Hi Martin,

here are some more detailed instructions for using Audacity to create the
example you wanted.

1. Open audacity.

2. On the track menu, open the add new sub menu, and choose Audio track
(ctrl+shift+n).

3. Open the Tone generator dialog from the Generate menu. In this dialog,
the duration control is like a spin box. By default, the format is seconds
which are grouped into two groups of three digits, and the default time is
thirty seconds. To change this to one second, press End to move to the last
digit, press left arrow to move to the digit 3, and then type in the digits
0 and 1. Note Jaws then reads out zero zero zero, but that's because the
focus has wrapped around to the first group of three digits.

4. The generated tone is selected, so to deselect this and move the cursor
to the end of this selection, press right arrow.

5. Open the silence generator dialog from the Generator dialog. Although the
default duration is read out as zero, this is a bug, and in fact it's 30
again. So to change it to one, press end to move to the last digit, and
follow the insructions in step 3.

6. The silence is selected. Select all the audio by pressing ctrl + A, and
then choose duplicate from the edit menu. so that you now have two identical
tracks. You can move the focus between the tracks by pressing up arrow and
down arrow.

7. Both tracks are selected, and a time range covering all the audio is
selected. To deslect track 1, move to the first track and press enter, which
toggles the selection of a track. So with track two selected, choose the
Reverse effect from the Effects menu. Track two now contains silence
followed by the tone, rather than the other way round in track one.

8. Set the pan control of track one to fully right, and the pan control of
track two to fully left. To change the pan of the focussed track, press
shift+P which opens a pan dialog. Type in 1 for pan to right, and minus 1
for pan to left.

9. Select all the audio by pressing ctrl+a, and then open the repeat dialog
from the effects menu. specify how many repeats of the selected audio you
want.

10. Press home to move the cursor to the start, and then spacebar to
play/stop.

The Jaws guide I mentioned has more details:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-1.3.8-Guide.html

David.

2009-08-15 Thread Roger Stewart
Well, most of what you want are just Winamp's own hotkeys and will work
whether you use Jaws or anything or no screen reader at all. Up and
Down arrows control voluneand left and right arrow keys control pan. If
Jaws is running the correct script everything should speak and there are
a few extra keys that will set the paning to different values. Open the
Jaws main window, open file menue and go down to Manage Program
Settings. In there you should see Winamp if you've made any change at
all to it. Make sure the checkbox for Winamp is checked and it should
run those settings when Winamp is in focus. And Winamp does need to
have focus for any of the Jaws settings to work. You can run Winamp in
the background while doing other work, but you can't control it unless
it has focus. That could be the problem. Good luck!

RE: Question about Subscribing to a Podcast

2009-08-15 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I have discovered one trick to download iTunes specific podcasts with other
podcatchers like winamp and Juice. If you can find the URL for the podcast,
and if it starts with the string itpc// then you can use the same string
for the URL in Winamp except replace itpc// with http//. Using this
trick, I still have yet to feel a need to install iTunes.

Since the original post wasn't included below, I can't tell if this trick
would work on the podcast in question.

Randy,

Not sure what you're asking, but I believe you want to burn your MP3 files
to DVD discs for backup purposes, right? If so, then you're limited to 4.7
gigs of space on a single layer DVD. If you burn to a dual layer DVD you
have some 8.5 Gigs of room. If you really want to go nuts you can purchase a
blue ray burner which holds 25 gigs per dis, and I believe there might be
some 50 Gig discs being sold now. Keep in mind each disc will be expensive.
Again, this means you need a blue ray burner which will cost you some $200+
possibly. Anyone with updated info is of course more than welcome to share
and educate me a bit. In short, you might want to take your chances with a
bunch of dual layer DVD discs, but honestly, I'd say buy another external
hard drive primarily for your redundancy purposes.

If you Like Streaming Radio, you'll Love moodio!

2009-08-15 Thread Scott Erichsen
Moodio is a portal for mobile phones allowing you to stream any Internet
radio station. It is easy to sign up, and the site is 100% accessible, both
on your PC and phone.

Moodio has a large database of streaming radio stations from which you can
choose. If a station you want isn't in the database, you can add it with an
easy form. Once you've added the stations you want, you log in with your
phone and your list of stations is available to you.

The service transcodes the stream for you, and sends it to your phone. There
are two reasons why this is very cool. First, my one ongoing annoyance with
Symbian is its lack of streaming Windows Media support. But with Moodio, any
Windows Media stream is available to you on your phone, as our Shoutcast
streams and a wide range of other formats.

Second, even if your phone supports some of these formats out of the box,
Moodio might save you money. If you have a cap on the amount of data you can
use each month, Moodio can send you the stream at a lower bit rate than the
original stream. let's take the stream for The Legend as an example. It is a
128KBPS MP3 stream, which uses about 15 K per second. In a little over 1
minute, you'll have used a meg. The default bit rate from Moodio is 24KBPS
parametric stereo. For the same stream transcoded by Moodio after a minute,
you'll have used only 180K. So you are getting the same stream, using about
a fifth of the data. Now because of the transcoding, and the lower bit rate,
it's not going to sound as good as the original. But the bit rate of the
stream you receive is configurable, so if quality rather than data
consumption is your aim, crank up the bit rate.

I'm thrilled to have found this, it really does rock.

Subject: If you Like Streaming Radio, you'll Love moodio!

Houdy,

The first file can be backed up on one single DVD. As for the remaining 25
gigs you'll have to back those up on 8 separate discs.
