[nysbirds-l] Orange- crowned warbler, lofts pond Baldwin, nassau county
Hi All!! Just saw and photod an Orange-crowned Warbler by the northwest end of lofts pond, basically walk north if coming from merrick road side, and after 100 yards or so there are houses with white fences to the side of the pond and that's where its hanging out, along the pond adjacent to those houses. Good luck if you go!! -Kev -- (copy & paste any URL below, then modify any text "_DOT_" to a period ".") [nysbirds-l] Orange Crowned Warbler- oceanside MNSA , nassau county
Hi all, Just had a Orange Crowned Warbler on the bedell creek side of the nature study, for those very familiar with the MNSA it was right near the fence where we see 'Buster' the dog,... walk the path behind the building, curving around the corner and up that path a little until the green fence ends, that seemed the general area it preferred. [nysbirds-l] Orange-crowned Warbler, Central Park NYC - Sunday, 10/3 (+ lingering Mourning Warbler lower Manhattan)
Sunday, October 2nd - The Orange-crowned Warbler seen today at the area of West 77th St. - “triplets bridge” as locally-known, in Manhattan’s (N.Y. City) Central Park may or may not be the very 'first-of-season’ for that park or the county; more on that & other N.Y. County birds at a later time or date… Thanks also, to 2 of the region’s great naturalist-observers. (there was also a continuing, lingering adult-male Mourning Warbler reported again, where seen before, at the (Manhattan) World Trade Center memorial area; thanks to E. Guest-Consales for that update for Sunday.) good birds, Tom Fiore manhattan -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Orange-crowned Warbler at Croton Point Park today
A first year bird was at the model airplane field. I was fortunate to get a photo of it perched on one of the fences. The cap at Croton Point has been extensively plowed in the last week. [nysbirds-l] Orange-crowned Warbler - Kingston, Ulster County
A lady from Kingston, Ulster County called in to my radio show this afternoon saying that she thought she was seeing a female Painted Bunting in her yard (actually landing and pecking at the windshield of her car). She later sent me photos - which as it turns out were of an Orange-crowned Warbler. The lady, Rebecca Schweitzer, has since entered the sighting in eBird - with all the photos attached. Orange-crowned Warbler is a good find for Ulster County anytime of year - but even more so in December. There are a few records of OCWA in the Kingston area over the last decade or so. I recall another Ulster County winter record of one coming to a backyard feeder near Rosendale many years ago. [nysbirds-l] Orange-crowned Warbler, NYBG, Bronx
I led a walk this morning at NYBG for NYC Audubon - normally the Botanic Gardens are the realm of the inimitable Debbie Becker of course, but I venture up there now and then. It was a gorgeous day today, but there didn’t seem to be much in the way of new migratory movement, which surprised me given the mild conditions and favorable winds the night before. Nonetheless, we spotted 36 species, including a cooperative Orange-crowned Warbler loosely associating with a flock of Yellow-rumps on the Thain Forest path just north of the old snuff factory. We also had a Louisiana Waterthrush along the Bronx River further north in the forest, as well as many more Yellow-rumps, several Palms, and two Black-and-White Warblers. Nothing else out of the ordinary... Tree & Northern Rough-winged Swallows over the “Lakes”, a small flock of Cedar Waxwings nearby, lots of nest-building activity among the Grackles & Robins. [nysbirds-l] Orange-crowned Warbler - Northport, Suffolk Co.
Hello Earlier today did I come across an Orange-crowned Warbler at Crab Meadow Beach in Northport, Suffolk County. This bird was loosely associating with a Nashville Warbler which is also a good bird to see in November! I will tell you where these warblers were: They were on the eastern most section of the southern side of the line of trees and shrubs which border the south side of the parking lot; right by the dilapidated bulkhead along the creek. This trail is accessible by going to the gazebo at the southeast corner of the parking lot. Photos of the OCWA are in my ebird checklist which also mentions some other birds I observed (nothing to get too excited about). http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32380588 Ok good-bye have a good day and evening! [nysbirds-l] Orange-crowned Warbler, Alley Pond Park
I came across an Orange-crowned Warbler late this afternoon in the Alley (Douglaston) marsh section of Alley Pond Park, Queens. This was on the east side of Alley Creek. Lots of bird activity here, although I'd have to stoop down to the likes of Purple Finch and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker for the next rarest thing. But for a couple of seconds, I was thinking something else. I watched a bird rise out of a meadow that had me thinking Yellow-headed Blackbird. It was, in fact, a Phoebe carrying an Orange Sulphur. Not nice to do that me - or to the butterfly. Butterfly numbers have dipped a lot here since two weeks ago. Ordinarily, I'd just attribute that to the season. But now I'm wondering how much Phoebes are responsible. Another odd moment - actually much longer than that - came courtesy of a Black-billed Cuckoo yesterday at Lighthouse Point in East Haven, CT. it didn't seem to know that its kind tends to be secretive and difficult to photograph. To meet my obligatory periodic web update, I've posted a picture at http://stevewalternature.com/ . [nysbirds-l] Orange-crowned Warbler, Queens
The field across from Oakland Lake (northeastern Queens) is still pulling in migrants, with an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER there today. Still some sparrows in there, with 2 Savannahs most interesting. While they've been common throughout migration, it seems late for that now. They seem to have been there a few days, at least - wintering ones in northern Queens would be unusual. Also good for the neighborhood - in fact the first one I've seen in northern Queens - is a REDHEAD on the lake today. Did not see the Cackling Goose there or on Alley Pond today. [nysbirds-l] Orange-crowned Warbler, Prospect Park/Kings County
This morning at roughly 11am I was treated to views of a bathing Orange-crowned Warbler where the Lullwater opens up towards the Peninsula. The bird preened for a few minutes at eye level and eventually worked it's way high into the trees and across Wellhouse Drive onto the base of Lookout Hill. The wildflower meadow on top of Lookout Hill would be worth checking. The feeders at Breeze Hill have already drawn a crowd with many Goldfinch, House Finch and a single group of 5 White-breasted Nuthatch. Ring-billed Gull numbers were up over 300. Seems like they are aware of the impending weather. [nysbirds-l] Orange Crowned Warbler, E. Quogue, LI
Today, at 2:45PM I had an exceptional experience observing an Orange-crowned Warbler feeding with a Winter Wren on a suet feeder at Quogue Wildlife Refuge while tying my X-country ski boots on. At 4PM, we (Julia Hryvniak and me) observed another (saw two on our way to Quogue in Easport) Wilson's Snipe in the outflow of the pond at the Refuge S. of the dam with the boardwalk. It seems like in winter, when standing freshwater is frozen to the shore, the Snipes are limited to flowing freshwater (not frozen) that has saturated mucky substrate exposed. Both the locations where we observed W. Snipe today were estuarine with fluctuating fresh/brackish water velocity and elevation. In addition to the Warbler, there were Red-winged Blackbirds and Brown Headed Cowbirds eating the mixed seed at the Refuge feeders. [nysbirds-l] Orange-crowned Warbler at Goat Island (Niagara Co) - 20 Jan
Joe Mitchell and I headed up to Goat Island in Niagara Falls late this morning and were later joined by Bill Watson. The three of us spent some time searching for the Orange-crowned Warbler, and after nearly an hour we found it foraging by itself in two small spruce trees that are located at the edge of the large brushy island that runs NE from the Three Sisters parking area. We had nice looks at it for about 10 mins before it flew through the brush and in the general direction of the short pines that are located near the restroom building. Joe then picked it up again as it was working its way towards the restrooms, after which it flew across the main road towards the state park maintenance buildings (these are the buildings one encounters on your right almost immediately after crossing the driving bridge onto Goat Island). It then spent the next 45 mins methodically foraging (almost crawling) amongst the bows of the large (50+ ft), sprawling Norway Spruce located near the large electrical generator box at the SE corner of the maintenance buildings. During this time a few other birders showed up and we had nice (but brief) glimpses of the bird as it slowly moved in and out of view amongst the bows 30-40 ft up. On our way back south, we stopped along the Niagara River at Rich Marine in Buffalo, and almost immediately after pulling into the lot, Joe spotted a juvenile female Snowy Owl sitting across the canal on the pier at the north end of Squaw Island. Both the 1st-winter Little Gull (in-flight near end of pier) and juvenile Black-legged Kittiwake (on water amongst Bonaparte's) put in appearances here as well.
