It stopped, with more semi-blind clicking. I think (but do not know) that blowing up one of the faces to fill the window, or 100% (not sure which) finally made it stop. On most Mac software command-period or command-shift-period stops a process. Leave it to Adobe to ignore useful convention.

I think there is something in settings to tell it whether to find all of the faces. At some point face detection completely broke on my system such that if it tries to detect faces it crashes lightroom, and if you restart lightroom it will go back to trying to detect faces and will immediately
