[nysbirds-l] Red Headed Woodpecker in Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn mid day

2021-05-03 Thread Jonathan Perez

at 12:45, read a report online of a red-headed woodpecker ran over to fort
Greene park. at first I saw only a red-bellied by the tennis park and thought
the report only referred to the red bellied. Then a grey squirrel flushed out
high in a dead beach above the tennis court, The red-headed woodpecker.

It appeared in the dead trees over the tennis court. It was markedly smaller
and different than the red bellied woodpecker. It had a bright scarlet red head
white window on wings and rump, black tail, white belly breast and black wings
with white windows.

Couldn’t locate after as it flew east.

Please excuse my brevity. Sent from my iPhone

[nysbirds-l] Red Headed Woodpecker -Suffolk

2020-01-03 Thread Christopher Gangemi
The immature Red-headed Woodpecker found yesterday by John Todaro and
Marguerite Wolffsohn was still present this morning near Long Pond in Sag
Harbor.

To find the bird, park by the tennis courts near the Sag Harbor entrance to the
trail. The bird has been frequenting the patch of woods where the Sprig Tree
trail meets the Spur trail, about 3/4 mile in.

I’ll eBird later. Also along the trail was a Pine Warbler, a handful of
Bluebirds, and a Brown Creeper among others.

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker in Kew Gardens near Forest Park, Queens County

2019-12-28 Thread Nancy Tognan
There is a Red-headed Woodpecker that is very easy to find because it is
enjoying street trees. It has been reported in the area (near Forest Park) for
the past few days.
Park near: 129 Audley St, Kew Gardens, NY 11418. It was flying from tree to
tree along Audley St on both sides of Abingdon Rd.

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker and raptor activity in a busy swamp outside New Paltz on 09/15/19.

2019-09-17 Thread robert adamo
During this past weekend ( 9 /13-15/ 19 ) I attended the NYSOA Annual
Meeting in Kingston. It was hosted by the Catskill Center for Conservation
and Development, with assistance by the John Burroughs Natural History
Society, and was highlighted by the keynote speaker at the Saturday
banquet, Nathan Pieplow. His presentation, entitled "The Language of
Birds", was chocked full of his experiences from both the field and
laboratory, ie, the Brown Thrasher is capable of over 2100 different
vocalizations - the most of any bird species in the world...who knew ?

Field trips are always a popular activity during our statewide convention,
with this year's meeting being fairly productive ! On Sunday, after taking
part in the excursion to the Shawangunk Grasslands NWR, 4 of us left the
main group, and took off for the "hot swamp", near New Paltz, where a grand
total of 12 Red-headed Woodpeckers were recorded on Saturday. Upon reaching
our destination, but before even getting out of our cars, we were greeted
by an adult Bald Eagle, circling over the swamp. Once out, we, in this
case, being 3 NYSOA members from the Elmira area (Bill Ostrander, and 2
ladies, Gail & Christine, whom I apologize to for not remembering their
surnames. Christine was the first to spot a RHWO, an immature, the first of
a total of 6 birds, 3 immatures and 3 adults ! When we weren't looking for
the woodpeckers, or listening to their noise making, we were kept busy with
a good supply of raptors. In addition to the BAEA, they were: Turkey
Vulture; Black Vulture; Sharp-shinned Hawk; Red-shouldered Hawk; Red-tailed
Hawk and American Kestrel. Also, while at the Shawangunk Grasslands, we had
Northern Harrier, Red-tailed Hawk and American Kestrel.

See you next year in Syracuse,
Bob

RE:[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker in Queens

2018-05-11 Thread Steve Walter
This is interesting. The Red-headed Woodpecker is still in Cunningham Park
(Queens) four days later. It's in the same area as before and likely has
been on all my visits this week. In my experience, they tend to stay
moderately high when in deciduous woods. The first sighting was by chance.
Today, I was alerted to its presence when it began calling, and was only
able to spot it when it flew from one tree to another nearby.

Hi all,
A nice adult RHWO has been present at the Church in the Garden, at the corner
of Clinton/Glen Cove Rd and Stewart Ave, near the Roosevelt Field mall. The
bird is obsessed with a partially dead tree right in front of the church, along
Stewart Avenue. It has been mostly cooperative (I have even seen it just

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker, Pelham Bay Park, Bronx

2017-04-22 Thread Jack Rothman
This Red-headed was intent on occupying a cavity where a Red-bellied Woodpecker
was already inside. He continued to drum inches away from her cavity and she
poked out her head every so often. The male Red-bellied eventually came by and
chased the Red-headed away but he was persistent and returned again in a few
minutes. This happened several times.
We watched the drama for about 20 minutes, fascinating.

To find the bird, walk up the path from the Orchard Beach parking lot, Bronx.
The path is located on the NE corner and goes to Hunter Island.
As you proceed up the hill look for a path to your right and a cylindrical
trash container. Continue up the hill about 20 feet more and look on your left
for a tree wth woodpecker cavities.

For those who knew about the GH Owl nest on Hunter Island, the three owlets
have all fledged.

The Red-headed Woodpecker was also seen by Bronx Brendan Keogh and another
birder we met on the trail, Michael Walter.

[nysbirds-l] red headed woodpecker

2017-04-19 Thread MICHAEL HIGGISTON
The red headed WP was seen this morning around 8:30 in Sunken Meadow
SP.   We were lucky as the bird was very quiet and remain perched in one
place for about 15 min.

Directions:
The main road into SMSP includes a bridge.  at the end of the bridge,
there is a road, Naples Road, that leads to the golf course.  Park in
lot immediately to the right.  Follow Naples Road (it is so marked at
the intersection) until you pass the closed parking lot.  continue until
you see the first lightpole on your left.  About 10 feet before this
pole, you'll see a chain hanging from 2 trees.  That's the trailhead.
Take the (winding) trail about quarter mile until you come to a dried
out sandy streambed.   Go up the other side and look for the WP on the
right side of the trail.

Thanks to Jim Osterlund, Suzy Feustal, Peter Reisfeld for helpful
directions and to Vinny Pellegrino for finding the WP.

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker - Flanders, LI

2016-04-26 Thread Eileen Schwinn
An adult Red-headed Woodpecker was seen this AM at 10:30 by Vincent Cagno,
along Pleasure Drive/near Maple Swamp gated entrance, in Flanders/Riverhead.
It was relocated 10 minutes later, when it was seen flying and landing in the
trees between the barn-like structure and Pleasure Drive. The bird was being
harassed by a Red-bellied WP, and was last seen in the woods near home #300. I
have been unable to relocated the bird again.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Red Headed Woodpecker Hamlin Beach State Park June 22 2015

2015-06-22 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Hi Dave and all,

Although adult Common Terns in summer are generally described and depicted as
having black-tipped bills, it is not unusual for some to show almost no black,
even early in the breeding season:

https://picasaweb.google.com/109808209543611018404/CommonTernsOnLongIsland#5745388961926028146

--and this condition actually becomes the rule later in the season:

https://picasaweb.google.com/109808209543611018404/RoseateTern#5643725119113510242

Similarly, adult Roseate Terns are supposed to have black bills, but it is not
unusual for some to show an orange base, even early in the season:

https://picasaweb.google.com/109808209543611018404/RoseateTern#5755742905123461890
https://picasaweb.google.com/109808209543611018404/RoseateTern#5221895637478416418

--and this condition becomes the rule later in the season:

https://picasaweb.google.com/109808209543611018404/RoseateTern#5098225142376276930
https://picasaweb.google.com/109808209543611018404/RoseateTern#6049291680108800850

Finally, adult (or near-adult) Arctic Terns are supposed to have completely red
bills, but only a minority of those seen in NYS actually do:

https://picasaweb.google.com/109808209543611018404/ArcticTernsOnLongIsland#5221895639803196402

Instead, adult-like NYS ARTE are much more likely to show black-tipped bills:

https://picasaweb.google.com/109808209543611018404/ArcticTernsOnLongIsland#5747336943467462930
https://picasaweb.google.com/109808209543611018404/OnThisDate#5479786977293842002

Thus it is very important to use a combination of characters, with due
attention to how each varies in relation to age and season, when identifying
any Sterna.

An adult (full bright plumage) RED-HEADED Woodpecker made an appearance at
the Loch / Ravine at about 7:50 a.m. today; I ran out of camera battery and
asked a (non-birding) photographer if he'd take a few shots of the bird,
which he did then showed them to another N. End birder... but we did not
immediately re-locate the woodpecker, it may have moved somewhat south of
where it had been, which was high in trees overlooking the Glenspan Arch, not
far from the western end of the Loch but viewed from the northwestern-most of
Loch's the several rustic wooden bridges. I tried looking a bit in the more
open trees at lawn field areas on the SE section of the Pool, to the West
Drive near within the NW-most portion of the North Meadow ballfields,
where scattered large trees are - which might interest a Red-headed
Woodpecker, but in spring-migration sightings of that species in Central,
they can be quite flighty mobile within the park, and of course could also
move on out, as a typically diurnal-as-well-as-nocturnal migrant.

In the north end of the park generally there are pockets of very good migrant
activity with many (perhaps most or even more) species in variety from that
part of the park as was seen yesterday, but with a slightly different mix
of what was now is common or less so, today. Many of the more regular
warbler species are certainly present along with vireos, thrushes,
 flycatchers, more, as found yesterday.

Many more sightings are sure to come forth over the day.

 good luck,

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker still at Muttontown Preserve

2014-04-12 Thread John Gluth
The RED-HEADED WOODPECKER that wintered at Muttontown Preserve was still
present today, seen well for 10 minutes or so by 4 fellow birders and myself,
~100 yards down the trail that heads southeast from the visitors center. Its
head still had some retained brown juvenile feathers, mostly around the eyes,
but molt has rendered it predominantly red now.

Earlier our group had birded Shu Swamp Preserve and Roosevelt Memorial Park on
Oyster Bay. At the former, highlights were a very confiding WILSON'S SNIPE, ~14
RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, 1 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER (heard only), ~12 Palm Warblers, 2
Pine Warblers, 1 Hermit Thrush, and an AMERICAN BITTERN briefly glimpsed by one
member of our party as it flew away from the pond near the railroad tracks at
the preserve's north end. At nearby Roosevelt Park we found two of the four
recently seen RED-NECKED GREBES, both out on Oyster Bay ~200 yards from the
base of the closed pier, and a pair of Northern Rough-winged Swallows that
repeatedly flew under the boardwalk pilings, perhaps investigating a potential
nest site.

At nearby Roosevelt Park we found two of the four
recently seen RED-NECKED GREBES, both out on Oyster Bay ~200 yards from the
base of the closed pier, and a pair of Northern Rough-winged Swallows that
repeatedly flew under the boardwalk pilings, perhaps investigating a potential
nest site.

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker tempting fate

2014-02-23 Thread glennq
The Red-headed Woodpecker was again in my neighbor’s yard this weekend,
sporting quite a bit of red now. This makes exactly four months since it showed
up on November 22nd.

It seems to have weathered Mother Nature’s worst. However, yesterday, with all
the snow melt and its caches probably depleted, I saw it foraging for acorns on
the ground near my neighbor’s porch.
This will almost certainly be its death sentence as my neighbor’s cats are
absolute killers. I’ll continue to report on any future sightings.

Cheers,

Glenn Quinn

The immature Red-headed Woodpecker, present since November 22nd in my

Since it arrived, it has been caching food in the various oak trees on adjacent

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker @ Kissena Park Queens

2014-01-29 Thread Cesar Castillo
While birding Kissena Park this afternoon I ran into Joseph O'Sullivan.  He
reported a Red-headed woodpecker, male with bright red head.  I went looking
for the bird immediately and found it.  Took and video.  The bird was seen by
him and I in the sycamore trees just north of the Lake, south of Oak Ave, very
near restrooms/park offices.

http://flic.kr/p/jAZAJ3

Also reported by Joseph were some Ravens which I missed, and a Merlin, which I
did see.   Rusty blackbirds, brown thrasher and catbird continue at the park.
A number of fox sparrows also are associating with the brown thrasher.

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker in Green-Wood Cemetery continues

Saw the juvenile Red-headed WP continuing in Green-Wood late this afternoon.
The bird is starting to show a little red on the head. I have some pictures on
my blog http://matthewwills.com/2014/01/12/red-headed-nearly/ The location was
as noted in earlier posts here, right across the street immediately inside the
25th St. Neo-Gothic gate.

Other highlights were four raptor species: Red-tailed (2x, including one bird
with a full crop), Peregrine, Merlin, and Sharp-shinned. Largest clump of Fox
Sparrows I've ever seen hanging out together (5).

Not many birds all told, but choice ones.

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker, Hauppauge (Suffolk)

2014-01-01 Thread glennq
Today, I observed the immature Red-headed Woodpecker that has taken up
residence in my yard and my neighbor’s yard since November 22nd.
Since I first saw it on the 22nd, it spends all its time caching food in the
various large oak trees on the properties. It never comes to any of the suet
feeders and aggressively chases other birds, even Red-bellied Woodpeckers, and
even squirrels once in a while.
Nice bird for New Years Day. Not sure what it’s doing in such a suburban
setting. We’ll see how it does with tomorrow’s storm and Friday’s temperatures.

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker remains@ Turtle Cove, Pelham Bay Park

2013-11-15 Thread Jack Rothman
At least one Red-headed Woodpecker remains at Turtle Cove on the wood chip
trail alongside the driving range fence.

The area remains quite birdy, with several White-throated Sparrows, Swamp and
Song Sparrows. There are flocks of Cedar Waxwings and Red-winged Blackbirds
feeding on berries along the trail. Several Red-bellied and Downy Woodpeckers,
Eastern Towhee, American Goldfinch, and more of the usual winter species. There
were also a pair of Green-winged Teal on the pond.
Across the road, in Eastchester Bay, were several Black Duck and at least two
hundred Brant.

It should be noted that the Turtle Cove area was once covered with invasive
species. The invasives were removed and now native plants have returned. The
return of these native plants has substantially increased our bird population
in this area.

[nysbirds-l] Red Headed Woodpecker @ Turtle Cove

2013-10-28 Thread Jack Rothman
At least two Red Headed Woodpeckers at Turtle Cove in Pelham Bay Park remain. I
saw two today at approximately 2PM. The birds fly in and out of the general
area on the wood chip trail. If the bird is not present when you get there,
give it some time, they usually show.

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker @ Kissena Park Queens...

2013-10-19 Thread Andrew Baksh
An immature Red-headed Woodpecker was observed and photographed by
Andria and I near the lake at Kissena Park in Queens. Presumably the
same bird seen by Eric Miller earlier in the week and (maybe?) the one
also seen across the street at Kissena Corridor by Joseph Sullivan and
I.

Now that I have some photos, it would be interesting to see if one is
seen and photographed at the corridor to determine of there are two
birds or not.

Good luck if you try for it.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker at Kissena Corridor Park

2013-10-17 Thread Andrew Baksh
This gets interesting. About a week ago, I told Eric Miller that I thought
I had an immature Red-headed Woodpecker fly across in front of me exactly
in the location Joseph Sullivan described at Kissena Corridor. The event
was quick and I could not relocate the bird and so chalked it up to wishful
thinking.

After receiving Eric's message today, I spoke to him and we briefly
discussed whether his bird was the bird I saw or not. However, since I had
nothing much to work with, it was a no go in comparing notes to Eric's
sighting. Just reading Joseph's e-mail made me wonder. Two Red-headed
Woodpeckers or one?

I hope we get some photos so we do some photo forensics. It would be fun
to determine if we have multiple birds or just the one ranging across the
road and back.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker @ Kissena Park Queens...

Add Queens, to the list of boroughs reporting Red-headed Woodpeckers.

I received a message today from Eric Miller who reported seeing an immature
Red-headed Woodpecker on Tuesday, near the lake at Kissena Park. No guarantee
the bird is still there but worth knowing to keep and eye and ear out for the
bird.

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker at Croton Point

2013-09-23 Thread Anne Swaim
An immature red-headed woodpecker offered good looks this morning for Saw Mill
River Audubon's monthly Monday bird walk at Croton Point County Park in
Westchester.

Well seen on large dead tree beside nature center at 8:30am. It was observed
again, an hour later, in dead trees east side and further down driveway toward
adjacent play area.

This same bird was likely first observed Friday morning in same location based
on second-hand description from another local birder.
