Re:[nysbirds-l] Terns at Nickerson Beach this morning: update

2018-06-05 Thread Robert Lewis
 Slight correction!
When I got home and reviewed my photographs I strongly suspected that I had
seen and photographed a first summer Arctic Tern this morning.  Shai Mitra
confirmed it.
I  will post some photos to The New York Birders facebook site.

There were around ten birders checking Nickerson Beach this morning, from

hung around from around 10:00 to 11:00.

If you arrive before 9:00, just drive in.  Supposedly, after that there is a
fee, quite large if you don't live in Nassau County.  However, someone today
reported that at 9:20 there was still no one at the booth.

[nysbirds-l] Terns at Nickerson Beach

2017-06-03 Thread syschiff
Nickerson Beach 3 June

Sun turned to clouds and then rain as I walked down to the ocean in front of
the main tern colony. On the beach resting were 4 ROSEATE TERN, a single
GULL-BILLED TERN which flew off along with BLACK SKIMMERS, COMMON TERNS and
AMERICAN OYSTER CATCHERS. One Roseate had an exceptionally bright pink breast.
The rain stopped and I managed a distant photo.

You can go after 5PM and at that time they don’t charge parking fees. I was
there yesterday around 5PM and it was pretty windy and most of the terns were
concentrated on the left side of the beach. You should park near the building
were the bathrooms are, you walk towards the beach and turn left and you will
find the terns (by the hundreds) sitting on the sand, flying around or feeding
(fishing) in on the shore. Yesterday, there was a Black tern and several other
species other than the Common terns that are nesting on the dunes.
