The USB dongle plugs in to any available port and the receiver wires up via RCA

I'd just love, like yourself, to keep it simple, but it simply isn't going

Good quality audio from computers, TV's and interfacing that with AV units
or amps has historically resulted in multiple complexities and it's only
people like us who may know a little about these things that gain the
 benefits.

One day you will with no understanding whatsoever about technology , be
able to play audio from any device through your home system, without even
 thinking about it.

I really couldn't tell you what was the best method of drawing all these
threads together and with every year, it's getting even more complicated.

Wouldn't it be nice to buy a good computer with high quality sound and you
could simply download audio from Itunes or otherwise, listen to it and
edit it and post it again without any effort whatsoever!

 Hi Andy,
That's a thought which I'll have to ponder some more. I know desktop
speakers for PC are nearly always rubbish but the ones Dane linked to are
an exception. But a separate amp or receiver for my PC is a possibility.

My PC is in a den too as my wife banned PCs from the living room so
instead I've got a high end set up in the Livingroom similar to yours
 minus the PC.

Believe it or not in my PC room/den I used to have 2 PCs with 2 sound
cards each going through a sound mixer and then output through an
amplifier and stereo speakers. That was in the days when I used to
broadcast on internet radio. The 2nd PC was a backup for when things went
wrong with my main machine which sometimes happened. Anyway, I've
simplified things since then getting rid of redundant equipment. I now
have one of the few self-amplified 5.1 systems that can plug into a sound
card without an amplifier. I also use a splitter to a little transmitter
that lets me use the old-style wireless headphones and portable speakers
so I can have audio from my PC in other rooms. The Logitec Z5500 5.1
speakers sound reasonable for their price and age but as they're quite
 elderly I want something better.

I was hoping to keep it simple but if I wanted to keep a 5.1 set up in my
PC den you are probably right and I would have to think about an amp or
receiver. It would also allow me to get the best out of my small
collection of PC-based HD recordings. To be

be a big up-grade. I think they have just done the stratus so it won't be long.

Re: bluetooth problem: one for the books

2014-06-15 Thread Kulvinder Singh Bhogal
Hi there

Latency is par for the course where bluetooth is concerned.

Afterall the signal has to be encoded and then transmitted to the receiving
device.

I’m afraid that it is the way it is and as far as I can see, there is nothing,
at this time, that would work any better.

Sorry that i can’t be of any more help than that.

Subject: bluetooth problem: one for the books

Hello, Everyone,

I have been involved in the audio field since about 1947!! (Yes, that's right.)
This odd situation is simply unknown to me!

I have a mixer which feeds a transmitter. The receiver is attached to a PA
system. This works as it should, but it's a bit cumbersome. I have a tiny
bluetooth transmitter and a receiver. My plan was to replace my present setup
with the bluetooth gear.

The system works but not as expected. There's about a half second latency
between the transmitted signal and when it's received.

I substituted a Victor Stream for the mixer and the sound was fine. Well, I
couldn't check about latency.

I found this out when talking into a mike and hearing the PA system coming back
to me.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this rather bizarre situation.

Joe Giovanelli

Re: Sample Of Polk Audio Speakers

2014-05-25 Thread Kulvinder Singh Bhogal
I have to say that the Jambox sounds good but to describe it as a toy is just a
little harsh.

The other thing I would say about your speakers is that providing a sample file
is never a true reflection of what the actual quality of a speaker system is
since the listener is playing the sound through their own system and not
hearing it through the speakers that have been sampled.

Okay, this seems to have worked though I'll let you be the ultimate judge.

Here's a sample of what my Polk Audio bookshelf speakers sound like, they're
not the top of the line speakers from Polk but for $400 they're not bad
 either.

I've provided 2 samples, they're the same but in different formats, the
first in FLAC and the second in MP3.

Perseption of sound and quality is subjective and therefore I tend to go with
what I like the sound of. It depends on whether or not you like bassy or toppy

Yep okay, call me harsh and I can understand your point but I believe in being
frank and my description of the Jawbone Jambox as a toy is I believe well
justified, I owned one and I can't tell you the pleasure I had in throwing that
device into the bin.

The hands free speakerphone on that device sounds God damn awful! the problem
again comes down to the narrow band width of Bluetooth 2.0 and there's really
no excuse for that given the price of one of these things, the standard used
should have been at least Bluetooth 3.0, that was around at the time.

As far as the sound for music goes? I think a friend of mine summed it up
beautifully when he said that the Jawbone Jambox sounded Too Boxy.

In all events we've moved on since the days of Jambox and Jawbone, one can buy
a far better sounding system for Bluetooth when it comes to music and something
far better for a speakerphone at fractions of the price.

I have connected them to the line in of my soundcard but don't get any

All the volumes etc. are set properly because other devices connected work.

Hi, list.
I'm using Winamp5.6.2X on a machine running Windows-XP-Home-SP3.
Can I copy the bookmarks file to another Winamp of the same version, running on
another machine with Windows7? If yes, what is the name of the file that keeps
bookmarks?

Thanks!

You should be able to check for updates for the stream and the companian from
the conpanian itself.

You will find it all in the help menu.

There are, however, no more updates for the old stream.

Humanware have said that once any old stock of the old stream has been sold,
that will it the end of it.

I am going to by mine next month if all goes wel. I think the new
stream could've been a bit better, but there are enough bennifits for
me at least. First off, the old stream does only charch on the
adapter. No USB charching of any kind is supported. And that is sick
in the time we live in. So now the new stream does not just support
charching via USB, but it also charch with a pere USB adapter and only
have one port wich dubble as both an charching and connection port.
The thing I like about the new interface however, is that you can now
charch and listen wile its connected to the pc. Connect it wile the
unit is turned on, and it will charch and stil be able to play and be
usable. Turn it off and connect and turn back on again and the pc will
see it as a mass storage device like the old stream did. I am also
sick and tired of stupid Samantha and tom drink to much wisky and so
the newer acapela voices are more than usable. They really are what I
can use for long hours of reading. I love the fact that now on the new
stream you can set the sleep timer in custom incriments according to
your set time, and not only the presets they always allowed. And the
way the clock works is also very unique. They seprit the clock menus
from the regular player menu. That is ausom! Also the fact that all
features are now available on the unit without the need for a softpack
installation. And now it can do line in recording. It no longer
support recording of 3gp but mp3 and wave only. That is just fine. As
far as I no about the wifi situation, you have to either type in the
network info manually, or scan for the network and add it that way.
You might be able to add an incrippted network but I doubt it can
sync. Although you can confirm that with humanware. Maybe someone on
the stream list will no more there. And they might also help with the
nls thing, I never saw any notes regarding the presents of such
adapter like the old one. And I'm not in the US, and I didn't see the
player yet. Hope this help a bit.

I've never had a Victor Stream, but I do have an NLS player and the same
holds true: if I put the thumb drive in (and the player is fully charged)
it'll give me a reading of 10 hours, whereas if I have the cartridge in, it
then gives me 29 hours! So yes..it would appear that flash drives _do_
drain more power!

Hi, recently i have been playing books on a flash drive connected to
my victor stream with the short lead. i noticed that i wasn't getting
the usual playing time. i assumed that the battery was failing, so i
bought a new battery. i found the same result with the new battery. i
sent a message to humanware about this, asking whether the flash drive
would take up more current. below is their answer. incidently, i have
gone back to playing from the sd card, and am now getting the amout of
playing time i was used to. brian.
 Brian

It does depend on the drive itself but generally most flash drives
will cause the stream to use more power when accessing them.

 Kind Regards

I'm looking for a USB audio device that has adequate options for inputting mics
and line level inputs in stereo. Inputs such as quarter-inch, XLR, RCA,
eighth-inch. Professional is not necessary, but something that is quite good
quality. Can anybody recommend? Thanks.

Hello everyone. I'm a brand new subscriber. I just purchased a Dell Latitude
5530 laptop. It's a very nice machine but it only has one jack for the
Microphone, Headphone, Line in and Line out. If I want to connect a headset
that contains separate microphone and headphone plugs, what kind of cable do
I need? Also, the sound card doesn't contain a What U Hear option so I
probably need a mixer to mix the audio from JAWS and a microphone, etc. I
don't think I need a real elaborate one. Do any of you have recommendations?

Thanks so much.

Hi, I posted this to the Winamp for the Blind list yesterday but got no
responses. Not sure if that list is still operating. Anyway, it was doing
it last week, but now when I select all the tracks in a CD I've ripped,
Winamp does not automatically advance to the next track when I start
playing the selected tracks. I know they're all selected, because when I
hit b, Winamp will advance to the next track and start playing it. But
when I just let it play, it stops at the end of the track it's currently
playing. I've been through the Preferences, but I don't see anything that
I recognize as something that will fix this. Any advice? As I said, it was
doing it last week. I have no idea what has changed since then.

Thanks much.

Internet providers pull the plug on downloaders

letter in the mail for that Steely Dan album you downloaded, you might not
necessarily be quite off the hook.

Internet providers to start policing the web July 12

Published: 15 March, 2012, 20:49

TAGS:Scandal, Politics, Internet, Information Technology, USA

Some of the biggest Internet service providers in America plan to adopt
policies that will punish customers for copyright infringement, and one of
the top trade groups in the music biz announced this week that it could
begin as soon as this summer.

The chief executive officer of the Recording Industry Association of
America
told an audience of publishers on Wednesday that a plan carved out last
year

to help thwart piracy is expected to prevail and be put in place by this
summer. RIAA CEO Cary Sherman was one of the guest speakers among a New
York

panel this week and he confirmed that, at this rate, some of the most
powerful Internet providers in America should have their new policies on
the

books by July 12, 2012.

Last year, Time Warner, Verizon, ATT, Comcast, Cablevision Systems and
other Internet service providers proposed best practice recommendations
that

they suggested would help curb copyright crimes on the Web. The end result
largely settled on consisted of a graduate response approach, a plan
that

would mean culprits could be issued a series of warnings for illegally
downloading suspect material which, after a certain number of offenses,
would lead to mitigation measures, connection speed throttling and
termination of service.

We anticipate that very few subscribers, after having received multiple
alerts, will persist (or allow others to persist) in the content theft,
the

Center for Copyright Information said in an official statement last summer
as plans were first publicized. Now nearly a year after developments made
by

the big ISPs were first discussed, the RIAA's Sherman says that online
censorship sanctioned by corporate conglomerates such as Time Warner and
Verizon are practically set in stone.

Discussing the road to realizing how to implement the policies, Sherman
briefly touched on the technical aspects of the plan this week during the
panel. Each ISP has to develop their infrastructure for automating the
system, Sherman said. They need this for establishing the database so
they

can keep track of repeat infringers, so they know that this is the first
notice or the third notice. Every ISP has to do it differently depending
on
the architecture of its particular network. Some are nearing completion
and

others are a little further from completion.

So what does this mean for you? If you're an Internet user in America,
almost certainly something significant. Between Time Warner, Verizon,
ATT,
Comcast and Cablevision, those ISPs alone accounted for around 51 percent
of
the market in America back in 2008. Figures from June 2010 collected by
the

United Nation's ITU division suggests that there are around 240 million
Internet users now in the US, which means more than three-fourths of the
country's total population. With those big ISPs only thriving since their
last figures were disclosed, 51 percent coverage of the market today would
mean that around 120 million users can expect to fall under the umbrella
of
a massive campaign that could soon see half of the country at risk of
having

their Internet shut off.

As RT reported last year, a flip of the kill-switch is indeed an option
that

ISPs can take if they decide they find their customers at fault. That
doesn't mean it's the be-all-end-all response, though. Under the
six-strike policy discussed last year, each alleged instance of
copyright

infringement would prompt the ISP to reach out to its customer in question
and inform them that they have detected a violation of US law. Strikes one
through four would constitute email warnings of increasing severity, but
five through six can come with legal action and end with the termination
of

service and potentially time behind bars. Although cooperating ISPs said
last year that they would suspend service after a certain number of
infringements, today they are hesitant to announce permanently cancelling
any accounts - but merely putting them on hold while users respond to
their

Just a thought though, are you sure that your files are playing at the

Hi kulvinder, yes they are playing at the right speed. i have been
speaking to humanware on the phone, and they say that they are aware
that there is a bug in the latest version of the software. also,
they said that it is the tone control that one has to reduce to zero
if one wants to change the file formatt. they also said, that i
should transfer the files to the music folder and away from other
books. what i am playing, is the foundation trilogy by asimov. it is
an eight part play series. i have made the transfer, and now it is
playing in stereo. someone asked, if this was off topic that we are
discussing. this is pc audio, and the victor stream plays audio
files, so i cannot see why messages about victor stream should not be
acceptable on this list. any way, we have now gone as far as we can
with this, especially as humanware say they are aware of the bug, and
it will be rectified in the next upgrade. thanks to you who tried to
help me. brian.

Hi to all,
I was looking around in my CDex settings and found some options I was not
sure which one to choose.
In the CD drive settings I found a combo box that lets you set the rip
method.
By default, standard is chosen, but here are the other choices.

* Paranoia, overlay only
* Paranoia, no verify
* Paranoia, no scratch repair
*Paranoia, full

Basically you have standard and paranoia as your choices.
But with paranoia, you can turn off some of its features, or leave it at
paranoia full, which would include all paranoia features.
I am just looking to get the best rip I can with as few as errors as
possible.
I do have the check box checked for jeter errors, but wondered if using the
paranoia rip method would also help.
Could someone tell me what it means to verify when ripping a CD, and what
overlay is?

Besides using the standard ripping method, I was considering trying the
paranoia, no verify or the paranoia full.

But I just need some information about these settings first.

Thanks for any help.
Chris

It shouldn't really matter these days what speed you use.

Software is better at handling higher speeds than it used to be in the early

There are people who still swear that using a lower speed is better for

Hope this helps.

Hey Guys,
When ripping does it matter if you set your cd rom to rippe at a max of 8x
verses 4x in terms of quality? I am using winamp. I have noticed that when
using 8x, winamp always doesn't rippe at 8x, I notice that it will ripp at
6.9x, 7.6x, or even 5x. When I used 4x though, it seamed that it was always
at around 4x or 3.8x or so. Thanks!

Hello Kulvinder,
First, thank you for the compliment!
I haven't always been a blind man.
That happened to me when I was in my early 20's.
Shortly before I became a DJ, I worked in my dad's TV/radio repair shop as a
little TV/radio repair technician when I was a small boy.
Just about everything that I know about electronics, I learned the hard way.
Now to answer your question, yes you can run the headphone jack to an audio
mixer.
But even with that, you will still get amplifier noise.
The mixer itself, is as the headphone jack except way quieter.
You have 75 to 90 DB less of a noise floor then what you have with the
headphone jack on your portable stereo.
Inside your portable stereo, your headphone jack is intercepting your loud
speakers.
When you plug in a pare of headphones, there is a switch that turns the loud
speakers off.
When that happens, the power that once went to your loud speakers, is now
going to your headphones.
All depending on how high the wattage is, say 5 watts per channel.
There are a pare of 1 watt resisters hooked up in series between the
amplifier and your headphones.
They are there for 2 reasons.
#1 So that the loudness doesn't damage your hearing.
#2. And so that the power from the amplifier doesn't blow out the voice
coils in your headphones.
When you unplug the headphones, that switch turns your loud speakers back
on.
That is how it works!
However, those resisters don't and won't keep amplifier noise from passing
from the headphone jack to your sound card and or any preamplifier you plug
it in too.
Long story short, you will still get the amplifier noise either way.
I hope this info helps you all a whole bunch.
My best regards.
  John.

True, can't argue with that. However, if a good mixer is hooked up
 between
the computer and hifi, then surely some of the problem with amplifier
 noise
 can be reduced, can't it?

 I bowe to your knowledge.

 Hello Kulvinder,
That's what I told Randy earlier this morning.
If those jacks are line out, then you can hook it up to your computer's
 sound card without any problem.
But if they happen to be line in, then the only option is using the
 headphone jack.
But however, that won't work to well for you.
 You will get amplifier noise.
It will distort especially if the volume is turned up way to high.
  John.

Yeh, sorry about that, what you need to do is connect your hifi with
line-out sockets if you have them on the back of the hifi, that is if you
want to have the audio from the hifi to go to the computer.

Auxillery jacks are input only. they are there in case you wish to run
 something
like a second tape deck or cd player through the system. You could for
 instance run
a line from your speaker out on your computer to the auxillery and hav
 the
 audio from
the computer go through the stereo.

The simple answer is yes but make sure that all the levels are set so that
they aren't too hi as this could damage your equipment.

Re: Making audio CDs question

2007-12-28 Thread Kulvinder Singh Bhogal
Hi there

Yes you can burn these files on to a CD. You can also edit the files with
something like Goldwave or Sound forge to put the silence that you want.

Hope this is of some help to you.

Hi,

I want to make an audio CD and haven't done this before. If I have wave
files will I be able to burn these to CD with the CD burning wizard (that
comes up when you right click the CD drive and choose write these files to
CD)?

Also, presumably I should add some silence to the end of each track? These
are recordings I've made from the radio and have chopped off the unnecessary
ends; so do I need to put some silence at the end of each track so they
don't all play as one long sound in a CD player?

Thanks,
Catherine
