could see what is selected before erasing it, if memory serves the keystroke
for it is Control [, if not, possibly Alt [ but at any rate, you can verify
it with Insert-H.

No, batteries are now available for the original Echo which somehow
attach to its base. I think I read that these batteries come in various
sizes. An acquaintance bought one which purports to deliver nine hours
of play time on the original Echo.
