I tested crop mode as follows:
K-1 with Sigma APS-C lens 8-16mm @ 16 mm
(@ 16mm the Sigma covers FF)
3 pictures of bookshelves filled with books:
FF gives 44.5 MB
APS-C mode gives 22.2 MB
1:1 mode gives 45 MB
So Mark Roberts suggestion is right: the camera adds just a cropping
specification
I saw the advantage of square mode, in using the full image circle of
APS-C lenses, without the need of going to FF and cropping in post
processing. As such the file size would increase w.r.t. APS-C mode. If
it is not like that, I will be disappointed.

FWIW. the square crop mode is now in place, which I guess would save a
small amount of memory if shooting in raw and you want square images.
Does it really record fewer pixels? Or just add a cropping
specification to the raw file?
At the very
It's in the supplemental manual:

It only works in single frame shooting mode, and disable shake reduction.

The thing I was most excited about was electronic shutter in Live View,
it might make LV a lot more useful.
I installed the software, went into menu, and the item
LV Electronic Shutter
is in menu "Camera"
