Re: An opinion: How much better can things get?

2017-01-10 Thread P. J. Alling
I don't know. I think we're spoiled. Sure small sensor cameras lack
dynamic range, when compared to larger formats, but compare any format
larger than 1" to 35mm slide film. Even 35mm reversal film didn't have
13+ stops of dynamic range.

i think the smaller-sensor cameras still need a new sensor technology
to surpass their limits in dynamic range and low light capabilities;
plus EVF display tech could still improve, along with the
mechanics/ergonomics of things like focus peaking, wireless transfer,
organizing photos (on camera)

Very little problems with my manual cameras since 1970's but some of
the AF gear i bought, SF-1 and PZ-1 gave me fits. Most of my Pentax
digital gear had problems as did one of my Nikon's the dreaded D2H,
the Edsel of Nikon's. My problem is i have mostly consumer grade
Pentax leses and for the most part are ok, but i still get a more OOF
or softer images than i think i should. I have more "pro" lenses for
my nikon equipment and the AF is lighting fast with them. Very few
missed shots. I have spent a lot on my pentax gear hoping the next
investment will fix things but alas not to be. I fear the D7200 will
be my next purchase and pull the 35-70 and 70-200 VR back out.
I'd like to go to a Fuji interchangeable lens system but would have to
start form scratch.

Should clarify my 3 primes the fa 100 the fa 77 and the dfa 50 have
been fine tuned and do a great job. I have yet to fine tune my 55-300
which is eq to my 50-200 until i go past 200 on the 55-300 and my

The AF in the K5 very nearly chased me away from Pentax. In fact, it was
 one
of the reasons I invested rather heavily in Fuji. I was tired of cameras
that plain and simply didn't work. The problem with the K5 was that Hoya
 was
try9ng to eke every penny they could out of their unwanted camera
 division,
and every component of the K5 was compromised. If you had a camera that
worked, you were golden, but the problems with the K5 were legion, the AF
 being front and center.

Ricoh, in their wisdom, corrected seemingly every problem that Hoya built
into the Pentax line during their abysmal ownership.
The K1 AF actually works, and works very well indeed. I don't know if
 it's
up to Nikon D5 standards, but it is fast, and more to the point, when it
says it has locked focus, it means it has locked onto the subject, not
 some
point in space a few feet in front of or behind.

Re: If I upgrade from my K5 ... lenses and IR conversion question

2017-01-10 Thread P. J. Alling
For demosaicing(sp???) to work, the firmware has to take into account
the color filters over each photosite. If you could remover the Bayer
filter, (which I think is impossible, based on my knowledge of how it's
applied), the camera would need completely rewritten firmware, possibly
even new hardware in the image processing engine. The image with
standard firmware will be subtly off, now that didn't stop photographs
in the past recording some version of reality film ortho film, but the
color and luminance values will be off, and you won't get the advantage
of the higher resolution since the camera will still process the image
to try to create a rgb image.

I would be just as interesting if not more interesting to me to have
the Bayer filter removed (is that even possible?). That would make
for a cool B camera. don't know if the software would support this
kind of image though (in raw).

I forgot to mention that the 28-105 is arguably the sharpest kit lens I've
ever used. I picked it up because I couldn't afford the 24-70, already had
a tammy 28-75, and didn't have a weather proof standard range zoom.

In decent light, I'm quite happy to leave it on my camera. I don't know how
it compares, other than speed and cost with the 24-70.

Also, when I got my K-1 I had a K-3 and a K-3II which made a nice pair for
when I wanted to use two bodies. I held off on selling one, but these days
only use one of them when I want to mount the 18-250 to have a small wide
range camera to carry around, I should do something with the K-3. One
option, and probably the smart one, would be to sell it. Another option
would be to have the IR block filter removed.

This is a topic that comes up every now and then, and the list of shops
doing it seems to change on a year by year basis. Has anyone had the
conversion done lately? Who did it, are you happy with their work and what
did it cost?

Yes, I feel your pain because I've felt the same way since I bought my
first SLR: a Pentax ME-Super with a 50mm 1.4 lens. While it seemed to
be a great body, too many of my pics were not exposed right. When I
borrowed a friends Nikon FE (or FM) + 50mm 1.4 lens, I was shocked at
the perfect exposures and beautiful renditions. I almost jumped to
Nikon, but the system was so much more expensive to my college tastes
than Pentax. So here I am
