RE: NLS CARTRIDGES

2010-04-15 Thread Jason Boston
The only limit on a thumb drive that works is the size of the thumb drive.
Each book from the library is a different size. So if you add up the size of
x number of books and that size is still less than your thumb drive, then
all those you added up will fit. I've had 14 books on one 8 gig thumb drive
and still had about 4 gigs left.

I'd check out the BARD Talk web site, and the devices page in particular.
It's at http://www.bardtalk.com/players.php.

It lists two companies selling the 2G blank cartridges, both for around $12.
APH at
https://shop.aph.org/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001;
catalogId=11051krypto=w%2FE%2FZ6s4BbNqIwT7%2B76kXdN7nasE4VHlirTe1MM%2FZpvKn

https://secure2.convio.net/psb/site/Ecommerce/987768074?VIEW_PRODUCT=truepr
oduct_id=6501store_id=1101. Perkins also sells the corresponding cable to
attach to your PC although any USB extension cable, that will fit the
cartridge, will work.

Also, I think the blank cartridge will hold as many books as you can fit on
2G. I've had 5 myself plus a handful of MP3 files. I've had more than that
on a 16G USB flash drive, so I don't think there's any limit at four.

 Hello all list members,
For anyone that wants to know, you can put up to 4 books on a 2 GB NLS
cartridge that was especially made for the digital talking book player.
But the people at your library, will tell you that you can only put 1 book

 on them.
I found that, not to be true.

I'm not sure what you already have Tom since you didn't include the
message
you're replying to, but if you're talking about the cable needed to
connect

a blank NLS cartridge to your PC then you need a standard USB extension
cable. This will have a full sized male connector at one end and a full
size
female connector at the other end. Note that due to the housing on the
NLS
cartridge, many USB extension cables aren't going to work, and you may
find
it best to buy a cable from ILA, APH or Perkins especially designed to
work

with the NLS cartridges.

I know this has all been discussed on this list before, but I just saw
this
message today and figured I better clarify. Also, as mentioned on this
list,

the BARD Talk web site is a treasure trove of good information. It's also
well organized and well thought out. I think it will clarify a lot and
won't
appear as contradictory as separate posts to a mailing list may seem to
be.

Hello Tom,
If it's a standard USB flash drive, it will plug right in to the USB port
that's located on the right side of the player.
I was the one that said that you'll have to wait a month to get the
cartridges from AMERICAN PRINTING HOUSE.

I called them Friday morning to place a credit card order for 2 of them.
I was told by the rep, that they were on back order.
She tried to talk me in to placing the order anyway, but that didn't make
any since to me to charge that to my credit card then having to wait a
month before I have them in my hands.
If this other website that I've been hearing about has them in stock, I
will get them from there.

Only one question though, do they take credit card orders over the phone?
My best regards.
John.

Wheredo you download updates to your digital talking book player?]

I'm not sure what you already have Tom since you didn't include the
message you're replying to, but if you're talking about the cable
needed to connect a blank NLS cartridge to your PC then you need a
standard USB extension cable. This will have a full sized male
connector at one end and a full size female connector at the other
end. Note that due to the housing on the NLS cartridge, many USB
extension cables aren't going to work, and you may find it best to buy
a cable from ILA, APH or Perkins especially designed to work with the
 NLS cartridges.

I know this has all been discussed on this list before, but I just saw
this message today and figured I better clarify. Also, as mentioned on
this list, the BARD Talk web site is a treasure trove of good
information. It's also well organized and well thought out. I think it
will clarify a lot and won't appear as contradictory as separate posts
to a mailing list may seem to be.

Okay..here's the deal on the drive: one end is rounded (it apparently
needs to be square)..in any case, no matter which way I turn that drive,
it _will not_ go in! As far as I can tell, there's no cap or anything

Tom, what do you mean it doesn't fit the machine? There's a USB port on
the

right hand side of the machine, it's about half way to the back, right
behind the headphone jack. When the machine is shipped, it'll be covered
with a small plastic cap. The cap just pops off, and the flash drive
should
plug into that port with no problem. A flash drive can only go in one
way,

so if you're having trouble with it, you may want to flip it over. Good
luck.

2010-04-05 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

Hello Tom,
If it's a standard USB flash drive, it will plug right in to the USB port
that's located on the right side of the player.
I was the one that said that you'll have to wait a month to get the
cartridges from AMERICAN PRINTING HOUSE.

I called them Friday morning to place a credit card order for 2 of them.
I was told by the rep, that they were on back order.
She tried to talk me in to placing the order anyway, but that didn't make
any since to me to charge that to my credit card then having to wait a month
before I have them in my hands.
If this other website that I've been hearing about has them in stock, I will
get them from there.

Only one question though, do they take credit card orders over the phone?
My best regards.
John.

needed to connect a blank NLS cartridge to your PC then you need a
standard USB extension cable.

A flash drive can only go in one way,
so if you're having trouble with it, you may want to flip it over. Good
luck.

Hello Tom,
If you feel the right side of your player, you will find a headphone jack.
Right behind it, is the USB port. It does have a plastic cover over it.
If you remove that cover, the USB port will be exposed.
Right there, is where you will plug in your new thumb drive.
Hope this helps.
My best regards.

Hi Tom.

Sounds like you got a USB drive like I have. Grab each end of it, and
gently pull. You should get one part that protects the USB port, and the
other part, which is the drive. Also, grab the ends so you have the flat
part between your fingers.

Hope this works for you. By the way, APH won't have the cartridges in stock
until the end of May, at least that's what I heard.

Don't work too hard.

Can any of you describe what the NLS talking book cartridges
look like and what kind of USB cable do I need to use to
connect this to my computer's USB port in order to transfer
the downloaded books. I understand it will show up as a
removable drive in My Computer or Computer area. No problem
there. No problem moving/copying it to the cartridge and then
inserting the cardtridge into the NLS Talking Book player. I
called my local library to see if the player was available

podcast about this player on blindcooltech.com if you want to
learn more about it. Right now I am waiting for the unit and
never touch one of these cartridges.

When I bought the cartridges from ILA they were 1GB in size as far as the
capacity went. The cost was $14.95 if Iremember co5rrectly.

The APH cartridges are 2 GB in capacity and cost about $12.00

The APH cartridges are sent free matter.

I like to use the cartridges instead of a jump drive so I won't rip the jump
drive out of the player by mistake when carying the uhnit.

The cartridges are safely inside the unit when installed.

I also would like to do this. I would like
to do what was once called overdubbing,
add-a-track, sound-on-sound, or multimle
recording. What software would anyone suggest?
Thank you.

Well, what is your friend saying about Adobe Audition and
such, in relation to this subject? That doesn't seem to be a
pertinent part of the mix here, does it?

I understand, but the way it came through was a bit puzzling!

Thanks for the clarification, Tom!

the NLS players and the cartridges.

I ordered 2 blank NLS talking book cartridges from APH.org
today. I will use these cartridges to download talking books
and magazines from NLS online service. I don't like to use
USB flash drives.

called my local library to see if the player was available
and it was. I got the advanced model. I heard a very good
podcast about this player on blindcooltech.com if you want to
learn more about it. Right now I am waiting for the unit and
never touch one of these cartridges.

Sure you can do the cartridge thing but why? Just as easy to have a flash
drive I'd think. I'd think APH would include whatever you'd need ccord wise
with the cartridges though.

Independent Living Aids, on Long Island, sells the connector for an extra
cost. I haven't compared ILA's and APH's prices for the cartridge. Nor do I
endorse ILA over APH; just pass along the information.
