Re: GESO - Metropolis

2022-08-28 Thread Toralf Lund

Thanks!

Maybe I could have left the images a bit darker in post processing. I
always find that kind of thing hard to judge. The film is supposed to
give a "desaturated look", or something of that nature.

The gallery thing I'm using wants to scale images to available size
(with borders) and doesn't offer an easy way to zoom in. The thumbnails
at the bottom were supposed to have more direct links to the original,
but sometimes add "frames", too. And maybe the files were also scaled a
bit on upload. Need to have a closer look at everything if I continue to
use this...

looks like the monument to the mand in the middle is eying the
scooter(?) left in font of him

:-)

That's one of those "electric scooters" that seem to be everywhere these
days. They annoy a lot of people, but I think they make nice subjects
sometimes.

;-)

On a serious note, speaking of that "reply"-button problem, - have you
(and everybody else on the list who suffers from it) submitted a bug
report on it?

If not, - you should.
As I sort of said elsewhere, I did. Unfortunately, the report got marked
as a duplicate of another issue (which I didn't notice when searching),
and that issue is marked as WONTFIX. But I'm still shouting.

1. They might not be aware of it.
2. They might not think that change was a problem...
Part of the issue seems to be that one of the developers behind the
change has decided that it's not a problem, no matter how many people
say that it is in fact a problem.

3. The priority of the problem fixing is decided by the overall
loudness (hence the number) of complaints.

... but even some loudness might still help, perhaps...

Meanwhile, I found that the situation gets a little better if you

1. Right-click on the header in the message view and select "Customise..."
2. Drag the button marked "Reply" from the main window to the
"Customise Toolbar" window (so as to remove it from the view.)
3. Press Done in the window I just mentioned.

The message view will then only have a "Smart reply" button which
alternates between "Reply", "Reply All" and "Reply List" depending on
the context. (Note that the behaviour changes compared to when you also
have the "normal" "Reply" button, because then the "Smart Reply" then
hides itself in some cases.)

Actually, the situation might be acceptable if you could also add "Smart
reply" to the main tool-bar and have a keyboard short-cut for it. There
are bug reports related to this, too, but they're not exactly new, so
there is a question of whether the issues will ever be addressed.

I still think the "Reply" implementation is wrong in principle, though...

Yes. I learned something new, too.

As far as I know, we have two different species of newts here, and they
are both considered as endangered. It hadn't occurred to me that you
might come across them at this particular location, although it has a
couple of ponds which I think are artificial. On the other hand, I'd
heard that they can be found in a certain area a couple of kilometres
away...

Yeah, maybe that's the surprising bit. Apparently, you can find them in

by hibernating. Even here, where it doesn't get very cold, the lizards &

Quite. I few years ago I actually came across a slow-worm on the

morning, and the English name of the creature seemed quite appropriate,
if you know what I mean.

I would say those are

Anyhow, I actually asked the natural history museum, and according to
them, this is in fact not a lizard after all, but rather a newt in its
"terrestrial phase", also known as an "eft". I thought these would have
flatter and thicker tails, but I guess that's something that they
develop later... Apparently, they will wander from their place of
hibernation to dams around this time, and run a great risk of drying out
if it's too sunny. There is also a change that they have been forced out
into the sun because their place has been disturbed.

Octopus is quite good, when done right. My first experience with it
was a smoked tentacle I purchased in a park in Japan about 50 years

Octopus is a local specialty in Mykonos, and they know how to do it
well. The traditional way of tenderizing it is to slam it against a
rock 100 times, but I suspect they have easier methods today. In any
event, this dish was quite tasty, as were the caramelized onions
served with it. A glass of Ouzo completes the experience.

A glass of Ouzo tends to help, doesn't it?

I think there are several reasons for the fall off in postings. The
web-based DP Review Pentax Forums are easy to find for people
looking for info on their new cameras and for help with problems.
Also PDML has morphed into (mainly) a photo sharing list - nothing
wrong with that but there seems to be few gear-related postings except
when a new model is rumoured or released. Perhaps we're all so
familiar with our cameras that we don't need any assistance.

I'm not sure how to increase participation. I tried a number of

the
sensor's pixels/mm number is larger than lines/mm number for the lens.

(The

factor of 1.28 in principle can produce some significant effect for some
lenses if you are going from 6 MP to 7.7 MP.

In this case, the same argument may apply for the sharpest lenses.

Nyquist rate times the bayer pattern.

Double should be good enough to get unaliased luminance data, but you
need to look at the sample rate for each color. What you are really
asking for is that each color be sampled at over the nyquist rate.

Exactly.

I'm also wondering if the extra green of the bayer pattern is rather
pointless at such a resolution, but I haven't really thought about it a
lot...

I wonder if there are pathological cases where the repeating pattern
is at 45 degrees and you need another 1.4 times the resolution to
avoid aliasing.

Hmmm... Also something to consider, I suppose.

I think that a lot of what he is going through is what Pentaxians
would/will be going through if/when Pentax ever offers a full frame
camera. You don't really realize how much you are taking advantage of
(relying on) the 1.5x focal length factor (actually equiv. FOV) of the
APS-C until you try to replicate your lenses on a full frame system.
To try to find lenses that still give you that focal length and
maximum aperture becomes an expensive proposition, when it is possible
at all.

Extreme example: DA* 200mm f2.8 can be bought for under $1K. (More
like $700, used) 300mm equiv. FOV on APS-C
Move to a full frame, now you need a 300mm f2.8 to replicate that FOV.

Not really, if the full-frame camera gets an equivalent pixel density to the
APS-C one(s). You might then use the 200mm as before, and crop by 1.5x in post
processing, and get exactly the same result...

- T

Price one of those lately? A Sigma is $3400. A more reasonable choice
would be a 300mm f4. You've replicated the FOV, but lost a full stop
of light.

Thoughts? Preferences?
I didn't really take much notice of the man when I looked at the BW

Anyway, like many others, I think I prefer the Kolor version :-)

And a rather nice shot it is, in any case.

Hi,

Didn't notice your questions until now...

I have to admit I'm not 100% sure what these are. I believe lythrum
salicaria is what's called kattehale (meaning cat's tail) in
Norwegian, and they certainly grow wild in the general area. I think
they are native (as opposed to having spread from gardens or whatever.)

I do think I see some light fall-off on some images this time, but I'd
still say this is a quite usable lens on the larger format.

Very nice! I shot a lot of Superia 100 back then.

Thank you.

This is the 200 variant, though - which seemed to replace the 100 as the
standard film around here, several years before people started
shooting digital.

I like

the most, good perspective and the couples sitting on the pier add a
lot to the photo.

Thanks again. I was quite pleased with that one, too. It's from a new
development in Oslo, or a new extension of a slightly older one, if you
like. It's a rather nice place to hang out on a sunny summer day, which
we had a lot of this year, so I've been there quite a few times, like
many other people. It's also easily the area in the city, if not the
entire country, with the highest prices, so if you feel like drinking
beer, you may consider going elsewhere. Not to mention if you're going
to buy a flat :-)

Yes, it may be a matter of taste, or monitor adjustment, or both. I must
admit, though, that I find it hard to judge how much tonal adjustment
exactly ought to be applied. Some of it is always needed, as raw bw
film scans definitely look flat, at least with my scanner.

Quite. Like I said earlier, it sort of brings cheap plastic feel to a
whole new level, but I can live with that as long as the lens works
optically. And this also means it's really light, which can be very
convenient.

Funny that some folks have been complaining there's no reasonably fast
normal lens in the Pentax lineup.

Now, there's another interesting little project... You might take more
or less the same shots with this lens on a film and digital, or
alternatively use a 24 mm (which I have) on digital, to get more or less
the same field of view. I'm not sure I could get exactly the same
perspective from two shots in a row, though. Perhaps if using a tripod,
but I'd probably manage to change the setup slightly even then :-/

There's a lot to like here. Interesting geometry, the person sitting
on the edge of the wharf, the two symmetrical buildings in the
distance. Good tone to the image as well.
Thanks! This was in a way taken as a picture of the person sitting

closer one. And nicer in a sense - this is just someone I happened to
