My 79 has little plastic holders that the baseless bulbs snap into. The holders then 1/4 turn into the back of the speedo and are supposed to make a couple contacts. The contacts are very unreliable at this point, hence the jumper wires soldered from the printed ckt to the plastic holder. Br

Old and new (or after market) design differences. Also non flared is most likely an after market part. I ran into that a lot when I sold after market parts (Raybestos, Wagner etc.), people would bring the new part back with the old one to compare them to be sure.     TJ
