Veso: T-bone and the Kalispell Fair - 1988

2024-04-26 Thread ann sanfedele
All the photos were taken with my trusty Pentax LX - Kodachrome's
scanned on Epson flatbed v500
I made the vid in Windows Movie maker .. dropped in the music from an
MP3 . Original guitar music
by my friend Bob Zaidman  - music recorded  on tape back in the 70's -
in a studio setting.   Long story -
I'll skip  but it ws an impromtu performance by Bob on guitar and Dom
Duval (sr.)  on bass .  Duval Sr. died in 2016.
He had gone from the blues stuff to free style jazz and there are a lot
of recordings around of him playing jazz.

Bob had been sending me MP3's  since we have been back in touch.. i
really liked this piece they called "What you will"
and thought the shots I took back in 1988 and the music paired nicely.
The calf really was named "T-bone"

Between FB and INSTAGRAM and PDML FB and using messenger online
occasionally where I see most of you, I've been mostly lurking here.
confessing that any
discussion of new tech of any photo related stuff is of little interest
I hardly ever post here these days.  since I can see your photos (which
does interest me) elsewhere.
I'm not doing much new stuff except editing archives and listing stuff
I'm selling on ebay or on the create photo calendars site)

So for the few who haven't seen me for a while and only look/lurk here
- this is a new one  taken a couple of days before my 87th birthday in
Dec.  a few blocks from
my apt.  The thing that looks like a photo equip bag is an insulated
lunch bag for shopping .  I don't do any photo walks - just slip the
tiniest camera I have into my pocket
when I go out and don't anticipate carrying too much other stuff on my
way home.  anyway, I kinda like this one.

Re: Elliott Erwitt

2023-11-30 Thread ann sanfedele

Damn! ..
I never met him in person but he wrote a blurb for my book Sign Language
in 1992 .. that never got used because he was out of the country when he
got the
photos .. he sent the quote in to my editor (one of his, of course)
saying  "if it's not too late, here's a quote for you"  I scanned the
postcard and used it on the back of the
"sequel"  to Sign Language "Signs Gone By" that I self published a
couple of years ago.  But there were other connections too,and another
missed op to meet him in person at the Leica gallery here.  Had
connections to him through other friends of mine.. one a cinematographer
he worked with whose wife was a close friend of mine
and Erwitt gave them a very large print of his wife and baby that is in
the Family of Man... Another friend's son accepted Erwitt's photos for
dental work and  a little place called Reubens that sold empanadas near
where I worked in Soho back in the 90's was lined with his photos -
Owner was a friend of EE.

Oddly, the day he died (yesterday)  I had just commented on instagram on
a street photographer's photo of a man holding his dog and they looked
like each other .. the street photographer was someone I met recently
who by coincidence had just been look at my book in a little park in
Brooklyn and had told Fernando a photo of his reminded me of one of
Erwitt's.

I guess his getting to 95 makes it less sad..    I just now saw the
Times obit.. published on-line 3 hours ago.

His photos have always been an inspiration. Today I happened to be at the Leica

noticed someone else, who had been drooling at Leicas, leave then immediately
come back in. As far as I could tell he’d caught sight of something he couldn’t

head of a bulldog, and he left again with his shoulders heaving with laughter.

Interestingly (or not) the English Language expression "passing ships in

sounds like it originated with that definition of yours.

Pau, thanks so much!  Glad you like the photo of my friend Annie.  It
was taken in 1997 in Rhode Island where she had a summer cottage.  shot
with color negative film , not chrome. Can't  remember  whether Fuji or
Kodacolor.. no idea where the negs are.. scanned from 4 x 6 print.  Had
a better one but Annie has that print.. We have been friends since
1973.. I"m not the only photographer who photographed her walking away
from them on a beach in Rhode Island (or maybe Connecticut - anyway and
east coast beach)  The other was (drum roll) Margaret Bourke-White -
many many years earlier. Annie used to read
to Bourke-White when she was losing her eyesight late in life. I can say
I had my hands on that print about 20 years ago. In that photo Annie was in
a bathing suit and walking  with her young niece.  a much tighter shot.
Don't know if that photo was ever published or just given to Annie.

A recent outing was to 30th St. Station, Philadelphia’s still-busy train

In the first pic, the glass-roofed bridge-like structure serves the commuter

tracks for the Amtrak trains are below its floor.

Commentary and criticism both welcome!

Right, not found in Western Hemisphere - I researched.  But feel I need
to tell you that I especially liked that  shot because of the overall
composition of the
photo...not a particular  love of that specific blossom. Not  that the
bloom isn't pretty _ but I just thought that photo was outstanding and a
more interesting one than that of the isolated bloom .  It was
particularly painterly.  super photo.

Re: RIP Dan Matyola

2023-05-11 Thread ann sanfedele
This is hard to write...  I knew a bit more about how serious his
illness was and the nature of it before he mentioned on the list that he
was going to have surgery.
We had been sharing our WORDLE answers in emails and in early March he
wrote that he ws going in for surgery and why - he asked me not to share
that information...
(and I won't now either)  but it was serious stuff .  He was staying
optimistic about recovery .. heard from him while he was in hospital..
keeping to light exchanges.
Then about 10 days passed without and email but I spotted a "like" from
him on one of my photos on Fb so wrote and asked if he were out of
hospital... He replied

"Just returned home 45 mins ago.  Sore all over, but otherwise OK. I
will check in when I can."

I replied there was no need for him to report just to take care of
himself..  and I saw he was making posts to the list..

On 4/27 he wrote:
"How are you doing doing? I am ever impressed at how you manage
to get along so well in that walk-up apartment.  Take care of yourself."

He's asking ME how I am..  !  (Dan was one of a number PDML'rs who have
climbed 3 flights of stairs to visit me - He was last here in 2019 when
Jan Van Wyk
came to NY and we had a mini PDML
visit and lunch.. )

"While I don't have much pain, I am constantly stiff and sore... "
Right now, I am trying to get by one day at a time. Things will
improve, but very slowly.  I need patience and faith."

I was surprised to see Bruce's post.. thought sure he would be back on
his feet and walking Blizzard before too long..  so sad.

Re: Slide scanners

2023-05-01 Thread ann sanfedele
Rick - I have and Epson V500 that can only scan 4 slides at once and
scan at 4800 like Paul.. However, what I did for organization's sake
is projected the photos in my carousels (which had already been pruned
to some extent) put my camera on a tri pod and photographed the
projected images.. putting them in folders on my computer naming the
number of the Carousel and basic subject.. the quality is good enough to
remind me what I shot ... not good enough to use  - rather like a
scribbled note pad if you were writing the great american novel :-)

But good enough to glimpse on the monitor to pull out the best ones to
make good files from... and works as an index .. you don't really want
to dump your original Chromes, right?  if that is what you are thinking,
think again.  those carefully stored chromes will last a really   long time
if they are images you consider worth saving - and someone else might
appreciate them not being destroyed.

File cabinets and original chromes , like letters on paper and real
books don't  disappear if your hardrive crashes... or the technology
becomes

obsolete in 5 minutes.

Yes and no.  I'm remembering an older shot I think, without the people

I looked up ON1 and it doesn't matter what the cost is because I have

The trouble with the shot of the Bruges is that it can only be taken

for that. And with the mess at Dover which is getting worse by the day I
don't see us doing that any time soon.

stunning  though..

I have sooo many slides..  LIke this shot of the Pride of Bruges .. more

certainly save a noisy shot.

All major image processing software appears to have some AI based
denoising function nowadays.

As some of you might know, I've ditched Adobe's ransomware in favour of
ON1 Photo RAW and its denoising never ceases to amaze me. Best of all,
it doesn't only work on RAW files from digital cameras but also on TIFF
files with analog film data and the results with scans of 25 year old
400 ISO stock are incredible.

Whatever I throw at it, noisy stuff from my *istDS or grainy colour
film, I've got a bunch of shots that I'd never have published otherwise.

The same goes for DxO Photolab 6 but sadly it only works with RAW files,
not scans.

Here's an example from ON1. ISO 400 colour negative made even worse by
having it processed in a 1-hour-minilab, scanned after 25 years.

You say “not the same thing…”. Why not? Just for discussion…

I sat through an on-line workshop yesterday afternoon, Tim Grey on How to Plan
for a Trip. His base example was Rome, whether talking about useful weather
apps or packing tips or day-by-day route planning. But where/what to
photograph? One approach he suggested was to start with google images. He found
about 1.5 million images (Google or Twitter, I lost track) which pretty well
summed up places and viewpoints in that city.

I was reminded of a few years ago, in Venice, with Gianfranco. He chided me for
the photo I was setting up for, an evening shot of the Grand Canal, gondolas in
the foreground, the bends in the canal, Sun on the buildings in the distance.
Too cliche, too much like a postcard? Yes, he had a point. But. No one else had
ever seen that scene nor would anyone ever seen that scene again. Similar,
sure. But my image was uniquely what I was seeing at that point in time. And if
others had had a similar experience, good on them. But I was pleased to see
what I saw and to be able to capture it.
Yes, we explored and found different viewpoints and different scenes, but their
uniqueness didn’t make them better or worse. One fun experience: Meg was
starting to take a photo of a women on a third floor balcony, hanging her
laundry. The lady objected. We backed off, didn’t point cameras at her. But we
did start taking pictures of her reflection in a nearby puddle! Once we started
away, it was fun to see how many people stopped to look into that puddle,
trying to see why we had been so intently studying it.

In short, unless you are shooting for stock photos and don’t want to have your
images lost in the crowd, just shoot what pleases you. And then step aside
because 27 others want to capture that same view, and that’s ok.

At least with digital I don’t have to worry about running out of film. (Just
battery life.) Except for the 6x7. At 10 shots per roll one must be judicious.

So the question is: What should I shoot? Not just the same things that a
million other tourists have shot, that’s for certain.

Not only on Easter but also some time in autumn and over Xmas and the
New Year.

It has become a tradition and a kind of second home. We love the area
because it has a number of advantages. It's on the sea, we can be on the
Belgian coast in 30 minutes and in England in a little over 2 hours. We
can spend a day shopping and sightseeing in Kent and be back 'home' in
France in the late evening. We love the North Sea, especially when it's
rough and stormy. Did I mention the enormous steel mill and the sea port
full of great things to photograph?

If I could create the ideal place for me it would be just like that. We
might even have moved there, years ago, but with two elderly mothers,
things weren't as easy and now we're ourselves a little old for that.

In the meantime, things have changed. Our friend who used to take care
of our cats while we were gone hasn't survived her heart surgery, our
landlord in Dunkirk has fallen from the roof and most of all there are
the migrants, or rather the French police who think two guys in a car
with German numberplates hanging around at the beach or in the harbour
have got to be people smugglers.

I'm in NY for a short visit to deal with some family business and see a couple
of friends ... And of course I visited Ann while I was here. :)

PDML Gothic - Manhattan, New York City 2023 :: https://flic.kr/p/2osw7km

The art of the selfie ... gads, it's harder than I think every time I try to
make one. I made two with my iPhone that I deleted immediately, Ann made one
with her CoolPix where she had a nice smile and I looked like I'd been smokin'
dope for a day. This one I made with the Light L16 camera on self timer, camera
set to about 75mm focal length: I cut my head off partially, but Ann has a
mischievous look on her face that I like and at least the photo is reasonably
sharp. The picture of the girl on the wall is one of Ann's paintings, based on
a photo taken of her by her mom when she was a young girl.

It was a lovely hour! Ann, you're looking great! It was great to see you and
spend some time together once again! :D

I'm off for another day and a half in Connecticut and then back home...
