I am using some custom written shaders. These deals with image based
lightings. Simple parameters with a skybox for reflections. In fact, I have
one uber-shader that I tweaked to make most of the surfaces. I did the same
renders with Soft and the render times were much the same.

Alok, looking really good.
You rendered with native cycles or are you using a render engine. I' d
suggest looking at blender wikia on cycles so you can realize some of the
parameters and structure of cycles to take the most advantage to translate
those concepts back to unity.

I have never used the CDH, but depending on what you want to do you might
want to take a look at Fabric Engine.
I believe it (v.1.53, not sure about just-released 2.0) does support
Softimage/Linux and allows for the display of arbitrary data and
interaction in the Softimage
If my memory serves me correctly, CDH is a Windows only feature.
