patches on Day 2, does a backup on Day 3, and on Day 4 tries to restore
from Day 1. Maybe rdiff-backup will complain if, for example, it tries
to set a creation date but cannot find one in the Day 1 backup?

folders. This patch has been committed to CVS and will appear in 1.1.8.

You're missing the -r now part. :-)

on a file before doing so, whereas rdiff-backup always calls it while
setting attributes. That could be why rsync avoids hitting this issue.

When you do the restore using rdiff-backup, it will recover the symlink
from its internal metadata (that's what the 'SpecialFileError' signifies).

is due to an accented character not being escaped properly. I
believe I fixed it in CVS a few days ago.

it will look for, and use, the directory target/rdiff-backup-data
So yes, you can backup a directory that in turn contains another
rdiff-backup repository without any problems. (I do so regularly.)
