George,
Are all the failures on the same winch?

The failures were on 2 different winches. All winches are Tim McCann
winches, all have Cole Hersee solenoids. The only difference is one winch
has a Ford 6V motor, the other has an Injoy 6V motor (not the new ones). We
run with 12v batteries. We have replaced the solenoids with the same

George, when installing the solenoids you must use 2 wrenches. One to
keep the lugs from turning (it has a nut on the lug), the other to
tighten the nut.
Do you know if that was done?

No but in the future I'll be sure it's done.

I have maintained the Eastern Soaring League winches for several years. The
one thing I've never had to replace an any of the four winches are the
solenoids. There was one time when it appeared that there was a solonoid
failure. Upon closer examination, it was just a loose connection that had
Since the subject came up, Cole Hersee has a solenoid that is electronic (i.e.
no moving parts like your typical solenoid / relay). The part number is 48785
and it is rated at 1 million switching cycles, but you get to pay for those
cycles with a cool 140 bucks. I looked at the spec sheet on

I have built several McCann winches for our club and myself. I always use heavy duty continuous solenoids. Both the Prestolite #15-133 or the Cole Hesee #24037 at about $25 each, have proven very reliable.
Considering the price of what's being towed up the line, spending an extra $20 or so
Has anybody used a continous duty solenoid for a winch rather than the standard
ford style solenoids we have been using for many years?
I am refitting two BS F3B winches with dual solenoids and am considering a pair
of Pollack continous duty solenoids, p/n 11-2570, with the dual LED warning

Any comments, thoughts or ideas ?

I have already copied your buzzer article. It looks very interesting and I will
probably incorporate the system.
Thanks Miamimike.
I have another inquiry. What is a good scanner to use for our RC freqencies?

I like the Icom IC-R2. It will let you setup any of the RC freqs (27,
50, 72MHz) and much more. I also like to listen to full scale comms on
it as well.
Happy flying,

I use Stancor 586-902 586 series DC power contactors. Rated at 200A
continuous and 600A inrush. Silver contacts. Newark part number is
44F3645, $43 each. Many years of reliable service on 6 F3b winches.
