A*85mm/1.4 FOR SALE

2024-03-25 Thread Steve Cottrell
Hi Pentaxians

Well, waddya know, I’m selling my beloved A*85mm f/1.4. I said I never would,
but needs must and my boat refit demands funding. So, with a heavy heart, it
must go to a new home.

The lens was converted in the early 2000s to be able to fit on any other brand
of camera via a suitable adapter - read description and see photos on eBay page:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/235491553075

Apologies for not giving more notice of this sale but I have to get it listed
right away to qualify for 80% off seller fees (by midnight here).

If anyone on the list would like to buy, please email me off list and I’ll
remove it from eBay. Happy to ship to the USA and other places a possibility -
please enquire.

Hope all well and thanks for looking.

I’ve put together this *little* (ahem) film about the post-production process

Cotty's Channel

2024-01-02 Thread Steve Cottrell
Hello Pentaxians

Apologies if I mentioned this here on the list previously…I don’t think I have,
so in for a penny…

I’ve started a Youtube channel - Pentax content will be, ahem, very thin on the
ground - but not impossible as I still have some Pentax lenses that I use for
video occasionally, and I will feature them in an upcoming episode.

Anyway - new YouTube channel started yesterday. If you’re venturing into the
realms of video, this could be for you. A mixture of 'director's commentary'
versions of sailing features I've made with British sailor and broadcaster Tom
Cunliffe, and 'how-to' videos to improve your filmmaking skills. 5 new videos
dropped January 1st, and there is a short intro video.

New videos twice a month - have <>a look and if it's something you might be
interested in, by all means do subscribe.

Cheers,

Ios and Android devices using Google Maps are incapable of mimicking the
desktop interface, so no you can’t do that. The only option you have is to
select a route and amend it by clicking on the three little dots next to ‘your

allowing you to modify the route. It may take some time :-)

I was literally in awe.

Re: Lightroom requires a TB??

2023-07-19 Thread Steve Cottrell
Me too. In fact My son bought CS6 when he was a student - we went halves on it.
It can run on 2 separate computers, so happy days.

On a Mac it won’t run after OS 10.14 (Mojave) because 10.15 and onwards is
64bit. Mojave runs fine for me and even better - I finally got DaVinci Resolve
(video editing) running smooth on my 2012 MacBook Pro. That’s up to v18.5 but
after much research I found that 16.1 sits fine with my limited VRAM - 16.1.1
was a big upgrade requiring more VRAM and makes the playback stutter on my
system.

So I’m *finally* weaning off my old FCP7 !! Been using FCP since version 4 from
about 2006 or so. DaVinci Resolve is very similar to FCP7 (not FCPX which I
don’t like) and there is a free version and a paid version. For my needs the
free version works fine, but OI will happily pay if I need the extra features.
The paid version is about 300 USD and then all future upgrades are included. I
prefer this method of charging - one of the reasons I have avoided Adobe
Premiere….

Best

Re: Pentax MX Film Advance Lever

2023-07-03 Thread Steve Cottrell
Hi Colin - thanks for the offer but I beg to differ. The MX is unique. The dust
cap has two small holes for a removal tool (narrow circlip pliers will do) and
unscrews off the lever to reveal the screw beneath. And it is reverse-threaded
(don’t ask me how I know ;-)

Re: MX Mirror Foam Replacement

2023-06-26 Thread Steve Cottrell
Thanks Ralph,

The shutter times seem accurate, certainly at the slower speeds. The shutter
curtains appear to be playing ball! I have no way of checking the faster times
and it’s not worth sending it off for that to be done. The true test can be
with a roll of film.

This MX is my very first Pentax bought new in 1981 and only ever used by me.
Stopped using it regularly in 2003 so it has sat for 20 years in the warm and
dry on a shelf over my desk. I rattle off a few shutter firings every once in a
while, so I’ve no reason to think that it’s misbehaving. The mirror foam is
still there and performing its function. If iut hasn’t been fired in a while
the mirror sticks up on the first couple of shots, then it’s fine. I’m just
making sure it will last another 20 years - although my son knows that I want
to be buried with it, so he’ll have to give it back one day - although I’ll
never know!! :-0

I think the point of it, according to what I read, is that the useless toy is a
test-bed on which Ricoh will develop a film SLR.

It’s interesting to note that a lot of young people into photography are

Having to send this again as the previous attempt went over the 10Kb limit for
size. 10Kb?!??

Interesting. I guess it’s an aspect of different cultures’ perceptions.
Generally speaking I have no problems photographing in public. Mind you, I have
been doing it with big video cameras for over 30 years! I find that
photographing with a phone, nobody cares at all - so probably the best street
camera is in fact a phone!! I do like a small camera for street though, all set
up with a deep depth of field and pre-focussed ready to go so it just needs
lifting to the eye or even shooting from the hip.

Years ago, a pap told me that it was getting ever more difficult to photograph
celebs and royalty on holiday at the beaches of the rich and famous. They used
to keep their DSLRs and long lenses hidden under towels until the last second
to getb their sordid images. Security wisened up to this ploy and it became
‘difficult’… One bright spark had a change of plan - he would take a more
consumer -type camera with a fixed zoom lens with him, as well as his
girlfriend. They would make a holiday of it themselves, and on the beach he
would stand her between his camera and the subject, so it looked like he was
snapping her instead of the lazing entourage beyond!

If one really wanted to be incognito on the street, just wander about with an
Insta360 on a stick, recording video, and choose the still frames afterwards on
a rainy day. But where’s the skill in that??

Re: Pentax K3-iii Monochrome

2023-04-13 Thread Steve Cottrell
I’m in the process of selling my Olympus Pen F - I haven’t used it hardly at
all in quite a while, but that’s down to being busy in other areas like music,
boat-building, oh yeah and work! I still have my trusty little Fuji X20 which
incidentally I am going to build a custom power supply for as the stupidly tiny
NP-50 batteries are about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. Found a
power bank that measure the same width as the camera so will attach underneath
like an old motor drive.

When I use the X20, there are 2 custom settings on the main dial on top which I
have set to mono (C1) and colour (C2) with a few tweaks on the mono to boost
contrast. I’ve always said that I like to carry a camera with me that I have to
’think’ in black and white with. It works for me. A camera devoted to mono
would be right up my street, but with heavy expense elsewhere, ain’t no Leica
on my horizon right now!

Would I be interested in the Pentax? Possibly but I’m into a smaller form
factor. Really, the Pen F is the perfect size and I shouldn’t be selling it but
I want to fund an Irish bouzouki (like a mandolin with a long neck). I used the
Pen F in the same way as the Fuji, with mono output (large/fine jpegs), except
that being a mirrorless camera the viewfinder was then in monochrome - an
interesting aspect - thinking in mono and actually ’seeing’ in mono. Not sure
that it helps the cause or not.

I really like an optical viewfinder for mono, so in theory the Pentax wins on
that score. The Fuji X20 has an optical viewfinder. I suppose a Leica mono
would be pretty good really - a lottery win for me tho! When the dust settles
later this year I might pick up an X100 incarnation. I’ve always fancied one
:-) I don’t use zooms (for stills) so that would be quite good I think. And
when I did use the Pen F, my go-to lens was always the Voigtlander 15mm/4.5
(same angle of view as a 30mm on full-frame) so not far off the X100’s lens.

Hey ho, all the gear and no idea! ;-)

Hope everyone’s well

Cotty

Re: epson 2400

2023-03-13 Thread Steve Cottrell
One of the things that many people don’t realise is that whenever the print
heads go through a cleaning process, they do it by squirting ink through the
heads. The ink falls out of the bottom and into ‘wells’ usually packed with
foam. These wells become full over the years until ink literally spills out of
them and usually gets dragged around by the heads and you find streaks on the
paper and all sorts of mess.

To empty the wells is simple. You’ll need a plastic syringe. Depending on
printer model, I have found one of the best methods is to open the lid, switch
the printer on, and as it goes through it’s initial setup process at each
power-on event, the heads will move along the rail a short ways - it’s while
they are away from the ‘parked’ position that you have your finger on the power
switch at the wall - or have someone standing by ready - and just switch off at
the wall. This will depower the machine with the heads out of position. I have
done this on various printers over the years to no ill effect. After all, there
has to be circuitry inside that can cope with a natural power failure without
causing damage.

You then insert the end of your syringe into each well and suck up all that
horrible black mess and empty into a container of your choice. You’ll be amazed
at how much ink was sitting there lurking beneath your print heads! Give the
area a good mop up with paper towel.

To finish, simply power back on and the heads will go through the setup process
again and park where they normally do.

Some printers you can manually move the heads along the rail while the power is
off, but by no means all.

Hope this helps someone!

Dave - you need to RTFM to find out the flashing light combo and what it means
;-)

Go to Facebook, and click on ‘create account’ and once you reach the part where

Re: Pentax A 35-105mm F/3.5 Macro Zoom

2023-01-13 Thread Steve Cottrell
Thanks Bill

That’s interesting. I’m sure I had the Tokina 28-70 2.8/2.8 at some point in
the past, but memory starts to get hazy.

In the end I found a ‘spares or repair’ Nikkor AF-S 28-70/2.8 going cheap at a
very good used gear retailer in London called MPB.com - I’ve used them before
when buying high value broadcast equipment. The lens basically ‘wouldn’t focus
past the 2m mark’. These AF-S lenses suffer similar problems with AF motors
conking out, apparently. I’ve had my 17-35/2.8 apart in the past so ordered
this one for 135GBP.

I took it apart yesterday and sure enough, bingo. What happens is that the
inner workings of the lens (eg the solid surrounding polycarbonate holding the
lens groups in place) is surrounded by a hexagonal-shaped piece if thin
aluminium which sits in between it and the outer metal surrounding lens casing
that carries the zoom and focus rings. On both sides of the thin aluminium is
glued various printed circuitry all the way around - and there’s plenty of it.
Over time and handling, some of the glue starts to weaken and occasionally a
wayward edge of plastic film type circuitry comes away from the aluminium -
just enough to interfere with the spinning AF inner ring - actually it’s the
bit you can see through the little ‘window’ on the exterior of the lens,
displaying focal distances. This is similar on many lenses, including Pentax I
believe. Of course, the more the bit of circuitry becomes interference fit, the
more it interferes, until it basically gets caught and stops the AF motor being
able to push this inner ring around and achieving focus.

I’ve seen fixes on Youtube (search user ‘mikeno62’) where the glue on the weak
bit is replaced. In my case, I just ripped all the circuitry out and tossed it
in the bin!! I don’t need no stinking AF. Also de-clicked the aperture ring -
one of the main reasons I sought this lens and one like it - manual aperture
control. Plus the glass is uber sharp, great for HD video wide open.

Probably more than you were expecting here :-)

As you were

Re: Pentax A 35-105mm F/3.5 Macro Zoom

2023-01-10 Thread Steve Cottrell
Thanks Collin,

By chance I actually came across a ‘parts or spares and repair’ example of a
Nikkor AF-S 28-70/2.8 which, when I enquired, was told that it would not
autofocus (I only need manual focus and aperture). I know something of these
lenses as I have the 17-35/2.8 and have already had that apart to adapt it for
video use. So for 130GBP I have a lens that goes for betwen 3 tp 6 times that
depending on condition. It’s a stellar perfomer apparently which is what I need
for HD video.

Tweakers and drivers at the ready!

Cheers

Hi all

I’ve now found out that the front end of this lens rotates :-( Unfortunately
that’s a deal-breaker for me as I need a non-rotating lens. I attach a matte
box to an adapter that screws into the filter thread on the front of the lens
and clearly it woud rotate as well in use.

Shame as that range would be quite useful. I could opt for some of the other
mid-range zooms with an aperture ring, will have a think on it.
