RE: (blindo's inn) Digital Audio Recorders - Edirol R09HR vs Zoom H4N

2010-04-06 Thread Jerry Berrier
I use an Edirol HR9, and although it's usable and somewhat accessible, it is
certainly not as accessible as the Bookport Plus. Now that I have the
Bookport Plus, I'm not sure I'll ever use the Edirol again.

assistance would be much appreciated. My email address is

To: blindos-inn blindos-...@googlegroups.com

Hi everyone. Sorry, another nerdy conversation on the way.

I'm looking to purchase a new audio recorder, and am stuck between the
Edirol R09HR and the Zoom H4N. Both look good for different reasons
(the Zoom looks particularly good as I understand you can use
different microphones to record different channels with it), but I'm
not sure about how accessible they are. If anybody has used either of
these machines, I'd be grateful for any info on features or
accessibility which they'd be happy to share. If somebody has used or
tried both, a comparison would also be really appreciated.

Thanks as always, Danny

Re: Flash Drive Update

2010-04-06 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

Hello Tom,
Do you have USB ports in the front of your computer?
If you do, then all you need to do is, plug the flash drive in to one of
those ports, then you can save things to it.

Things like NLS books audio files and so on.
That USB cable is not needed.
The only time you will need to use a USB cable, is when you are using a
cartridge that was specially made for the NLS player.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.
 John.

Sound Problem Partly Solved

2010-04-06 Thread Samuel Wilkins
Hello there, a few weeks ago, I posted a message about a problem I was
having with my sound. I have just found out that the reason I was having
problems was because the speakers in the Creative Audio console had been set
to 2.1 speakers. When I changed the setting, it went back to what I thought
it should sound like. However, whenever I tried to record in goldwave, there
is a slight stereo effect. This effect is like a flanger. I have tried it on
all of the speaker settings but without much success. Does anyone have any
suggestions?

I'm not sure what you already have Tom since you didn't include the
message
you're replying to, but if you're talking about the cable needed to
connect

a blank NLS cartridge to your PC then you need a standard USB extension
cable. This will have a full sized male connector at one end and a full
size
female connector at the other end. Note that due to the housing on the
NLS
cartridge, many USB extension cables aren't going to work, and you may
find
it best to buy a cable from ILA, APH or Perkins especially designed to
work

with the NLS cartridges.

I know this has all been discussed on this list before, but I just saw
this
message today and figured I better clarify. Also, as mentioned on this
list,

the BARD Talk web site is a treasure trove of good information. It's also
well organized and well thought out. I think it will clarify a lot and
won't
appear as contradictory as separate posts to a mailing list may seem to
be.

Hello Tom,
If it's a standard USB flash drive, it will plug right in to the USB port
that's located on the right side of the player.
I was the one that said that you'll have to wait a month to get the
cartridges from AMERICAN PRINTING HOUSE.

I called them Friday morning to place a credit card order for 2 of them.
I was told by the rep, that they were on back order.
She tried to talk me in to placing the order anyway, but that didn't make
any since to me to charge that to my credit card then having to wait a
month before I have them in my hands.
If this other website that I've been hearing about has them in stock, I
will get them from there.

Only one question though, do they take credit card orders over the phone?
My best regards.
John.

Okay..here's the deal on the drive: one end is rounded (it apparently
needs to be square)..in any case, no matter which way I turn that drive,
it _will not_ go in! As far as I can tell, there's no cap or anything
over it! Do I have some kind fof an odd-balled drive?
Tom Kaufman (aka Tomcat) P.S. I ordered my cartridge on line! Probably

Tom, what do you mean it doesn't fit the machine? There's a USB port on
the

right hand side of the machine, it's about half way to the back, right
behind the headphone jack. When the machine is shipped, it'll be covered
with a small plastic cap. The cap just pops off, and the flash drive
should
plug into that port with no problem. A flash drive can only go in one
way,

so if you're having trouble with it, you may want to flip it over. Good
luck.

Hello Christopher and list: Well..my trials and tribulations continue: I
had hoped to get a Kingston flash drive (they didn't have one)..so Mom
picked up one called a PNY..however..it doesn't even fit the machine!
I
have ordered a cartridge from APH..but someone on the list here informed

I'm not sure what you already have Tom since you didn't include the
message you're replying to, but if you're talking about the cable
needed to connect a blank NLS cartridge to your PC then you need a
standard USB extension cable. This will have a full sized male
connector at one end and a full size female connector at the other
end. Note that due to the housing on the NLS cartridge, many USB
extension cables aren't going to work, and you may find it best to buy
a cable from ILA, APH or Perkins especially designed to work with the
NLS cartridges.

I know this has all been discussed on this list before, but I just saw
this message today and figured I better clarify. Also, as mentioned on
this list, the BARD Talk web site is a treasure trove of good
information. It's also well organized and well thought out. I think it
will clarify a lot and won't appear as contradictory as separate posts
to a mailing list may seem to be.
The URL for the BARD Talk web site is http://www.bardtalk.com/.

Good News; Got It All Figured Out

2010-04-06 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello list: Well..feeling slightly stupid..but much relieved! The problem
concerning my digital player and cord has nothing to do with the fact that I
have the wrong cable; it's just in knowing how to hook things
up..which..apparently..I didn't! But a friend got me on track (I was trying to
put the drive into the player; then put the cord into the other end of that
drive (duh..there is nothing at the other end; that's why it wouldn't go
there!)..long story short: after what my friend told me last night, I decided
to try it and..it worked! I even was lucky enough (after downloading the
latest edition of Sports Illustrated)..to transfer it to the player; imagine
my joy when (after plugging the cable drive back into the machine; then I hit
the play button..and it actually started playing..I heard Sports Illustrated
for March 29! Oh that felt so good! Again..thanks to all who followed this
thread!

Hello John let me get this straight.
You connect the USB cable in to the port of the cartridge, right?

You can get it at RadioShack also? the USB extenssion cord?

Things like NLS books audio files and so on.
That USB cable is not needed.
The only time you will need to use a USB cable, is when you are
using a cartridge that was specially made for the NLS player.

Hope this helps.

No, the usb cable is to connect the player to your computer in case you
download a book. Otherwise the flash drive connects right to the player
without any cable. The cartridge goes in to the front of the unit.

And it is probably the only accessible recorder on the market that really

Sansa fuse with V1 firmware

2010-04-06 Thread Joe
I'd like to get the Sansa Fuse with the earlier V 1 firmware on it so I can
install rock box and have it talk. Rock box won't work on later versions of
firmware with this MP3 player. Tiger direct has a reconditioned fuse for a good
price of only $39, but they can't say what firmware it has on it so I'd be
taking a chance in getting it and may possibly have to send it back and lose
money in shipping if its the wrong one. Does anyone know where I can get a
Sansa Fuse that would have the V 1 firmware on it at a good price? Thanks, Joe.

Tom, what do you mean it doesn't fit the machine? There's a USB port on the
right hand side of the machine, it's about half way to the back, right
behind the headphone jack. When the machine is shipped, it'll be covered
with a small plastic cap. The cap just pops off, and the flash drive should
plug into that port with no problem. A flash drive can only go in one way,
so if you're having trouble with it, you may want to flip it over. Good
luck.

No, the usb cable is to connect the player to your computer in case you
download a book. Otherwise the flash drive connects right to the player
without any cable. The cartridge goes in to the front of the unit.

If you do, then all you need to do is, plug the flash drive in to

Things like NLS books audio files and so on.
That USB cable is not needed.
The only time you will need to use a USB cable, is when you are

good price of only $39, but they can't say what firmware it has on it so I'd
be taking a chance in getting it and may possibly have to send it back and
lose money in shipping if its the wrong one. Does anyone know where I can get
a Sansa Fuse that would have the V 1 firmware on it at a good price? Thanks,

there's a few multy track recorder like adobe audition, cakewalk sonar,
cool edit pro cakewalk audio pro and more, but you just have to get
scripts for them to be more accessabel with jaws. I have been trying to
use cakewalk sonar le6.0 and I have the j-scripts for it if you decided
to get a coppy of it. I'm using cool edit pro now, but I need scripts for
it now, cuz I can't see to use it like before. I hope I get them soon.

Hi all. How many of you would do multi track recording if it was
accessible. For example, the victor Stream speaks, the Book Sense
speaks,
Olympus ds71 and other units speak, and there are talking watches. We
need
a digital multi track recorder, for recording original music, that
speaks,
so that, for every menu function, a spoken word alerts us. Who would
be

interested in this issue? John Russo

why don't we write Johnny directly giving our name, city and state. This
way when he presents his findings to the companies he can put together a
more formal document. Plus, it would give them an idea how far spread the

Okay now you've made your point clear then yep! I'd certainly buy one
if their was one out there, even though I have my software solutions.

Hello everyone,

I sent a message earlier today about a concept for a multi track
recorder with speech. It would be a stand alone unit, similar to a
Tascam
2488, Korg D3200, etc. For every button you push, or menu for editing
you

move to, it would always speak, to let you know where you are. I've
contacted Tascam, let them know my idea, they're interested, but
wonder how
many blind people would buy one. A stand alone unit would be more
stable
than a Mac or PC based software set up, and much less costly. I'd
like to
compile a list of all interested individuals. If I can show Tascam,
or
Korg, or Yamaha, that such an item would have marketability,
development may

take place. I mentioned Victor Stream and Book Sense and Olympus as
examples. The technology exists, it's just a matter of putting it in
one
unit. We just need to convince the right manufacturer that speech
added to
a multi track recorder is worth their time producing one. I would
also like
to propose this idea to other blind community users groups. The more
blind
individuals alerted to this idea, the more I can show manufacturers
that

this will sell. johnnyru...@windstream.net
