Peregrine Falcons seem to like inner-city high-rise buildings, there was also a
pair nested on the
tallest tower in Brisbane for several years!

I know there are quite a few birdos on the list, so you might be interested in
this live video
feed.

A pair of Falcons have taken up residence on a high rise in Melbourne and have
just hatched out
three chicks. Fascinating stuff!

Re: enablement

Yes, i saw that shot in the PPG too... i guess i'll be shooting quite a
lot when i get it because it is a "new" lens but i'll decide nearer to
the trek whether i should take it or the 55-300. expecting to do some
birding on the trek so i suspect it'll be the 55-300.

thanks for your inputs, Igor.

Re: enablement

I've owned three of them, the biggest problem is they are getting old,
first sold with the SF series bodies, (1984ish), first "successful"
Pentax auto focus system.

There are a number of points of failure that become more likely as the
lens ages.   \

The problem is that the replacement parts are all from donor lenses
which have the same wear.

Don't get me wrong I love the lens, but of the three I own, one is in
pieces for parts to repair the second which is now jammed, which I
didn't try to get repaired because I was able to buy the third, for less
than the cost of the repair and shipping.

Re: enablement

2018-10-02 Thread Ken Waller
I've had the lens for over 29 years and it has never let me down. Probably
my most used lens or right up there.
I enjoy the relative small size and light weight. Biggest no like is the
external focusing which conflicts with the use of a polarizer, but that's
easily overcome by rotating the polarizer after focusing. Actually I counted
48 of the total 84 images were mine.

i've just got myself an F 70-210 f4-5.6, though it'd actually be two
weeks before i get my hands on it. the reviews of the lens on the PF
were pretty good and i was curious about the images taken with the
lens. so i went to PPG to have a look. most of the images for that lens
in PPG seems to have been taken by Ken Waller. indeed, the first 15
images or so were his. superb stuff. recognised a few other names from
the list too.

i am glad i bought this lens though it doesn't necessary follow that
the images i make will be half as good. i was planning to take the DA
55-300 on my trek in the himalayas next month but wondering if i should
take this lens instead (coupled with the sigma 17-50/2.8).

here is the PPG link for this lens if anyone else is interested:

However, I prefer my HD 55-300  (greater range & even better) so my poor

This image was used in one of the PDML books.

I was setting up on a different subject when I heard the prehistoric

fired off several shots and this was the best of the bunch. I really
like the equal spacing between the birds, the different wing positions

Re: enablement

2018-10-02 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Subash,

I also have that lens. I've purchased it some 15 years ago, while looking
for a better tele-zoom, to replace my Tamron 70-300, while still being on
a limited budget. I bought it from eBay for a bit higher than I should
have, but it was a moment when they seemed to have been disappearing.

It's a fine lens, and I've done a few good shots with it.
(As a matter of fact, I believe the "cover" shot on my photo website was
done with that lens: http://42graphy.org/ Heh! it shows up on PPG - from
that link that you've sent)
However, for some reason, I didn't fell in love with that lens, as much as
I liked 60-250/2.8, which I purchased several years later, when I had a
larger budget.

I still have that lens sitting on the shelf, but it's been ages since
I've used it.
Soon after purchasing that F 70-210, I bought the first version of
Tamron's super-zoom (18-250) (shortly as it came on the market around
2007) which I had used as a travel zoom for several years.
The rendering of F 70-210 was good, but the focal length was a bit short
for my needs on the tele side.
And that lens was not faster than the Tamron zoom. I think those were
the factors I haven't used F 70-210 as much.

Yet, I was reluctant to get rid of it.

I hope you will enjoy your new lens! Post back your results and
impressions, once you get to use that lens.

Igor

Re: PESO: BOO -- Not Safe for Ann or Jack or Acrophobes or Arachnophobes

2018-10-02 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I would disagree with Brian on the likability of the subject: I think it
is a quite-nice-looking monster.
It's a nice image. I would wish the eyes would be more in focus, - but I
suspect one would have to have stacking to have the eyes, the
"beard", and the legs, -- all in focus.

Last night I discovered a very large spider in the middle of our house on
the floor. Just the body size was probably exceeding the diameter of a
penny.

I caught it quickly. Because I was tired and sleepy, it was close to
midnight, and I had some things to be done before going to bed, I quickly
released that spider to the bushes outside. At a different time, I
would've done some photo sessions with it.

Cheers,

Igor

Re: PESO: An experiment

2018-10-02 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I am not a "purist", and occasionally like experimenting with and around
photos myself.
It is an interesting set of experimenting with the gracious bird
silhouette(s).

However, I am not sure it is working well with the multi-colored forest in
the background. The background is too busy to work. So, you have competing
a busy contrast of extraordinary colors and a simple dark-and-light
contrast of the bird and the rest. Those two seem to clash.
I actually think that the silhouette of Great Blue Heron
on various colors (green, purple, reddish peach, and probably even orange)
works much better.
As a matter of fact, - I think the 2x2 quadtych has some special appeal.
(My personal preference for colors would be green, red-peach, purple, and
either yellow or orange.)

I guess it has some obvious(?) "warholic" reference to it.

Just my 2 cents.

In any case, I enjoyed looking at and thinking about these experiments.

Igor

PS. The combination of the forest colors in your photo has reminded me of
my own "processed" shot from 11 years ago:

Right now, a couple of weeks after the Autumn Equinox, I can almost catch up
with Larry's view because of the shorter daylength up here. My advantage in
daylength grows towards Winter Solstice, but Earth's inclination brings the
most interesting parts further below the horizon too, so it gets less
interesting for both of us.
In summertime, Larry has all the advantages, both the better view of the galaxy
that comes with the season, and the darker skies that comes with the latitude.
