It is pretty feeble. Good enough for a casual lock up in a good neighborhood as
long as the bike is in sight, like when I stop for lunch at the cafe and am
sitting outside a few feet from the bike.

I have a much heavier duty U-Lock and cable for more serious security for when
I go a bit further and need to secure it. It locks both wheels and frame. On
such occasions, I usually unlock and remove the battery too, and take the
controller/computer with me.

LOL! Indeed they do. :-)

But, funny as they look, they're the reason this bike is so darn good to ride.
They're not the stock tires: like most bikes in this class, the stock tires are
more off-road/fire trail oriented knobbies that improve traction on loose dirt.
I liked the bike on the first ride, but the stock knobbies were noisy and
dragged a bit. I had these put on before I picked it up—the bike shop owner
hadn't realized they existed when I pointed them out in his catalog. When I
went to pick it up, he looks at me and says, "If I'd known about these tires
before, I'd have fitted the bike with them before going to the expo two
weekends ago. I could have sold a half dozen bikes with them on it!"

Compared to the stock tires, these roll beautifull, seemingly frictionless over
any surface. You float and flow along, turn and corner like a motorcycle, stop
like a motorcycle. I find they are so efficient that, even with my
still-recovering legs, I have the electric-assist power OFF or use the lowest
possible setting most of the time.

They attract a remarkable amount of attention. Every time I go out for a ride
and stop somewhere, people come over and look, ask what it is, where did I get
it, what does it cost, etc. Way more than the other fat bikes that pull up with
their knobby tires…

Well, I'm off for another ride… Still finishing up my 'week of polaroid photos'
so I've got the SX-70 loaded and with me.

I have had to stop putting out feeders, except for hummingbird feeders.

The deer rise up on their back legs to butt the feeders, and spill out the
seed so they can eat it. Even feeders that are too high for them to reach
(and therefore too high to easily refill) attract the deer to clean up
underneath the feeders after the Jays and Cardinals pick out the choice
morsels and scatter the rest. Once in the yard, they eat every tender shoot
on every bush, and tempt my dog to chase them into the neighboring woods.

usually upload a group of images at once, to a gallery, but seldom have
time to immediately put in the titles, links and other info on all of them
at once. I can never find the link or menu to allow me to go back and edit
the data on the images I previously posted. I find that a real
inconvenience.

Re: PESO: For Ken Waller

2017-04-23 Thread Daniel J. Matyola

Re: Up periscope! (for a question)

2017-04-23 Thread Mark C

Hi Rick -

Does the lens do this on multiple bodies? You might want to verify that
it is the lens and not the camera. My venerable Pz-1p developed the same
problem with some lenses. It appears that the shaft from the body is not
linking up to the lens right. It's only a couple of lenses and they work
well on other bodies, but consistently falter on the Pz-1p (though like
in your case, re-mounting the lens or shaking it gets things working
again, for a while.)

Good luck with the home renovations - we replaced all of our galvanized
plumbing and Knob and tube wiring last year. Lots of dust, noise and
disruption.

Where should I send it for repair? Precision? KEH? Somewhere else?

My photo position would normally frighten the birds, but they’ve grown
accustomed to me. It took a lot of time, but they’re now used to seeing me and
the camera in the yard about 20 feet from the feeders and close to the trees
where they alight. Every time I go out there they scatter, and I have to wait
about 20 minutes for them to remember that I’m part of the landscape.

Re: PESO: For Ken Waller

2017-04-23 Thread Stanley Halpin
We have six feeders. Two are the standard plastic tubular type with a few perch
on the sides and a tray at the bottom. Filled with what our feed store calls
“cardinal mix.” These attracts cardinals, doves, sparrows, redwing blackbirds,
grosbeak, red bellied woodpecker, blue jay and occasionally a variety of finch.
The squirrels and turkeys used to raid these but I have figured out effective
defense mechanisms.
A third feeder with the same mix but only a small perch at the bottom attracts
the tufted titmice, nuthatch, house finch, purple finch, gold finch. And a
swarm of chickadees.
The fourth feeder is a perforated aluminum tube for peanuts for the clinging
birds. Hairy and Downey woodpeckers, Nuthatch, and occasional others.
Then a fifth, for hummingbirds. And a sixth, for Orioles. We get both Baltimore
and Barn Orioles.

We’ve tried the suet feeders but our local birds don’t seem too interested.

We site the feeders with the following in mind: keeping the squirrels out,
keeping the turkeys out, keeping the feeders the right distance from our
windows to minimize bird strikes, and giving us a nice view so we can enjoy the
visitors. Oh, and photography would be nice but I don’t have positions that
give me a good sightline without disturbing the birds.

The turkeys learned that when I open the people-door out of the garage, that I
might well be carrying bird food. And they would come running. And a few
figured out that when the feeders were full, they could jump up, hit the bottom
of the feeders with the top of their head, jostle enough seed to the ground for
them to then find and eat… Some feeders now have fences on the ground around
the bottom so the turkeys can’t get underneath, others have been raised just
high enough so that even the best jumper can’t quite get to them.

2017-04-23 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
hey Ken,

Do you consider autofocus cheating? Autoexposure? Auto white balance? AutoISO?
:-)

An electric pedal assist was essential. I have a lovely pedal bike that I
couldn't ride anymore … after having the hip replacement and knee repair, and
27 years of osteoarthritic degradation of the hip joint twisting my gait and
ruining my leg muscles. I could no longer even swing my leg over the saddle to
get on the bike, never mind how exhausted ten minutes of riding would make me.
No progress…

All of that is changing. Riding these ebikes has rejuvenated my legs to the
point where I now take the pedal bike out and can ride for an hour or more.
Beyond that, I can go more places and use it more.

More is better. Life is good. eBikes are good.

I've figured out photo.net, and it no longer troubles me. But a few things
remain broken, but they're not crucial to posting or viewing.

PRSO: Honfleur Harbor

2017-04-23 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Honfleur guards the left bank of the Seine as it flows into the English
Channel. It is smaller and more picturesque the Le Havre, on the right
bank, which was largely destroyed in World War II. Courbet, Boudin, and
Monet painted in Honfleur, forming the école de Honfleur, which contributed
to the appearance of the Impressionist movement

Re: PESO: For Ken Waller

2017-04-23 Thread Paul Stenquist
I've been using a finch mic that included thistle and other small seeds. I
previously had only finch feeders so only small birds could feed, although
woodpeckers showed up now and then. I now added a bigger feeder and filled it
with a wild bird mix that includes sunflower seeds, but my usual crowd of small
birds is still predominant. I expect others will arrive in time. It's been up
only three dsys. I added the suet cage with a block of duet that includes some
peanuts at the same time. The Titmouse went for that. The sparrows and
chickadees like it as well. I expect woodpeckers will turn up. They dominate
the suet feeders at the nature centers.
