[nysbirds-l] Whip-poor-will in my yard in Yonkers!
I just had a Whip-poor-will calling in my yard or on my house! I can't tell if it's sitting on the house or what since I'm hearing it so close and on all sides of the house. [nysbirds-l] whip-poor-will
I would like to correct my email from last night, as it was misleading. Rereading that post, it would seem to indicate that the bird was in the parking lot. It was not. The whip was calling from a distance, west of the refuge, probably from the grounds of Westhampton Airport. The refuge manager told me that he had heard the chuck calling on several occasions this spring from around the refuge. The Whip-poor-will is still present, again sleeping on the same branch of the same tree at the top of the path along the stream, up from the west side of Evodia towards maintenance. The dappled sunlight is quite lovely on him this morning. Various warblers on my brief walk through the Ramble this morning: Black-Throated Blue, Black-and-White, and Parula just north of Laupot Bridge; Common Yellowthroat everywhere. Also a Brown Thrasher at the willow on the east side of the Upper Lobe, and the immature Black-Crowned Night Heron on the west side. -Ed Gaillard Manhattan -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Whip-poor-wills in the Dwarf Pine Plains of Wsthampton
On a "Goatsuckers Galore" trip to the Westhampton Dwarf Pine Plains, sponsored by ALULA Birding and Natural History Tours on 6/5/2012, we heard four (or perhaps five) different Whip-poor-wills calling from various locations in the southwest quadrant of the Dwarf Pine Plains. Disappointingly, we did not hear any Chuck-will's-widows. It was a night with a full moon but unfortunately the strongly overcast sky blocked out the moon's light; we probably would have had a stronger response were it not for the extensive cloud cover. During the daylight hours we saw the usual birds common in the DPP including Chipping and Field Sparrows, Brown Thrasher, Eastern Towhee, N. Mockingbird, and Prairie Warbler. In the short-grass area around the model airplane field in the southeast quadrant we saw a lone Vesper Sparrow. This area and the adjacent Gabreski Airport appears to be a "stronghold" for this species which is an uncommon and local breeder on Long Island. [nysbirds-l] Whip-poor-will at Edgewood Preserve (Suffolk Co.)
This evening I went to Edgewood DEC preserve in Deer Park hoping to find displaying Woodcocks. My usual woodcock location had let me down on four previous visits this spring and I thought Edgewood had appropriate enough habitat that some birds might be there. Well, 8 o'clock came and went without a single "peent" heard. But as I dejectedly made my way back to my car I was surprised to hear the unmistakable calls of a single WHIP-POOR-WILL coming from the Pitch Pine woods a couple hundred yards away. It only called for around a minute, stopping before I was able to reach the spot the calls seemed to come from. I wasn't surprised that a Whip-poor-will was present because I'd heard a few there late last May, but the date sure seemed early, at least from my limited experience with the species. But according to Bull's there are at least 2 Long Island records from earlier in April (2nd and 8th). I was going to wait until late May to try for the species at Edgewood, but now I may not wait that long. Several hours spent birding earlier in the day (8:30-2:15) at several other locations in southwest Suffolk including Southard's Pond/Belmont Lake Greenbelt, Cedar Beach, Gardiner County Park and Heckscher State Park, was relatively fruitless regarding new migrant arrivals. The best find Was one LAUGHING GULL, a still mostly basic-plumaged adult, found in the McDonald's parking lot adjacent to Orowoc Lake in Islip. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
