There has been talk of adding the ability for SC to identify and
resample tracks that have a higher sample rate than the device is
capable of playing.
I did have a quick look but couldn't see an enhancement request files
in Bugzilla.

There are very good reasons for sending the lossless compressed audio to
the player. Firstly you increase your buffer by 40-60%, secondly at the
same time you are decreasing your bandwidth requirments by 40-60%.
Making it far less likely you will run into buffer problems compaired
to pure PCM,
I keep reading the squeezebox can't resample 96khz content... throwing
away data is unacceptable.
Why not resample on the server end to 48khz before going to the
squeezebox?
Is there such a plugin?
