Re: Anybody home?

2022-06-26 Thread Stan Halpin
My lay-persons advice is to ignore the test results at this stage. Unnecessary
anxiety without any valid purpose. Per CDC, you may well be Positive for 90
days after onset. Give your attention to your temperature etc. Treat the
symptoms!
Meg had a horrible cough for several days, I had minor cough, one day of sore
throat and moderately high temp. So a week later she was Negative, 4 weeks
later I was marginally Positive still, Negative at the 6 week mark. But all of
that is not diagnostic of anything, only an indicator that yes I had been
exposed.
I did do occasional tests, contrary to my advice above, but only because I
needed documentation and clearances for travel.

Take care guys. This "thing" is still with us. The restrictions have
also been totally removed is SA as from yesterday. Even although we are
up to date with our vaccinations, we choose to continue wearing our
masks which gives protection against other airborne bugs too. It will be
interesting to see what the colder weather in SA brings. The authorities
say that in spite of a low overall vaccination rate, the population has
developed high natural immunity. We shall see!

Much the same here. I got my camera out last weekend hoping that the SOFIA
plane would come past, but the wind was blowing from the south so they didn't
need to circle over the city. Sadly they didn't do a loop over the city anyway
as the US Antarctic Program often do with a C17 when they arrive for summer.

We could definitely use some of the hotter weather that the US and Europe have
had lately. We've had a few frosty mornings lately and are barely scraping into
double-digits C.

Today is the first time Matariki (Maori new year) is being celebrated as a
public holiday. It's quite a big thing for our country.

Re: Anybody home?

2022-06-23 Thread John Sessoms
I hope you get to feeling MUCH BETTER REAL SOON. So far I've been lucky,
but I have been careful too. I'm still practicing extreme social
distancing & when I've had to go out I've worn a good mask 99% of the time.

I don't wear a mask when I'm walking the dog down to the park and back
for his daily "constitutional", but any time I expect to encounter
people, especially in an enclosed space ...

That said, I did have a bit of a health scare this week.

Monday was the first day in a long time I've been out to photograph
anything and I'm woefully out of shape from sitting around doing nothing
because of the long term quarantine & lock-down.

I chose a spot on Google Maps that looked interesting and was within a
half-hour of my house and went down to photograph an old bridge.

Turns out my organizational skills have atrophied along with my body
from the long period of not using either one. When I got down there I
found I had to scramble up and down a hill several times to get to my
tripod & camera set up in the place where I wanted it.

Sometime on the third or fourth trip back down I noticed I'd picked up a
tick. Don't think it could have been there more than a minute or so
before I noticed it and pulled it off ... and I was wearing mosquito &
tick repellent.

I *HATE* ticks. I had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever once and it's the
sickest I have ever been in my life - high fever, blinding headache and
SEVERE PAIN all over my body.

Tuesday night (Wednesday morning) I woke up about 3:00am feeling
feverish & with a lot of pain. Couldn't find a thermometer. I know I had
one, but all I found was the plastic tube it's supposed to be in.

I took some pain medication I keep hoarded for dire emergencies & broke
out my heating pad. Wednesday I went to the drugstore and bought FOUR
thermometers (Bedroom, Bath, file cabinet next to my desk where I keep
the blood pressure & blood sugar testers and one for the Kitchen
drawer). Next time I need one, I'll damn sure be able to find one.

Anyway, when I did wake up on Wednesday, the pain was eased & I no
longer felt feverish. When I got back from the store, my temperature was
"normal" ... but I'm going to have to do a good bit of work getting
ready for the NEXT time I go on photo safari.

one. Actually I may not survive yet, having passed it on to Cath, who is
presently undergoing the full experience and cursing me by the hour.

Joking (I hope) aside, don't let anyone tell you that this is just like flu or
even a cold. It's far, far worse and there is no predictability as to how bad
it will be for individuals. Even now, more than a week after first symptoms,
my lungs are barely functional. I don't need a pause coming _down_ the stairs
any more but that is little comfort. Cath seems to be suffering more with
joint issues, although her coughing has increased a lot over the last day or
so. I don't know if that is a function of different body reactions to the
virus or if there is viral mutation involved. It speaks volumes to me that
there can be two such differing reactions, though.

So don't let your guard down. It _won't_ be alright to be unmasked "just this
once" or to go into a crowd of unmasked people. Sanitise _every_ time. I managed
to avoid it until now and I won't be in a hurry to go through it again. Good luck.
