Markus,
My Tokina zoom suggestion is more practical than optical.
Its weight is not much different from the Pentax 70-210/4 in
that they're both basically

Hi Markus,
I'll preface this by saying that I've only had an SLR for less than four
years and am far from being an expert on the subject. I have taken a lot
of bird photos in that time though, and none of them were taken with
lenses longer then 200mm (here are some recent ones

I would try both the Tamron mirror lens and the M 200/4 coupled with
the A2X converter. Or sell them all and buy an A 400/5.6. The latter is
a very good lens that is frequently available for only $300 or slightly
more. It will focus close enough to allow full frame bird shots. I

The real question is How much are you willing to spend?
For a something in the order of US$300 - US$500 you can get a Sigma
300/4 or 100-300/4 which is a damn good lens for the money. For
somewhere over US$1000 you might be able to find a Pentax F, or FA
300/4.5 or maybe an A* 300/4. All

the birds.

Thanks! And keeping this on-topic with the current thread... This
particular shot was an extreme example: Sigma 300/4 with 2x and 1.4x
TCs stacked on the *ist D.
Try Tokina.
80-200/2.8 from $200 to $300
400/5.6 commonly $200
And for something more novel and still inexpensive,
check out some less-common 300mm mirror lenses with a T mount.
Then use a good 1.4x to keep a quality picture.
