's up with Dickcissel's this year? I've recorded my
loudest one yet this season, this morning, on an absolutely dead night
(migration-wise). This makes the 4th bird over Etna, NY in about a week.
Maybe these are just more common migrants over Upstate/Central NY than I'm
aware; maybe it's just this season. Thoughts?

I'll pull something together later with links to sounds, and images of the
spectrograms.

Thanks and good birding!

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

There was a Dickcissel in a flock of Cowbirds and House Sparrows in the
hedgerow of goldenrod and pokeweed across from house #24 (Pierson Rd.?) at the
Georgica Assoc. this afternoon.

A large movement of birds passed over between 10 and 11pm in the mist.
Swainson's and Gray-cheeked Thrushes, Common Yellowthroats, Redstarts, Palms,
Yellow-rumps, Blackpolls, Scarlet Tanager, Savannah, Chipping, White-throated
and one exuberant Grasshopper Sparrow.
