Cool bike - I pulled out of my driveway and got behind a guy on

you just let the motor do its thing. He was tooling along at 25 mph,
which is the speed limit, so he kpt me legal for a block or two.

Fun shot, and good use of the color.

Interestingly, the ad that accompanied it was for the Sekonic histogram
challenge:

http://www.sekonic.com/classroom/histogram.asp#Contest?utm_source=photo.netutm_medium=bannerutm_campaign=histogram-contest

As they try to convince people that a hand held meter works better than
the histogram.

What I'd find interesting would be a display that took brightness levels
and converted them to false color. I.e. so that clipped black mapped as
red and clipped white mapped as blue, so you could glance at your
display and see the metering for the full frame.

2004-11-11 Thread Rob Studdert
On 11 Nov 2004 at 13:40, Anthony Farr wrote:

I'll make a big guess that Rob took the shot at Sculpture By The Sea at
Bondi Beach. If that's the case, the seaside light (with lots of
backscatter from the sand and surf) could give this lighting quality which
looks a little like fill flash. Looking at the sky it's a patchy
near-overcast that can also give an effect like open cloudy day shadows but
 with
sunny highlights. We often see this in Sydney. Or Rob might have savagely
 bent
the curves to lighten up the shadows.

Well spotted, it wasn't however on the sand it was just below the park where
many of the larger sculptures reside. No flash was used but the sky was bright
overcast and the sun was in front of the subject so I had to screw about to get
any detail in the shadow areas. The grass around them was pretty trampled so I
elected to de-saturate to reduce it's impact. The problem was that I had to
pick a strange colour balance to differentiate the b/g from the subject.

But I do agree that it looks almost unnatural, a little like an Ilford XP2
shot in its tonality though I'm sure Rob would have used his *istD The
sharpness isn't up to his usual high standard.

Ah well, we can't all be perfect all the time, LOL.

Following are details of the exhibition:

Gotta think about this one, Rob. Very interesting shot but there's
something about the tonality that just doesn't seem right.

Interesting shot. What is it, some sort of sculpture? It doesn't
look like actual people riding actual bikes, but I could be wrong.

Yep, gotta agree there, I certainly didn't post it as a masterpiece, more for a
laugh :-)

I've posted an unsaturated 16bit TIFF of the same image if you'd like to have a
play with it, not the best condition light and surroundings wise I'm afraid.

I'll make a big guess that Rob took the shot at Sculpture By The Sea at
Bondi Beach. If that's the case, the seaside light (with lots of
backscatter from the sand and surf) could give this lighting quality which
looks a little like fill flash. Looking at the sky it's a patchy
near-overcast that can also give an effect like open cloudy day shadows but
with sunny highlights. We often see this in Sydney. Or Rob might have
savagely bent the curves to lighten up the shadows.

But I do agree that it looks almost unnatural, a little like an Ilford XP2
shot in its tonality though I'm sure Rob would have used his *istD The
sharpness isn't up to his usual high standard.

regards,
Anthony Farr

A different sensibility wrt lighting and exposure is appropriate with BW.
That's one of the reasons desaturating and manipulating color isn't always
successful, and even less so and less frequently for those who have not
shot and worked with BW.

Hi Rob,

Before fiddling with it, just tell me if the sculpture is on green grass or
otherwise. Thanks! BTW, is the chair and the fellow standing by it, at the
top of the photo, part of the artwork? Can't tell if it's a real gut or
some other type of guy
