I just realized you said February -- your loop route on 243 could
include temperatures in the 20's, and if the wet weather keeps up, you
could also get snow. You may want to plan on sticking to desert rides.
Though with this wet winter, you could also get snow in Joshua Tree,
which is high desert.
I believed you, but thanks for that amazing pic anyway! B-)

Hi Ken,
Check if this route from Banning to PS suits you:

Basically, it's frontage road (Johnson, Main, Railroad) out to the
last on/offramp (Verbenia) before entering the desert. At Verbenia,
you'd need to get onto I-10 for about 1000' as you get on Hwy 111.
That Joshua Tree route is very nice, though it can also get very
windy. I'd go to that ride if I was still in So Cal. Hwy 62 is not
much fun. Cars go fast and mostly not much of a shoulder. You are also
occasionally treated to very low flying Marine Corps jets from the air
base in 29 Palms. And by
Yeah, 62 wouldn't be a real fun way to end it... maybe do that first and get
it out of the way???

Looking like if you park at the east entrance, rode 62 to west entrance,
then did the loop, it would be ~40 miles of climbing 3000 ft, then
descending that back down in ~10 miles. That's a good day of riding!

The Tour De Palm Springs will be going on Feb 12-13th. Weather is
usually brisk in the morning and warm in the day 60+ degrees or so.
I've done this one a bunch. You may be able to download a course route
online. Real fun ride if you decide to participate. If not, there are
tons of interesting
Gotta say, the best riding around Palm Springs requires fat tires and
(hopefully) front suspension (at least):

You could try it on a Bombadil, but I don't think you'd try it again on a
Bombadil.

Thanks Gary for the info on the Tour Dee Palm Springs. I will be in
town the night of the 18th and leaving on the 20th.
Dustin, the Palm Canyon Epic looks fantastic, but I don't think I
would try that solo in unfamiliar territory and my Atlantis has
couplers so I can travel with it, my
Ken,
If you have time to get over to Joshua tree National Park, it is
phenomenally beautiful place to ride. You can do an out and back from
either entrance or ride end to end if you have a ride to pick you up, gate
to gate is about 35 or 40 miles if my memory serves. A longer loop is
possible
The J-Tree loop is on my list of things to do. Perfect time of year for
it! A bit of climbing (I mapped it, but haven't actually, you know, rode
it)

Some conversation has been kicking around re. a desert ride for the SoCal
I mapped it from my place and it would take about 3 hours to get
there. Has anybody riden this loop? how long if you stop to smell
the roses? I might be in if it could be a day trip. If the rain stops
by then is could be perfect.
Ken- how late are you leaving on the 20th? could we make a
